About
Spirit of Tasmania is one of Australia’s most iconic travel experiences, operating sailings across Bass Strait between Melbourne and Devonport on Tasmania’s north coast. Spirit of Tasmania provides travellers with flexibility and convenience when planning a holiday. Our twin ships depart from both ports at 7.30pm and arrive the following morning at 6.00am. During peak season, we also operate day sailings departing from each port at 9.00am and arriving the same day at 6.00pm. On board, you can experience spectacular views, delicious food, great entertainment, relaxation and so much more! Experience the allure of sea travel. It’s fun, relaxing and stress-free. Simply drive on board for a holiday where half the fun is getting there. Embrace the ocean views, stroll the decks and breathe in the sea breeze - there’s nothing quite like it!

- thegurudaveBrisbane, Australia107 contributionsEasiest way to travel to TassieThis was our first trip to Tassie and we were super glad we chose to go with Spirit of Tasmania. We travelled from Brisbane and had 4 days in Melbourne prior to leaving for Tassie. Given the current cost of rental cars it's a substantially cheaper option to utilise your own car for an extended Tassie holiday than fly and rent a car. The ship itself has plenty of room in the common areas with seating/lounges/tables never being at full capacity. The food options were good for dinner and breakfast. The cabins are good for the price. We booked a twin cabin with the single beds. The shower and toilet were clean, and linen and cabin were clean. Much like a plane gets turbulence, the open seas can get bumpy which we did experience on the trip to Devonport so just be aware it's not a river cruise if the weather is wild. Highly recommended and the only way I would travel to Tasmania.Visited November 2022Written 29 November 2022
- OurtravelsPottsville, Australia23 contributionsOverall excellent experience…Excellent organisation getting cars/caravans and people onto boat. A well laid out boat, ample space to walk around. A well appointed bar and dining room. An overall excellent experience.Visited December 2022Written 30 December 2022
- Blue Mountaineer8 contributionsPleasantly surprisedThis is a really good service. We had an overnight cabin over to Tassie with a porthole (couldn't have done an inside cabin) which was small but clean and adequate. My partner slept well but I struggled due to movement of the boat which wasn't terrible but enough to keep me awake. Loading the car on and off was really easy and well organised. Staff were pleasant and the boat itself was clean and tidy. Had a recliner back to Geelong during the day which was great. Everyone around us was quietly reading or snoozing which made it very relaxing. Wandered around the boat a bit to get food and fresh air, so weren't in the lounge the whole time but you can leave your stuff on your chair and there are electric and USB sockets which was helpful. Only let down was food quality. It was edible but could have been a lot better.Visited December 2022Written 3 January 2023
- LeahstandfieldAdelaide, Australia13 contributionsVery pleasantly surprised!Loved our trip on SOT to Tasmania and back again to Geelong. The staff were super friendly & the porthole cabin was simple, clean & perfect for our needs. The restaurant & bars were great. The restaurant is buffet style and the food was good. We don’t have kids but noticed there seemed to be plenty of kids activities. I was nervous about the trip as I’m not great on boats but it was relatively smooth sailing & I was asleep both times by the time it got slightly rocky. I didn’t get sea sick at all. I took 2 Quell as soon as I got on. The process for loading & unloading the car was streamline. We had to wait a while on the return trip & we we’re last on but first off on the morning which was good.Visited January 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 January 2023
- PamelaSS888Canberra, Australia1,267 contributionsBest trip ever across the Bass StraitThe Spirit of Tasmania glides across the Bass Strait. Last Saturday we had the smoothest trip ever across the Bass Strait on the Spirit of Tasmania ferry. The Bass Strait can be very rough with the Roaring 40s winds whipping up the waters. But thankfully for my friend’s first ever trip on a ferry it was like gliding on glass the whole way with glorious views of the ocean and the sky. The ferry was packed with 500 cars and around 1400 passengers. The trip from Devonport to Geelong takes about 10 hours to travel the 454 km. It was two hours late leaving so we didn’t get off until 11pm before driving to a friend’s place in Port Melbourne. If you are planning on staying in Geelong, you need to book ahead as it is always very busy there now the ferry terminal has moved there. You also need to book ahead for Devonport or Burnie. The ferry has many lounges and outdoor areas across the top deck and the trip seems to go quickly. We booked a recliner lounge which is a great idea for either the day or night crossings as it’s a quiet, darkened area where you can sleep or relax during the trip. There are coffee bars, a restaurant and cafes on board or you can take your own food items for the trip. The two ferries are busy with day and night crossings every day at present – as soon as we unloaded, the next lot of vehicles and people went on and off it went again for a night crossing. If you are planning a trip over summer, then book early as it can be hard to find a space for your vehicle. A highly recommended trip with or without your car – you can book as a passenger without your car if you wish.Visited January 2023Written 29 January 2023
- JamstarBKSydney, Australia186 contributionsPractical but nothing fancyPractical way to travel with a packed car ready for driving around Tassie. Friendly staff, plenty of food and drink on board and some activities for kids but overall the vibe was akin to an old RSL. We enjoyed the buffet lunch - worth noting a Vegetarian plate is $12.50 compared to $27.50 to include meat options. It’s not advertised anywhere and my partner wished he’d known before adding one piece of chicken to his plate! For the day sail - it’s worth boarding early to get a good spot on your preferred deck. There’s plenty of seating, varying levels of comfort, and different ambience on each deck.Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 February 2023
- Y-NOT- TRAVELMenai, Australia285 contributionsBook a recliner or a cabin !We had to take a day sail as that’s all we could get at the time of booking. So we booked a seat in the recliner lounge. And thankful we had a seat we could lounge in As travelers just take up residence in all the lounge areas and settle in for the entire sail. Disappointed we couldn’t retreat to a lounge area to watch some sport in the allocated sport lounge. Or any of the area’s for that matter. There where bodies laying everywhere! Take my advice, book a recliner or a cabin if you want to sleep the trip away. Take your device on board you’ve got buckles been able to sit and watch something on any of the TV areas on board.Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 February 2023
- Paul39 contributionsNot too badThe staff and their work ethic is fantastic. They were hard working and friendly. The breakfast food is OK but their dinner food was excellent. We had a huge wait to get on at Geelong and had an even bigger wait to get on whilst returning from Devonport. The boat was neatly an hour late. We had a cabin both ways which was quite comfortable except for the smell in the bathrooms both way. Very unpleasant and badly in need of thorough cleaning.Visited February 2023Written 25 February 2023
- Kate CBrisbane, Australia105 contributionsIn the Spirit! We caught the Spirit of Tasmania as we took our car over. I recommend organising a cabin as they were nice and clean and we slept very well. The Top Deck lounge was a lovely place to eat and drink Tasmanian wine. Driving on and off was a simple and well organised process. Would do it again in a heartbeat!Visited March 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 28 February 2023
- LooksatSydney, Australia133 contributionsFun Trip but could be betterWe took our car over to Tassie and the process was pretty uncomplicated In Geelong. Once on it was a great experience; a party atmosphere and the buffet was surprisingly good. Cabin was very comfortable. Boarding on the Tassie side was not so great. Long delays in the sun, no facilities in sight and including blocking local streets at some stages. There was also a delay which landed us in peak traffic heading into Melbourne until we turned off towards Sydney. Later in the journey the delay landed us right in peak Sydney traffic at the other end of our trip. Hard to believe there was no free wifi in this day and age. I believe paid wifi was only available in common areas. This seems very out of step with current expectations.Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 March 2023

I was a little apprehensive about taking the ferry versus flying back to Melbourne because I have mobility issues and Bass Strait has a reputation for being rough, but I decided to do it and I’m glad I did.
I booked a cabin and was given a handicapped / disabled easy access cabin. It was spacious and comfortable. The only issues I had were the window shades didn’t properly work and I had to place pillows at the base to prevent anyone being able to see me, and the tv LCD screen was shattered.
I opted to buy sandwiches (A$7-9) from the on board shop versus dining at the buffet before we reached open water.

We found boarding easy and the room is really clean and comfortable. The staff on board are really friendly and we ate at the restaurant which we thought was good value. I love that there is a non alcoholic drink selection as well so thank you for that. We are travelling with our dog Rosie who is not allowed with us in our cabin. There is talk that TT LINE are considering a pet friendly cabin option. I think a lot of pet owners would be grateful for that. I would give 5 stars if that was the case. Rather than charge premium prices for pet friendly cabins, I hope that TTLine considers taking a refundable pet bond it if the pets do not cause any damage and the room is kept to a good standard. Our dog would have been fine on her own bed in the cabin with us.

My wife and I sailed on the Spirit daytime down to Devonport then night returning , either way is a good experience. The loading and unloading was totally painless and ran like clockwork. We had the recliners which are larger and more comfortable than any plane seats I been in.

I have used this ferry many times over the years it has been in service, one would think it would become a better experience than it is! The loading takes an eternity, and the new wharf site is a nightmare to find the GPS is so confusing.
The ferry itself as changed so much over the years, with many of the attractive features now gone, the restaurant was always a draw card, great food after a long drive, and the front and rear bars were a treat to have a drink and watch the ship leave and make way, all now sadly gone, most likely to reduce staff, the cabins are ok, though getting a bit tired with age, one might expect the price of passage to have decreased as a result of staff cuts, but alas not! Now almost doubled what it used to cost, all in all a tiresome and perfunctory way to cross bass straight, such a pity from the pleasant experience of the past.

This is our fourth trip, travelling by car from Adelaide. Because of the long drive we have booked a Premier cabin each time and we highly recommend.
Cabins are roomy, bed comfortable private shower and toilet and with the addition of complimentary wine and chocolates is the equal to a room in a hotel. The two large windows provide an excellent view of the work involved in leaving and docking. There are various dining options but for us a sandwich, a bottle of wine and a sea view in quiet and comfort makes the trip.

We took our vehicle and booked a deluxe cabin - we thought the logistics of getting all vehicles on and off the ferry was excellent and hindered only by the stupidity of some of the passengers (leaving vehicles unattended in queues etc). The cabin was spacious, included a bottle of Tasmanian Red and bath robes. We had a peaceful sleep - double bed was comfy, and had time to shower and have a coffee before disembarking. Yes it was expensive but we thought well worth the money when we don't travel to Tasmania very often. We did look at the recliners as a possibility for our return trip but these didn't look as good in the flesh (compared to the pics) so we opted for the cabin again. Glad we did - it was overall a great experience.

Completed a 11:30pm departure night crossing in the recliner armchair with partner. Very organised for car boarding and finding your way to the recliner section was easy. Our armchair allocation was great we had 2 chairs with no other chairs next to us. Hot tip take an eye mask - I used mine and found it beneficial as blinds do not stop all the morning glare & main lights did not go out to very late. Also a thank you to medics and staff there was a lady close to us with a medical issue they were kind and decided to move her to a more private section. We did not have breakfast only a coffee which was average but not a real problem. Went to Drift Brunch Cafe in Devonport for brunch - would recommend.

We sailed to Tassie in the day. Sailing in the day was not a good experience. They do have a cinema 🎥 but as we had seen all that was offered we found ourselves just looking at the time to go to the food areas and trying to sort out what to eat on a continuous basis. They have the main Tasmanian Market kitchen for mains and a small selection and then a pantry for small things besides sandwiches, machine coffee, sandwiches, chips, and souvenirs.
I got sick from the chicken in the main kitchen. Veggies were great 👍 as well as 🏜 desert.
We had a room which I recommend even with day sailing. There are only 2 accessible rooms on the Spirit of Tasmania, so if this is what is needed, you need to be booked way in advance. Coffee shop on the 7th floor is great for 'real' coffee. If taking a small pet get a dispensation from your vet yo leave in your van.
Cages and accommodation on board are very ordinary.
Staff were fantastic. Areas were very tidy and clean at all times. Staff were very friendly and accommodating.
Accessible facilities were also great , clean tidy and easy to access.
We recommend 👌 night 🌙 sailing as the way to go.
Being disabled boarding the ship in my chair was a great experience. Staff looked after me exceptionally. I felt safe and well respected by the staff.

What a shame the spirit of Tas now leaves from Geelong. This has added hours to our travel as well as a headache dealing with Melbourne traffic. On the return you are in peak traffic, roads like a carpark. When we travelled to and from Port Melbourne it was a breeze.

Hi Maureen, sorry this is a late reply...hopefully not too late for you.
It has been a while but I'm pretty sure there are lockers on board also if you opt to book a recliner seat, I think they have luggage racks in the private recliner lounge but that will just be a storage area not a secure locker.

Hi, we are travelling to Tasmania in July and due to the very very expensive cost of hiring a car we are looking into sending the car over via the Spirit of Tasmania. I want to know how does it work if we can not be at the ship for pick up at Devonport or Melbourne upon return, can someone else pick it up or do they offer to store it for a few hours until we arrive?
