- Aussie_2012Melbourne, Australia962 contributionsGreat beach and lookout views ... and lots of stepsAs many reviews may have mentioned this has been voted numerously one of the most scenic beaches in the world. It was a bucket list place to come to and glad we did. Park in the car park closest to the track start but come early (before 10am) as the place gets completely full including the road leading into the area. We did start early and got a car spot nice and close but saw as we were leaving the area around 11am that the place was totally packed. The trail itself is not for the faint hearted. A lot of steps and I mean a lot – about 500 at least. It is done extremely well so all credit to the National Park. The view from the lookout is impressive but the highlight is undoubtedly the beach (which I've included in this review cause you'll do both). There are a few toilets tucked up the bush near the beach and you can walk along the beach for quite a way. The water is picturesque and idyllic. Well worth the hike. Just be prepared for a lot of steps and please go early as this place is busy.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 January 2024
- Julia ZNoosa, Australia44 contributionsBeautiful viewLovely scenic short walk, took us about hour round trip. Some stairs and uphill walking, view was definitely worth it! Would recommend while visiting TAS ! Note - National Parks pass is required, it cost us around $90 for the 2 month Holiday Pass there are other options available online.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 May 2024
- Renee19011,124 contributionsSteep hike, great viewsViews were definitely worthwhile and we had a sense of achievement making it to the top. But I don’t recall reading in advance about all the steps and how steep the path was. Omg, just beware. Anyone under 35yo should be fine, but those over this age especially if not routinely fit will feel it. Omg, did I mention all the stairs? 😂Visited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten 20 September 2024

I had talked to someone previously about the walk to Wineglass Bay involving lots of stairs and they weren't kidding. We drove to the Wineglass Bay car park and got our walking shoes on (tip - wear proper walking shoes). We went in mid January, and I thought it would be colder than it actually was. Definitely brought too many jumpers, layering works but make sure you have a t shirt underneath as after doing the hundreds of stairs you won't be needing a jumper any more. Definitely use sunscreen and definitely bring a hat - I didn't and I regretted it.
The weather was overcast so the views were nice but would have been improved with blue skies. But still a lovely walk. Keep in mind there are a LOT of stairs. You have to climb up them to get that view of Wineglass Bay you see in the photos (that walk takes about an hour depending on how fast you walk) and then to get to the beach itself, you walk down heaps of stairs... And you guessed it - you walk back up them again to go back. Someone said there was a water taxi you could catch at the beach but I hadn't heard of it and didn't see any. Maybe research that if you're not keen on climbing so many stairs. We would not classify ourselves as very fit, and were able to do it with slightly jelly legs at the end and had burning legs while doing the stairs. However, our legs and butt are most likely more muscular and defined now. I would definitely reconsider doing it if you have any lower limb problems that would stop you or get exacerbated by the stairs. My watch told me the whole walk (including beach) took 2 hours, 12000 steps and 109 flights of stairs.
You can get to the lookout and turn back though. The beach is optional. So that halves the number of stairs you have to do. The beach is nice, not the nicest I've been to (but then there are many amazing beaches along the east coast of Australia) but a good place to rest, sit down and have a picnic. Or a swim if you're keen (but it was too cold for me to swim in mid Jan)

This is a must do for anyone visiting the Freycinet Peninsula. The walking track is brilliant. The builders' have created the most user friendly trail through moderate hilly terrain my wife and I have walked on. When you go beyond the lookout and down the significantly steeper trail to Wineglass Bay beach, the standard is maintained and the height of each step and the spacing between is ideal, making what can be a little more challenging descent/ascent, comfortable. Once at the bottom of the trail we walked the length of the beach to a sheltered cove at the end. I'd seen this cove in photographs and wanted to go there for a swim. We brought our lunch, swam and relaxed. It was as awesome as I'd hoped, with the crystal clear water, peace and quiet and some wildlife to be seen both in and out of the water. An absolutely unique spot and the perfect place to spend the last day of 2019. A definate highlight of our awesome trip to Tassie!!

Great hike to the lookout place for Wine glass bay. It’s took us an hour up and down. It’s bit steep and can be tiring if you are unfit or have any injuries. We did not do the trail to the beach as we were short of time but I would recommend as the beach looked amazing and is only accessible by trail or boat.

The upgrades that have been done to the lookout in recent years are exceptional, providing multiple vantage points of Wineglass bay. It is a must visit in this area. The track up is steep, but inclines are all stepped and the track path is even and well maintained. Apart from the last two to three hundred metres, the track is one way (up) with alternative one way track down, to help manage the number of walkers.
There is ample parking in the car park at the base of the track and the overflow parking area has also been improved in recent years.
The best view of Wineglass Bay you can get from the ground apart from climbing the summit of Mt Amos!

We did the short walk around the lighthouse where you can look back to wineglass bay. The walk is only 15 minutes if you didn't stop. Its a flat walk. You drive a short distance from the tourist information Centre. The wineglass bay tours want to charge you $290 per person. Just a rip off! No food, just a seat on the boat. I refuse to pay these operators such exorbitant prices. I can see why some only go once a day. I am sure the weather also plays a part because the wind goes right through you and the bay can be quiet rough. Check in with the Tourist information Centre and they will give you the options available. You can buy a ticket from the tourist centers valid for twelve months to access all the national parks throughout Tasmania. You can have up to 8 people on the one ticket. cost is around $82.

Myself and my 10 year old daughter did this on our way up to Bridport. Picked up the National Parks pass from the information centre. If you are from interstate with a hire car and planning on doing both this and Cradle Mountain go for the Holiday Pass cost $80 for 2 months. Being from QLD we rugged up with snow jacket, beanie and gloves…by about 10 mins into the walk we were stripping off. This walk definitely gets the heart rate going body temp up and suggest taking minimal items. Lots of steps so not ideal for those with bad knees. Worth it when you get to the top. We went on quite a windy day but it was still beautiful.

The sign says it takes 1 to 1.5hrs to do the return walk up to the Wineglass bay lookout for the circuit. It took about 35 minutes to get up and 20 minutes to get down and we spent about 20 minutes at the lookout enjoying the gorgeous views. We are both 48 with average fitness so the timing is pretty spot on. The walk up is a pretty even gradient with a few steep pinches but nothing to strenuous. There are some nice views over Coles bay when going up. When getting to the look out area, there is nice board walks and some seating. The lighting with the clouds going over really put some different textures into the landscape which was beautiful. There are more choices of walks you can do, but for timing, we chose this one. As the sign says, take some water with you and a jumper as the weather can change rapidly. Still, an amazingly beautiful natural area.

We visited about 15 years ago and were very impressed at how much work has been done to upgrade this walk since. We loved the view then and luckily it hasn’t changed much. Still stunning and a must see for visitors to Tasmania. If you have time the walk down and around from there is also worthwhile, but this time we didn’t do it.

Have done this walk before and it was super crowded with tourists and this time it was quiet and far more enjoyable. A bit of a tiring walk but not too bad. Beautiful rock formations and view of wineglass bay at the end.
Kudos to the talented people who built the walking tracks, retaining walls, bridges and seats all the way - impressive workmanship and skill. This isn't something generally seen at Australian national parks!

The Wineglass Bay Lookout has been a place I've wanted to visit for some time, and it didn't disappoint. Lucky to get a stunning day, it truly does offer one of the most spectacular views in Tasmania. After entering the Freycinet National Park and arriving at the car park, it is a 30-60 minute walk up to the lookout (depending on fitness). The first half is gradual and comfortable, but be aware the 2nd half is very steep at times and not suitable for people with breathing or mobility issues. If you're fit enough, definitely make the effort, it is worth it.

Is it possible to enter the park before 8am if we purchase a national park ticket online? Does anyone know if you need to have your pass printed?
Thanks!

There is a unmanned “payment station” in the parking area - clear instructions displayed on how to use it : Lift lid, complete details on envelope, insert cash into envelope, tear off slip (to be displayed on your dashboard as proof of payment) and then post envelope in slot.

Hi I am travelling with my dad who is 78.I do want to go to the wineglass bay but not sure if the walk is good for dad. Also, any idea what is there to do in the national park for a person with limited walking abilities. All I am seeing are rather long walks. There is no point going if we cant do anything. Any ideas?
Written 29 November 2019

Will it safe to carry a infant (1 Year 3 months) to walk onto the Wineglass Bay Lookout ?
Written 30 July 2019
I agree with the other comments. Safe to carry a baby, and there are places to rest. Also look at doing the boat trip to Wineglass Bay, well worth it!

Hi! Is there a lookout you can just drive straight up to for Wineglass Bay/freycinet area? And if so, where is it? We have a 10mth baby.
Also i assume you can go for a swim there? Thanks!
Written 1 March 2017
Go to the visitor center first. If you don't have one, purchase your parks pass here. The staff is very friendly and helpful.
You can drive up to Cape Tourville and walk around the light house with great views and easy access (it's very windy up there).
Sleepy Bay is only accessible by a steep track - not suitable for strollers or swimming.
Wineglass Bay lookout is one hours hike up, up, up, quite steep at times and not suitable for strollers; but rewards with fantastic scenery.
Wineglass Bay is in the NP and not accessible by car, either hike there (first up, then down, approx 3-4 hours one way), or you can go on a Wineglass Bay cruise from Coles Bay.

Hi there - do I need to buy a ticket to do the wineglass bay trek from car park to the beach?
Written 27 December 2016
The only ticket you need to buy is the one to get into the national park. You buy it at the information centre on the road in
You don't need another ticket to do the walk. Enjoy
