Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Drove up from Deloraine for the day. The weather was foul for a lot of the top of the mountain but it added to the experience. Under grey skies and low cloud, the lake looked menacing. The views of the mountains from Pine Lake back down the way we had come were awesome, with rugged rock faces immersed in cloud one minute and stark against blue sky the next. Despite the presence of many shacks, it’s still a wild place

After sunrise arrival at Devonport I looked at map for alternate drive south to Hobart.
Glad I went via the Great Lake (& others). A beautiful, big and scenic route.
Fascinated by the shacks around Miena town region.
Next visit to Tassie I’ll plan a stay in this area.

We love driving down through the lakes when heading South in Tasmania, rather than taking the boring Midland highway. This time we drive through snow and saw a wombat running across the road.

Great Lake is world renown for its trout fishing but it is also well worth the extra kilometers as an alternative route when driving north - south..... the views are spectacular

Ok we had gale force winds so Great Lake was a bit wind swept so we tried fishing there but there are better options with less water between fish.

A most enjoyable couple of days at and around the Lake. We took all our camping gear and food, had a camp fire yet wood was a little scarce but we found enough and left the extra for the next campers to use. Our car navigated to the water's edge easily thou many modern cars would not do the same without experiencing damage. There was a fuel and food shop in the region but did not appear open thus could not be relied on. We did go early in the week and not the weekend. Wombats were the only animals we say camping, wallabies when driving around the lakes. Please drive carefully with the wallabies. Fishing is permitted with an Inland Fishing permit.

Visited on Thursday 15th November. We drove from Hobart to Devonport inland and covered the western side of the Great Lake from Miena to Breona. Stunning scenery and plenlty of places to stop and have a closer look.

Did the lake clockwise moving up the mountains - first stop little town of Poatina (interesting in a weird way). Called into all of the suggested vantage points and viewing platforms as we circled the Great Lake. It’s high Alpine country so nothing out of the ordinary. Had lunch at the Great Lake Hotel in Miena (log fire the highlight - food was fine) and proceeded back to camp via the A5 towards Liffey. It’s really fishing country and worth the drive if you have a day to spare in Tasmania.

Super spot! The stacks on the way are very interesting! It’s amazing to see such a huge man made lake. The history behind it is good too
