About
Gordon River Cruises is an award winning wilderness experience in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Departing from Strahan on Tasmania's west coast, Gordon River Cruises offers half day cruises on the Gordon River aboard its sleek, purpose built tour vessel, Spirit of the Wild. Spirit of the Wild was purpose-built in Hobart, especially for the Gordon River. She is an impressive 33m catamaran, fitted with a unique hybrid propulsion system that allows you to cruise the wilds of the Gordon River under electric motors that push Spirit of the Wild along very, very quietly. There is no better way to appreciate the remarkable tranquility of this UNESCO World Heritage-listed place than aboard Spirit of the Wild. Our dedicated on guides take you through western Tasmania's rugged natural and human history, while new character-based interpretation videos take you back in time to hear tales of hardship and heroics. A beautiful lunch is included in your Gordon River Cruise.

The very modern boat roars out to Hell’s Mouth at 25 knots and ambles up the stunning Gordon River using its ultra-quiet electric engine. Frankly, unless the boat is very full, I’d take a cheaper main deck ticket, although the upstairs lounge is clearly luxurious. We had an excellent guide and a really enjoyable experience even in pretty poor weather - but with 3 metres of rain each year the chances are you will have less than perfect conditions too. Don’t miss a fascinating trip - it was a memorable six hours including the two stops in the rain forest and at Sarah Island.

Six hour cruise across Australia's second largest harbour and up the Gordon River in to the World Heritage site, a land that goes back largely untouched for thousand of years- superb.

We had a visit to penal colony Sarah Island where David a guide/actor gave a fantastic and entertaining introduction to the history of the site. The trip ended with a glorious sunset at Hell's Gates. Facilities on board were top notch and we were lucky as there were only 30-40 passengers.

Only caveats-
1) food on cold buffet was a bit unexciting and stodgy esp given the price paid. My wife had hot veggie curry which she really liked. A hot dish would have been welcome addition for non veggies.

2) too much video/audio talk and some of it sounded like it was being read straight off the prompt sheet in a rather pitchless delivery so became a bit of an irritant.

If crew learned the material so they could extemporise with a bit more enthusiasm like the actor David did this tour would be just simply 5++

We booked the premium upper deck tickets and highly recommend paying the extra, as it was well worth it. We can’t fault anything about the cruise, it was fantastic. The food was absolutely delicious, but what really made the trip so enjoyable was the staff. They were all so friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. Hannah, Sam, and Jack on the boat and Ollie - guide on Sarah Island, thank you all so much, we had a terrific day.

Well we were supposed to go on the other cruise boat of the Gordon river, however they had an issue with the boat and were not running so they shifted us to this cruise. The only frustrating part of this was the morning cruise was full so we had to go on the evening cruise and stay an extra night in Strahan.

Gordon River Cruises is a Very well run cruise, staff are very informed and attentive. Boat is comfortable and the food is decent. It’s a very smooth ride and you receive narration of key land marks and stories through the ride. You stop at two points the Sarah island stop is very good you receive a guided tour and get to hear history of the for prison on this site.

It’s a great way to see an historic landmark and definitely worth the visit.

There’s nothing else really happening in Strahan so it’s a long way to come for the cruise try plan around other sites.

With our windows seat on the main deck we had a great view of the passing day while listening to the great informative commentary. From time to time a video would come on the overhead screen showing a dramatisation of the local area's history which was great. The buffet lunch was delicious and plentiful as well as being very coved safe. For us the stand out was the staff who were so pleasantly helpful, especially Hannah who is an absolute credit to the company. Loved the Heritage Forest walk and our guided visit of Sarah Island.
We definitely would recommend doing this cruise with Gordon River Cruises.

Firstly, the purpose built vessel with hybrid drive set a new benchmark. It cooked along at 27-28 knots with very little drama for the passengers so we were impressed with the technology and hull design. Once it hit the river system switching to electric power was brilliant.

The fish farms were a bit of a distant ‘drive by’ but the onboard explanation was helpful.

Next the food was served buffet fashion and the choices were good. It was not described as gourmet but was tasty and plentiful if you were hungry. Over a several hour adventure more drinks would have been welcome.

The natural splendor of the river, logging and stop to see Huon Pine was great.

The highlight was the visit to Sara Island and the history of the convict settlement, very well presented by the guide who created a sense of mystery and intrigue.

Left with mixed feelings. The boat is brilliant, the itinerary is excellent and the information is well delivered. Truly unique. A few other unique featues that detract from the experience. You pay a lot for your tickets but can't choose your seats. Covid spacing is good. Not so good when you are seated in the very back row behind lots of empty rows. Couldn't hear the tour guide, couldn't see the tour guide and so obviously when she pointed to something unusual it was pretty pointless. "See the seals over there (pointing)". No. See the huon pine just there (pointing)? No.

Lunch was a buffet and if you had the basic seats ($150+) there were no drinks. Had to be purchased. No internet so cold hard cash (whatever that is) or run up a tab. No drinks with a buffet meal. Truly unique. The more expensive seating had it laid on so what is the message? Only the well heeled deserve the full experience

The sites themselves have been modified to cope with the huge numbers that go on this tour. Its a shame. Very well built sturdy pram and wheelchair friendly paths that virtually ruin the areas they have opened up. Nowhere near as intrusive in the other national parks in Tas.

2 nights in Strahan treating ourselves to a premier upper deck experience with Gordon River Cruises. Now this was a highlight, gold class touches every step of the way and if you’re able to, I recommend splurging on this one. The vessel, crew, food and beverage experience was all A1.
Cruising down through the waterways to the World Heritage wilderness and remembering the fight to preserve this beauty was truly mesmerizing. Just stunning and how fortunate we were to do this in style, it really was something special.

Hi nOnly, We are so lucky to have such a beautiful area preserved for us to enjoy on a daily basis. All thanks to the people that fought so hard to save it back in the 1980's. Kind regards

We thouroughly enjoyed our cruise. The commentary onboard was informative. We disembarked at Sarah island and was met by our guide Ingrid from Round Earth company. Ingrid was enthusiastic, well informed and obviously passionate in her attempt to help us understand the history of Sarah Island.
After another short cruise we disembarked at Heritage Island for a self guided walk (boardwalk) through the lush rainforest.
Morning tea consisted of a hot drink (large mug) and muffin. The meal on board was wonderful, cold meats, fresh salmon, cheeses, dried fruits and many salads.
Regardless of the inclement weather, we had a fantastic day and would highly recommend Gordon River Cruises.

Hi Kym, Sometimes the weather is all part of the experience of cruising on the Gordon River. You can just imagine how it was for the convicts on Sarah Island . Kind regards

We had a lovely trip with our three teenager's, I was a little worried that they would get a bit bored with the 6 hour cruise but they were super happy and really enjoyed themselves.
I do recommend booking mid ship and get the blue window seats, they are much more comfortable they have headrests and can be reclined for a long day, I also recommend getting the seats at the stern of the ship as it is much quieter than the bow.
Make sure you take the kids out to the front deck when you are going through the heads as it's spectacular and so much fun!
The lunch was delicious and very satisfying.
Take jackets and be prepared for the weather to change quickly.
We would like to thank Hanna and Eliza for their happy smiley face's all day long. Great day, very happy .
