- FigtreeNew South Wales, Australia103 contributionsGreat experienceWe took our vehicle and booked a deluxe cabin - we thought the logistics of getting all vehicles on and off the ferry was excellent and hindered only by the stupidity of some of the passengers (leaving vehicles unattended in queues etc). The cabin was spacious, included a bottle of Tasmanian Red and bath robes. We had a peaceful sleep - double bed was comfy, and had time to shower and have a coffee before disembarking. Yes it was expensive but we thought well worth the money when we don't travel to Tasmania very often. We did look at the recliners as a possibility for our return trip but these didn't look as good in the flesh (compared to the pics) so we opted for the cabin again. Glad we did - it was overall a great experience.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 October 2023
- Janet RAdelaide, Australia32 contributionsTravel in comfortThis is our fourth trip, travelling by car from Adelaide. Because of the long drive we have booked a Premier cabin each time and we highly recommend. Cabins are roomy, bed comfortable private shower and toilet and with the addition of complimentary wine and chocolates is the equal to a room in a hotel. The two large windows provide an excellent view of the work involved in leaving and docking. There are various dining options but for us a sandwich, a bottle of wine and a sea view in quiet and comfort makes the trip.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 October 2023
- AlanT113Adelaide Hills, Australia259 contributionsNice try, no cigarI have used this ferry many times over the years it has been in service, one would think it would become a better experience than it is! The loading takes an eternity, and the new wharf site is a nightmare to find the GPS is so confusing. The ferry itself as changed so much over the years, with many of the attractive features now gone, the restaurant was always a draw card, great food after a long drive, and the front and rear bars were a treat to have a drink and watch the ship leave and make way, all now sadly gone, most likely to reduce staff, the cabins are ok, though getting a bit tired with age, one might expect the price of passage to have decreased as a result of staff cuts, but alas not! Now almost doubled what it used to cost, all in all a tiresome and perfunctory way to cross bass straight, such a pity from the pleasant experience of the past.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 October 2023
- Mark JSydney, Australia43 contributionsWell run operationMy wife and I sailed on the Spirit daytime down to Devonport then night returning , either way is a good experience. The loading and unloading was totally painless and ran like clockwork. We had the recliners which are larger and more comfortable than any plane seats I been in.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 October 2023
- Jacqui APerth, Australia94 contributionsGreat trip - Pet friendly cabins would be betterWe found boarding easy and the room is really clean and comfortable. The staff on board are really friendly and we ate at the restaurant which we thought was good value. I love that there is a non alcoholic drink selection as well so thank you for that. We are travelling with our dog Rosie who is not allowed with us in our cabin. There is talk that TT LINE are considering a pet friendly cabin option. I think a lot of pet owners would be grateful for that. I would give 5 stars if that was the case. Rather than charge premium prices for pet friendly cabins, I hope that TTLine considers taking a refundable pet bond it if the pets do not cause any damage and the room is kept to a good standard. Our dog would have been fine on her own bed in the cabin with us.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 November 2023
- inthe831185 contributionsOnce in a lifetime for this CalifornianI was a little apprehensive about taking the ferry versus flying back to Melbourne because I have mobility issues and Bass Strait has a reputation for being rough, but I decided to do it and I’m glad I did. I booked a cabin and was given a handicapped / disabled easy access cabin. It was spacious and comfortable. The only issues I had were the window shades didn’t properly work and I had to place pillows at the base to prevent anyone being able to see me, and the tv LCD screen was shattered. I opted to buy sandwiches (A$7-9) from the on board shop versus dining at the buffet before we reached open water.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 11 November 2023
- Llewellyn53Melbourne, Australia4,345 contributionsOKThe ferries are slowly deteriorating - the cooling didn't work in our cabin on the way over and one of the GPO's was falling out of it's mount on the way back. We don't do the buffet any more because it is not a true buffet - you get one plateful and that's it. I would call that a cafeteria. The bonus was that this trip the pizzas were cooked well so that's an improvement. Driving to the eastern suburbs via the Westgate in peak hour after disembarking is a pain now that you arrive in Geelong. Still the best way to get to Tassie with plenty of gear in the car.Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 7 December 2023
- SherineSydney, Australia3 contributionsPerfect Voyage but Entertainer a bludger!Loved the new set up at Geelong after years of inefficiency and congestion at Port Melbourne. No problems at all about the longer drive from Sydney as we were happy to avoid Melbourne in our Campervan and see Geelong! Thank you for the tip about free camping at the Corio shops which was excellent for the night before our sailing. Staff at the port were cheerful, helpful and efficient in processing us and boarding went like clockwork. Voyage was smooth and comfortable with efficient disembarkation at Devenport allowing us to get to a Xmas ballroom dance in Penguin 45 minutes after we docked! Only complaint was the entertainer! We have to point out the poor quality of the entertainment on this voyage which we were looking forward to having experienced quality artists on our previous 4 trips on the Spirit of Tasmania. Mikayla was billed to entertain us from 1 pm for an hour. She arrived a few minutes before one and of course began late. 25 minutes later she had sung 3 songs as she spent loads of time talking and ended her stint 8 minutes early after a further 3 or 4 songs with plenty of distractions and unnecessary chatter in between. It was the worst bludger of a musician we have experienced as an entertainer anywhere. Pretty sure that Spirit of Tasmania paid her to entertain passengers on this long day voyage and not to promote various aspects of Tasmania (she is from Queensland anyway!) to people who were already on the boat heading there! There are plenty of opportunities for passengers to discover what Tassie has to offer at the Tourist desk or online rather than hear an entertainer waste valuable time just yakking. Was so disgusted that we didn't return for her second stint! We hope we have a better experience of real entertainment on our return trip in January with much less useless chatter! Apart from that top marks for Spirit of Tasmania and their staff.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 December 2023
- Aussie_2012Melbourne, Australia960 contributionsGreat way to travel to TasmaniaFirst time taking the car over to Tasmania on this boat. No need to get into the car queue relatively early as the first time we got there quite early and were one of the last off the boat but on the return journey we got there about 40 mins after opening and we were 7th vehicle off the boat. Gates opened 2.5 hours prior to departure with all vehicles starting to board approx. 1.5 prior. We got a recliner seat the first time which I think is best option as you are guaranteed a seat (you get a specific allotted seat) once onboard and the area is nice and quiet compared to either paying a lot more for a cabin or at the other end of the spectrum in which you have to hope to find a seat in the common areas. If it’s a full sailing then you might struggle to find a seat. Onboard there are several food options from a food court, pizzas or a small shop with pies and salad rolls, etc. Strangely there is no free wifi which you pay minimum $5 and even then it isn’t very good. And the movies onboard are also not free. Was quite surprised that these two things were not free. On the return journey we got a cabin for the evening sailing which was adequate although didn't get a great nights sleep as you can still feel the roll of boat. Nevertheless the breakfast was more than fine the next day.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 January 2024
- Tales from Rat ... D3 contributionsLovely voyage with great people. Please build a waiting area at Devonport for when there are delays. The Geelong terminal is efficient with a nice waiting space. The ship was lovely and we had a great time on the trip over. I would note the Devonport side has no waiting area. So on the way back, there was a delay, which they couldn't help, same as planes, and we were stuck in the car for a couple of hours. But the ship is lovely with multiple bars and good food and was very comfortable. Would be great if they could build a waiting area at Devonport though,Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 17 January 2024

Brief return visit from Devonport to Melbourne over past few days. 1st crossing was by day. Day crossing was quite boring but thankfully we'd booked a cabin. Those without a cabin play a game of 'musical chairs' all day (seeking to secure seating - and often too afraid to get up again for fear of losing it). I'd recommend you book a cabin for a day crossing if you can (especially with children or elderly relatives). Breakfast was expensive (a highly processed, and over sauced, bacon & egg panini). Would happily have paid more for quality local bread, a Mt Roland egg and Bok's bacon. Coffee freely available via vending machines. And awful coffee (labelled barista at the bar). By contrast the evening crossing was very comfortable. After a couple of drinks at the bar - whilst watching the tennis and cricket - we fell asleep in our cabin. It's a great boat that manages the wild Bass Strait very well. Loads of staff who are pleasant and competent at their respective roles. Loading and unloading of vehicles works very well indeed.

We have just arrived in Devonport on the Spirit if Tasmania. I had read the negative reports on Trip Advisor and I have to say we have nothing negative to say about our trip. It was in fact quite pleasant, keeping in mind it is a ferry, not a cruise ship, I think the facilities provided to passengers were very good. The staff were excellent. We arrived at 4:50pm and, after an efficient check in and a short wait in the queue, we drove on board. Other cars arrived 6-6:30pm and drove straight on, no waiting. The views of the city at night as we left were beautiful. We had a mild calm night for our crossing and I don’t think the ferry was at capacity in terms of travellers. Our cabin was very comfortable, I slept well. Some clunking at 5:30 am as we neared our destination. There are two decks where food and entertainment (TV) is available. Good Tasmanian wine was available and a choice of light meals on deck 7 or a restaurant style take away meal on deck 10. There were two cinemas with two showings, hence a choice of four movies ($10) Our departure was handled efficiently and if all passengers go to their car when called, the exit is smooth. I thought the coffee was good and the food was nice. Be aware masks must be worn in all common areas on the ferry, except when you are eating and drinking or out on deck. Temperature checks on departure are quick and efficient.
I would recommend this method of getting to Tasmania and as an added bonus it provides jobs for quite a few people.
Tips:
1. only two power points in the cabin and only one of them will fit an iPhone charger plug.
2. I recommend Cafe Squire in Devonport for breakfast, opens at 7pm and the food is delicious.

We travelled on a Sunday and the boat was full. That said, we had a nice basic cabin, went to the cinema and restaurant, and were impressed overall. The cabin was a good size considering it was a simple two bunk bed set up, and having your own bathroom was worth the money alone. The ‘cinema’ is basic and more like a home cinema, plus watching very UK specific ads before the film was an oddity. The restaurant (TMK) was ok... canteen type food and expensive for the quality. We will definitely bring our own food on the return leg. Bars are good though, and staffing levels throughout the decks were very good. Get on early if you haven’t booked a cabin... the seats on all decks get ‘claimed’ quickly (mostly for sleeping) and so you can’t sit anywhere unless you are in the specific dinning area. This meant we used the cabin a lot and was a downside for us as it’s not very social and we’d intended not to do this.
We also brought and used seasickness tablets - I’d highly recommend this. It was a calm day and the ship clearly sways once in the open water, it must be very lively on a rough day. We saw people being sick on the calm day!
Well equiped, but a cabin is a must even if your not planning on sleeping, and come prepared with food and tablets!

We booked at peak season from Melbourne and still found it reasonable to get 3 of us + car to Tasmania. It was quite a relaxing trip other than the busyness of the common areas. Lots of noise and commotion that my earplugs helped mitigate. It was our first time to Tasmania. On the way over we spent time with a tour guide at the travel desk who was very helpful and her tips, recommended maps and books served us well during our 3 week stay. We took our own food for the most part. We did buy a very good quinoa salad that was reasonably priced. If you are prone to sea sickness be sure and take precautions. On our return I could have been more comfortable with a patch on. Loading and unloading vehicles is very well organized and efficient. There is no access to your vehicle when underway. To make the 9 hour + trip more relaxing and peaceful a cabin or recliner might be a good idea. We brought books to read, but there's a game room for the kids and a movie theater for extra fee. We found the Spirit of Tasmania a lovely way to get to and from Tasmania.

Taking the Spirit Of Tasmania ship from Melbourne to Devonport is a great experience. We sailed on the night trip, and booked a cabin, but there are other resting/sleeping arrangements available.
Staff and all are very friendly, and everything runs so cleanly.
We had been told that drinks, food was expensive but this was untrue with a spirit and mixer being only $8.50 and meals also well priced.
The cabin accommodation (single beds) is basic but allows a level of privacy as well as shower/toilet.
You can simply sail there, either renting car etc as required, or as part of a bus tour. We towed a caravan, and this proved a popular means, with a number if like minded travellers also towing.
Whatever the means, SOT allows you to get away, and have fun on this lovely island paradise.

We took our car with us across to Tassie. We live near Port Melbourne so it was an easy option. Boarding took a while but once aboard we had a very pleasant day crossing that passed quickly. We booked a recliner seat and I’m very glad we did. It was well worth the $38. We also went to a movie which passed a couple of hours and at $10 a head was good value. Food on board was really good despite the limited choices due to COVID. I’d happily travel this way again. Disembarkation was very slow and we we’re actually the very last car off but again that’s because of more COVID checks ...

We travelled to and from Devonport on Spirit of Tasmania. Both times we had a porthole cabin for 4 people.
Both times we got email and text updates for the departure times and were able to plan accordingly. The email provided useful details about the ship.
Embarking /disembarking : first in, last out. So if your car ends up on the lower deck, it will take extra 30 - 45 minutes to get out.
The team is very helpful and guiding the cars for easy parking.
Cabin : the cabin was OK. We had a good night sleep both nights (we were lucky that the sea was not rough). Do note that the cabin has only 2 power outlets, so charging several devices requires creativity.
Food : the food of the ship is expensive (12$ for a small pizza) and there is not much variety or choice. We took our food and drinks, that we bought in advance.
Entertainment : not much to do on the ship - there is small playground for little kids and few PlayStations. So if you travelling with children, need alternative entertainment.
Covid: masks are manda on the ship and there are temperature checks when disembarking in Devonport (add extra 30 minutes to your waiting time).
In general, it is not bad way to get to Tasmania with your own car.

Made a booking on the Sunday Night to travel on the Spirit late December,(Tasmania to Mainland) realised on the Monday we had made a mistake and would be unable to get to Sydney in time for a Christmas Function.
We then cancelled the booking on the Wednesday, 63 hours after we made it but we were slugged one third of the cost of our booking fee because you are only allowed to cancel with 48 hours of booking.
We understand and accept a cancellation fee, $50 maybe or higher if it was within 7 days of the actual travel but when the booking you made was 7 weeks out and you cancel within 63 hours there is simply no justification for a cancellation fee of 1/3 of the booking. SOT had incurred no costs and would easily resell the space.
In Summary the fiscal policies of the Spirit of Tasmania management team do not reflect those of the average Australian. Feeling Ripped Off

We were on the Spirit of Tasmania in January 2021.
I was so disappointed when we boarded and the only place that we could sit was on deck seven near the Terrace bar. The whole deck smelt mouldy and musty it was horrendous. I had to go outside several times because the smell made me wanna throw up. Half the deck was under construction and wires and things are pulled out everywhere. It was being renovated and used at the same time which is completely ridiculous and an OH&S issue.
The staff onboard were unfriendly and were more concerned with chatting than doing their jobs. I watch one of the Covid cleaners, clean the same chair over and over again while chatting up a guest. She then announce that she was going on a break to have a hot date. I was unamused!!
The food on board was overpriced and was not even good quality. I ordered breakfast for myself and my two boys we had one quiche and two of the breakfast rolls. The quiche was flavourless and the two rolls had been sitting there so long that they will rock hard. I was absolutely disgusted that you can charger your guest so much for this below average food.
The lack of seating on board for guests to enjoy was a real issue especially when other guests had taken up three or four chairs so they could sleep during the sail and staff did not tell them that they are not allowed to do that as other guest need somewhere to sit!
Some of the handsets in the gaming area did not even work making it a long sail for my children.
On disembark we arrived at our car to find one of the guests hitting it with his door. We politely requested that he stop hitting the car and he was rude and abusive. No staff came to assist as this man confronting a woman and two children which is Appalling. We sat in the car for 40 mins waiting to get off with people running their engines and the fumes becoming overwhelming. The staff did nothing to try and control this situation.
For the price we paid I can’t believe that we had to sit on the deck that was disgusting in the middle of a Pandemic.
It was the longest trip of my life and a terrible end to our holiday!!

We usually arrive at the terminal about 30 minutes before loading stops to ensure we are last on first off - it just makes sense if you want to diembark quickly. For this return trip the 3 of us did 2 night sails in a 4 berth cabin. On the trip to Tassie we ate pizza on level 10 because The Terrace on level 9 was closed. Pizzas are ok but they ran out of chicken pizzas so my advice would be to order early to avoid disappointment. On the return trip we had drinks on level 9 until the bar closed. The trip to Tassie was calm - the trip back had a few bumps but nothing too serious and certainly not enough to disturb your sleep. Pizas You are supposed to wear masks at all times unless eating or drinking but i only saw one person told to put a mask on even though there were quite a few wandering around without masks. There are people assigned to spray and wipe surfaces - perhaps they could advise people to wear their masks. We find it an easy way to get to Tassie with your car and all the gear you need for a good holiday.

Is it worth the extra $ for a cabin with a porthole? I'm wondering if its darker and quieter in the inside cabins anyway?
Written 19 November 2024
You are correct it is quieter and darker in the inside cabins. If you want to sleep suggest the inside cabins. If you are night sailing there is not much to see anyway so pothole kinda wasted. When we want a view we just walk topsides and enjoy the common areas.

Hi Maureen, sorry this is a late reply...hopefully not too late for you.
It has been a while but I'm pretty sure there are lockers on board also if you opt to book a recliner seat, I think they have luggage racks in the private recliner lounge but that will just be a storage area not a secure locker.

Hi, we are travelling to Tasmania in July and due to the very very expensive cost of hiring a car we are looking into sending the car over via the Spirit of Tasmania. I want to know how does it work if we can not be at the ship for pick up at Devonport or Melbourne upon return, can someone else pick it up or do they offer to store it for a few hours until we arrive?
