About Gordon River Cruises
Gordon River Cruises is an award winning wilderness experience in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Departing from Strahan on Tasmania's west coast, Gordon River Cruises offers half day cruises on the Gordon River aboard its sleek, purpose built tour vessel, Spirit of the Wild. Spirit of the Wild was purpose-built in Hobart, especially for the Gordon River. She is an impressive 33m catamaran, fitted with a unique hybrid propulsion system that allows you to cruise the wilds of the Gordon River under electric motors that push Spirit of the Wild along very, very quietly. There is no better way to appreciate the remarkable tranquility of this UNESCO World Heritage-listed place than aboard Spirit of the Wild. Our dedicated on guides take you through western Tasmania's rugged natural and human history, while new character-based interpretation videos take you back in time to hear tales of hardship and heroics. A beautiful lunch is included in your Gordon River Cruise.

We have seen more of Tasmania over the past 12 months and, again, this weekend did not disappoint. The Gordon River Cruise was sensational and up there with anything we have experienced internationally. If you can afford to, book the Premium Upper Deck as it enhances an already wonderful experience. The staff are fantastic, the food fresh and something for everyone, local wines spot on and, of course, the cruise itself out of this world. We would definitely take this cruise again.

Where do I start with this review? This was such a memorable day out. The scenery of Macquarie Harbour was beautiful. The commentary was spot on ie informative but not in your ear all day. The staff could not do enough for you. The lunch was delicious. The tour of Sarah Island was amazing. All up a great day out. We were so lucky with the weather as the mist made for beautiful photos.

Booked at the last minute and worth every cent. Sarah Island tour was so interesting Guy the tour guide was really good and just kept us all interested in the history. Katrina's knowledge of the plants was soon good, and a lovely person with it.. Alex our Steward was so friendly and gave us really great service. The tour was a really good combination and we loved going out through Hells Gates.

Up extra early, as today we planned to explore the Gordon River World Heritage UNESCO site. But of course, to the Coffee Shack first. Refreshed, we boarded the Spirit of The Wild vessel (fantastic seats on the premium upper deck) and travelled up Macquarie Harbour (the 2nd largest harbour in Oz, behind Port Phillip) to “Hell’s Gate” where the harbour joins the Southern Ocean. It was incredibly windy. We then headed up the Gordon River into the wilderness. The greenies out there will recall the infamous Gordon River Dam protests (1978-1983), which essentially consolidated the green movement and put Australia on the world environmental stage. Untouched; Pristine landscapes. Then to Sarah Island (for the males) and next door, Grummet Island (female convicts), which was the original penal colony, pre-dating Port Arthur. It has a very interesting (ie horrible) past. We learnt quite a bit.
