- Temmina KHamilton, New Zealand6 contributionsA mountain goat experience !Absolutely by far the best view of Wineglass Bay can be seen from the top of Mt Amos but be prepared for a tough climb! It’s straight up and over huge smooth rocks that are difficult to get a grip on. You need to be fit, wear good shoes and it has to be a nice day - no rain - as the rocks would be impossible to climb. We did it in 3 hours allowing a half hour to take some photos.Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 February 2023
- louise2 contributionsWorth it for the viewBreath taking view, better than wineglass bay lookout. Think twice about doing hike if its recently rain. It had rained the day before and it was extremely slippery definitely need good hiking shoes. Walk is not for the faint hearted steep and lots of scrabbling.Visited February 2023Written 16 February 2023
- Berli001Bunbury, Australia8 contributionsStunning views of wineglass bay. Only attempt if the weather is dry!!I nearly bailed on this hike after hearing about how challenging it was and if it had rained “don’t attempt” due to how slippery it would be…. Well it had rained so we had to wait an extra day to do the climb so the rock face had time to dry out! As it was smooth & quite steep with no grip! We set off at 5am to get the best sunrise view from the top. Make sure you have a headlamp or torch!! As it was nearly 1.5 hours of darkness! You “definitely” need great hiking shoes with good grip, don’t even attempt in gym shoes! (That would be madness). I regretted not wearing grippy gloves! We had amazing weather…. It was warm and even at the top it was still with no breeze, apparently this is rare! The views from the top were breathtaking…. Magical …. We could had stayed up there for aging admiring the view! The climb down was faster & easier than I thought. Biggest tip!!!! Definitely don’t climb if wet or rain is forecast!!!! It would be extremely dangerous!!!!Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 March 2023

Amazing views but very hard work getting up to the top. WEAR SHOES WITH GRIP!! At times it’s quite scary as you are climbing up a rock face which can be slippy with little place to grip onto. Avoid if raining. We came down most the way on our bottoms resulting in a full moon at the end 😂
Favourite hike I’ve done due to the views and incredible sense of accomplishment at the end.

A tough hike for the unexperienced. Definitely need a good pair of hiking shoes, especially if it had been raining.. I slid most of the way down because it was too slippery to stand. A beautiful view at the top but not sure it was worth the injurys. I'd recommend doing the look out walk instead if you are not an experienced hiker.

We loved doing this trail. Definitely need a reasonable level of fitness and some courage in a few spots. We went a day after rain so the track was a bit wet and slippery in a few spots. Being a bit height challenged, I had to rely on my upper strength to pull myself up in a few spots. At the Ranger station they recommended that if we didn't see the yellow track marker within 3 minutes from the last one to turn back until you located. Great recommendation, easy to get off track, just need to take the time to look around to locate them. Once at the top the view was spectacular. So worth the climb. I was most scared about the trip down but once I started it wasn't so bad. Recommend good hiking pants as coming down requires a good bit of time sliding on your bottom. Return trip took us just under 3 hours with time for a few photos and a quick bite to eat. Highly recommend this one. Amazing!

I read a lot of reviews and talked to a number of people before attempting this climb with my husband ( he was keen, me not so much). I am reasonably fit and athletic, but a bit of a scaredy-cat and this climb was definitely doable. Not easy, but certainly worth it for the view and sense of achievement. I did spend a lot of time on my butt ( on the way down), but no injuries. Some advice: proper hiking shoes are essential as it is VERY slippery in sections, take plenty of water and sunscreen, give yourself plenty of time, stick to the yellow markers ( we heard some people who were stuck in the bushes), a pair of mountain bike gloves would have been handy, and enjoy the breathtaking view! The good thing is that you can always stop and go back if you decide it’s not for you. The view is one of the best I’ve seen in Australia. Give it a go!

I climbed to the summit with my 9 year old son (he is fit/plays sport everyday). Was hesitant at first after reading reviews but happy we did it - the view was worth the climb! Plus you can turn around at any point. We began early in the morning on a sunny day (too slippery and dangerous in the rain or after rain) and wore long pants (in case there were snakes - luckily didn’t see any), bushwalking boots and hats (wanted to wear grippy gloves but couldn’t find any at local shops). First part of the track was walking, then the rest is bolder scrambling. Took a light pack with water, snacks, whistle and first aid kit (just in case). There were a lot of people doing the climb at the same time, so we felt safe. Slid most of the way down on our bottoms like a lot of other people were doing :) it was a once in a lifetime climb!

This climb is not for the faint hearted - I made sure I was well informed of what I was in for, before leaving! (Read blogs, watch YouTube videos etc.)
Firstly, I am afraid of heights and my balance is not great, so I scrambled most of the way, particularly on descent, which was both time and energy consuming. My husband is taller, not afraid of heights and seemingly has much better balance than me, so scrambling was minimal for him and he found the whole climb and descent much easier than I did.
The ascent was about as difficult as I anticipated, but the descent was at least twice as hard! It required a lot of concentration and coordination to avoid slipping.
My advice:
1. Carry sunscreen to reapply
2. Use insect repellant
3. Wear gloves (great for scrambling - my hands got totally thrashed!).
4. Carry plenty of water
5. Dry weather and good grippy shoes essential. Would be extremely dangerous in wet conditions.
As others have said, the climb and descent is 100% worth it for the view!

Hiked Mt. Amos as a last minute recommendation. Excellent but strenuous hike. Beautiful scenery and saw a cute little snake.

-Are there any tours that go to the summit of Mt Amos?
-Would it be better to wear rock climbing shoes or bushwalking boots?
-How much water should I take?
-Will I need a jacket at the top?

You can climb Amos by yourself. Leave from the Wineglass Bay carpark. Sturdy walking boots best. Old clothes as you will spend some time sliding on your backside. Take another layer for the top. Can get windy. On hot days you might need 2 litres of water.

Hi, is it possible to carry a 1’year old baby in the carrier and go climb up?

Hi Jerry, I already found it extremely difficult just carrying a backpack on a dry day and and it was still slippery to me. You can also expect to use your hands and knees to make this climb, so not advisable to bring your baby.
Would my 8 year old daughter be able to climb Mt Amos?
She is a regular bush walker, and has walked Cape Raoul several times.
Cheers

If she is a regular bush walker I believe so. She is probably much fitter than I am. Good shoes, plenty of water. Enjoy.

Hi Craig, your review sounds helpful. I too have done the Grouse Grind a few years back now. We are planning a trip over the Easter long weekend. How long would you say the hike is to that lookout? A mate was saying it only took about 40mins, is that about right? I the climb to the lookout fairly hard? I know the climb down to the beach I've heard is challenging. Thanks for your help.
Kind regards,
Michelle

For the Mt Amos climb (not the wineglass bay hike), it took me & my boyfriend 1.5 hour to climb up, granted my boyfriend had to stop a lot to help me up. Agreed that the rocks become very slippery, even in dry conditions (Do not even attempt to do this climb if it rained the night before).
And i agree with other TA reviewers that you will need both hands as you climb higher. I wore shorts as it was a very hot day and i ended up with some cuts on my knees (nothing serious). It's pretty windy up there , but the view is VERY REWARDING!!!
Good luck :)
