About
The Devonport Regional Gallery presents an annual program of exhibitions, education and public programs including events and workshops, and contributes to the cultural, social and educational life of the local community, boasting an impressive collection of fine art with a focus on Tasmanian contemporary art, craft and design. In the Main & Upper Gallery spaces, exhibitions from the Gallery's Permanent Collection, staff-curated exhibitions and touring exhibitions are displayed. The Little Gallery showcases the work of emerging Tasmanian artists with a focus on artists from the North West Region. The Devonport Regional Gallery evolved from The Little Gallery, which was founded by Jean Thomas in 1966. The Little Gallery was situated in a weatherboard building behind the Baptist Church (built 1904) in Stewart Street, which became the home of the Gallery until 2018. The Gallery then relocated to the heritage-listed building of the paranaple arts centre on Rooke Street in November 2018.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Well worth a visit - free entry. The building is a converted church, and has the most magnificent solid blackwood ceiling - worth a visit for that alone. The sole staff member there was friendly, knowledgeable and helpful.

good location and lovely building
Really liked some of the pieces on exhibition and would have liked to know more about the artists.
A donation is all they ask for - well worth $10

A former church building has been converted into art gallery space in Devonport. It's not a huge space but it's big enough to host exhibitions and a little shop. The exhibition we saw was called 'Coastal: Outdoor Photographs from the Robinson Collection'. It showcases a large photographic collection that the gallery acquired several years ago. The content is local, and dates from the 1920s to the 1950s. Wonderful photos of major events in the region, like royal visits, surf carnivals and beauty contests. Well worth a look.

Devonport Regional Gallery really punches above its weight. Not much more than a single display space in a re-purposed church, its staff wring every bit of potential out of the light and airy premises. There is a great annual program of events, stuff for kids to do, exhibitions drawn from the local council collections to grab the interest of locals as well as touring shows from around Tasmania and interstate, great art prizes (such as Coastal) and the annual commissioned exhibition that funds an artist to develop a body of work in consultation with the DRG curator. Always worth dropping
in for a few minutes or an hour: there's bound to be something to catch the eye. And if you're after a tiny souvenir, there's a terrific range of locally-produced cards available at the teensy shop. Great location, too: the best coffee in Devonport available just up the laneway. Do make a (non-compulsory) donation ... it's worth supporting.

Having read about the gallery and its high caliber of work presented I was looking forward to visiting. The gallery occupies the sanctuary of a former church. The day I went they were exhibiting the RACT Portraiture Contest Exhibit. I found the work to be inspiring and was impressed with the regional talent. If visiting Devonport and you like art I highly recommend visiting.

I have been to the gallery twice to date and have found the work on display well presented and of both quality and artistic merit.
The staff are knowledgeable and helpful.
It is a quiet place and allows for appreciation.

When I visited the exhibition was of a local artist, so in this case it wasn't of mych interest to myself. They do have a some jewelry and books on sale which are reasonably price and quite lovely.

This gallery is small, but it was originally a church. It holds numerous shows throughout the year, but the latest is fantastic. The Moon Collection -frocks. It is showcasing period costumes from the 1800's to the 1950's. Not many pieces but superb detail on the dresses, capes and undergarments. Enough browsing for an hour. I went with a friend on the opening night and it was a fantastic night just looking at the fastenings, beading and wear and tear.
As I said they show paintings, photocgraphs in other shows throughout the year, absolutely worth a look, also its right in the CBD.
