Our much anticipated Mother-Daughter adventure in beautiful Tasmania was made even more memorable! Guide Chris Stopp (‘Stopper) is an expert Fly Fisherman, fantastic host and all round great human being! My 50+3 birthday (Covid delay) was spent with Mum on Penstock Lagoon! A few decent ‘offers’ from brown trout and ‘almost’ brought one aboard (I have witnesses 🤣)…. this trout is now ‘decorated’ but I was reassured this is temporary. I will forever remember this amazing day on the water surrounded by Tasmania’s wild country. Plenty of humour, a tasty lunch supplied by ‘Stopper’ and finished off with a delicious birthday dinner of fresh Tassie Scallops and a glass or two of wine at the Central Highlands Hotel.
Highly recommend! Plan to be back!

Tas High Country Tours were fabulous. Chris Stopp (“Stopper”) guided my wife and I for a few days on our first trip to Tassie to fly fish. We were based in Miena, and fished a number of the surrounding lakes, lagoons and tarns. Chris was an excellent host, going above and beyond to make sure we had a great time. At times the fishing was challenging due to a sudden unexpected increase in water temperature, but Chris’ local knowledge, ability to quickly adapt to the changing environment as well as his patience and persistence ensured my wife and I (relative novices) still caught a few trout. On a personal note, Chris is extremely personable, patient, and a great raconteur.

Overall this was a fantastic experience and we both hope to be back as soon as possible to continue our fly fishing adventures with Chris.

PS I haven't changed my profile details (yet). We now live in Sydney. NSW.

Thank you David and Heidi - it was a great fun trip with a variety of fly fishing experiences. Thank you for sharing "Woodlands Cabin" which provided some flexibility with program management and made catering so much easier. I like to think of each day as an adventure ... and a continuing learning process. Tight lines.

Tas High Country tours were fabulous. We were based in Miena, and fished a number of the surrounding lakes. While we happened to strike difficult weather, Chris Stopp’s enthusiasm shone through, and we all caught fish. Chris’s knowledge was very impressive, and we had a wonderful time.

Thanks Jonathon. It was a great pleasure to work with Rod Turton of "Trout Flat Out" to develop a guiding program to suit the needs of your group. Less experienced anglers in Tasmania benefit greatly from more intensive skills tuition and guiding, but "experienced anglers" catch more fish and enhance their skills with leadership from local guides. The fresh weather was a challenge, but all anglers worked diligently to catch "difficult trout" during the weekend. It is always a pleasure to share a bit of local knowledge. Tight lines.

Chris hosted my father and I for a few days on our first trip to Tassie and my first time fly fishing. He was an excellent host, going above and beyond to make sure we had a great time, ate well, and kept safe and warm. The fishing wasn't easy, but his local knowledge, patience and persistence ensured both my dad and I caught a few trout, despite the conditions. He's also very personable, loves a laugh, and can tell a good story or three.

A strong recommendation from me. Thank you so much Chris, hope to be back some day!

NB: Chris has a strong safety focus, and is very accommodating of people with medical conditions.

Thank you James and John for a great four days. The High Country weather was "refreshingly alpine cool" at times, but John stayed warm with literally several layers of insulation when required. I will forever recall you both catching well conditioned Brown Trout that were "tailing" at dawn at Little Pine Lagoon when the temperature was just 2*C. It was great fun. Each session saw your skills develop. Thank you for your persistance and very good humour.

Stopper came highly recommended to us by my dad and he did not disappoint!
He found us a beautiful camp site for our first night in Tassie and even came to give a couple of novices a casting crash course the night before our charter. He’s knowledge of the area and fish habitat was second to none. We found Stopper to be a fantastic instructor and was very patient with our sometimes ‘slappy’ casts.
We would highly recommend Tas High Country Fly Fish Tours to anyone looking for an experienced and knowledgeable fishing guide to get the most out of everything this amazing place has to offer.
We enjoyed our tour so much that we even booked a second tour on our way home!
Thanks Stopper for such an amazing experience, we will be back!!

Thank you Michelle for your great review. James and you were very quick to "get into polaroiding" and fly fishing in the Western Lakes which was fantastic. I didn't have the opportunity to show Michael and Paddianne the 19 Lagoons, but it would be a real thrill to look after you all on a future trip. (I'd find another Guide to help.) Your Campers were the best I have ever seen. I'll bring my swag next time too. Tight lines.

Fishing with Christopher was an absolute pleasure and an experience that I’ll never forget. His local knowledge and ability to locate the elusive trout is unparalleled.
The enthusiasm beared by Christopher results in there never being a dull moment. A fly fisherman of any skill level would have an absolute blast and gain a world of knowledge from fishing with him. A guided fly fishing trip in Tassie would be incomplete without Christopher on the reigns. I had an absolutely wonderful time and it was an experience that I’ll truly never forget. Thanks again Christopher for your hospitality!

I've had the pleasure to fish with Stopper from Tas. High Country Fly Fishing Tours on numerous occasions and can honestly say I've learnt more from him than any other guide I've ever used. Tasmania is a unique fly fishing destination and is extremely challenging to fish. Without a good guide, you can wander aimlessly for days not even seeing a fish. Stopper has immense knowledge of the Tasmanian landscape and razor sharp eyesight for spotting trout ensuring any novice, intermediate or even advanced fly fisherman would gain valuable experience from spending time with him. On top of this, Stopper's enthusiasm for fly fishing is second to none which has always ensured we've had an awesome time every trip we've had with him. And talk about fish - check out the photo's!

Thank you Richard for your kind remarks. From our first trip you have developed excellent skills for fishing for the toughest Trout and the wiliest, most cunning Permit or Blue Bastards. You have taken fly fishing to the next level. You have fished in Tasmania, the lakes and rivers of South Island (NZ), Hinchinbrook, Weipa and the incredible Wessel Islands. There is no doubt that "visual fishing" provides the greatest learning experience ... I look forward to another trip with "Sticky" soon.

Thanks Hugh - It's great fun "polaroiding" and "hunting" trout with you. I have noticed that the "apres-fish" refreshment is not something to back away from either. We might celebrate that with a G&T - what do you think?

Chris knows the Central Highlands like no else.
Success with a fly rod in this location is challenging.
You need to be in the right place, at the right time, with the right fly, in front of a trout you have seen before it sees you.
Use Chris and you stack the odds very much in your favour!

Thank you very much, Barry. You are a great fly fisher with "super-precision" casting skills and global experience in both fresh and salt water. Polaroiding trout is pretty challenging stuff, isn't it? It can be all "up-close" and very personal ... and of course, the fish is under no obligation to eat your beautifully tied fly ... but it's magic when they do!!

If you’re after a guided fly fishing adventure in Tassie look no further. Christopher is awesome. As a novice fly fisherman I’m not sure Christopher was aware of what he’d signed up for but he excelled. His passion and knowledge of the region are inspiring. All the gear required was supplied and in top notch condition. We fished from his boat and he also took us to a little hidden gem on foot to try our luck after lunching on the bank of a lake. Wonderful experience and a true gentleman who I would highly recommend.

Terrific pleasure, Conor. Tassie trout are NOT easy. It was a great pleasure to provide some tuition, to see you develop the basic skills, to introduce you to a few opportunities and to see you bring everything together. There are thousands of lakes and glacial tarns out there with challenging trout in them. I'm looking forward to next time too!!
