Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Spent 3 days in Derby cycling Blue Derby MTB trails. Fabulous infrastructure and something for everyone. The town had a friendly vibe with The Hubb providing extremely friendly service and good pizzas, interacted with staff at both the Pub and the general store and was impressed with their friendliness. Only negative vibe was from the lady owner of Vertigo bike store who gave us a lot of grief over one bike being returned a little late one day. Maybe consider renting from one of the other stores? Camped at the free campground along the river which was surprisingly good. People friendly and all there for the same reason. Toilets and showers well maintained. Highly recommend the 43 km Bay of Fires trail from the mountain to the sea. One of the best days of riding I have ever done. We chose to shuttle ourselves which added a few hours of driving to the day but otherwise its $150 per person to get shuttled up to top and then picked up at Bay of Fires. Highly recommed a visit to this town and bike park.

Having done some planning about where to have a MTB trip/holiday, I planned this trip for my teenage son and I. Having just spent the last 5 days here, next time I will bring the family. This place, it’s transformation from what it was, what it has become and what it offers is incredible (google ,ABC Derby landline’ for a good 20 min rundown of its transformation).
Derby cater’s for levels of riding and encourages kids to be outdoors and active. Whilst we stayed in an Air BnB, there was a real sense of community in the camp grounds.
The trails are world class, and cater for all levels. I’d also recommend doing the longer ones such as Blue tier, Atlas and Bay of fires depending on budget and what you are comfortable with.
Although eating (ie dining out) options are limited, that’s not here or there really as there are some in Derby and Branxholm.
All in all an awesome place.

The derby mtb network is extensive. It provides a challenge for all levels of riders from beginners to even the most advanced. Want to take your child for an easy ride, derby has it. Want to strap your full face helmet on and be tested on some steep trails, derby has it. Prefer to pedal four hours on end you can do it at derby, want to get a shuttle so you don't have to climb you guessed it derby has them

This is unlike any where else in Australia..
I have ridden a lot of trails from Queensland to Tasmania..
There are other trails that are equivalent in fun and technical value.. But there is no where else in Australia where the whole town revolves around MTB riding...
The cafes pubs and shops are all there for the riders. Everyone is super friendly.. Our group of 12 used Vertigo Mtb and they are amazing but everyone is there to help you..
No matter what level you are there is something there for you
Must do if you are into Mtbs on any level..
Plenty of hire bikes throughout the town for all levels.
We go once a year now đź‘Ťđź‘Ťđź‘Ťđź‘Ť

Unbelievable flow and gravity trails catering for all levels of riders. Don’t miss Blue Tier, Atlas and Bay of Fires outings either.
Worldtrail (builders) have done an excellent job. World class and ride right from town.

Some of the best trails in Tasmania. Do the Tunnel, the lake as a warm up before Air Ya Garn- the best track of the lot.
Heaps of tracks to explore. Recommend a few climbing tracks before finishing on the shuttles.

Super range of mountain bike trails with something for the whole family. The trails are very well graded and signposted and can be accessed by pedal power or shuttle service.
A fabulous mix of old school cross country tracks (Blue Tier and Atlas) with gravity and enduro trails. Trails are superbly designed and maintained.
Great facilities in town for bike hire, service, shuttles, bike wash and general mountain bike information.

I am a local resident and have been thoroughly enjoying the tracks at Derby! I recently did Atlas and it is a great track!
If I could make a suggestion to tourists however, based on personal experience and general feedback from others in the community, I would not suggest hiring a bike off The Corner Store at the Tin Centre, Derby. The bikes are not well maintained and have been sent out significantly faulty with refund refused. I found management quite aggressive and difficult to deal with, with little bike knowledge. At $80 ($110 inc insurance), it's not a cheap exercise to receive an unsatisfactory bike. It also makes for an unpleasant riding experience.
I personally hired a Giant Trance, which should have been a great bike to ride as per past experiences. I took a car ride to the top of Atlas. At the beginning of my decent I quickly realised my dropper post was faulty. I was unable to set my bike seat at all, so was forced to walk the bike the majority of the track back to Derby. Obviously this took several m hours, so a refund was refused as it was 'not returned within the hour' as specified in terms and conditions.
I alternatively would suggest hiring a bike from Buck Gibson at Vertigo. His number is 0488463448.

A young woman was just confronted by a local regarding her dog off leash. The young woman said, 'if you are worried about your animals, lock them up - I am a tourist.' The large dog then decided to leave a deposit on the side of the footpath!!!! No clean up, no apology!
Derby residents are angry, frustrated and near to breaking point regarding the total lack of respect shown for our town and its residents. Check out the front page of the Advertiser this week when locals confronted the council - who of course abdicated responsibility. There is a petition circulating, numerous complaints and we are begging for bylaws, some type of instant fines, and a request to clean up - we welcome real visitors from everywhere - but the ferals that are here every weekend have to be dealt with.

I’ve ridden classic trails around the world including British Columbia (whistler, north shore, Vancouver island, Squamish), the French alps and rotorua.
This place is as good or better. The blue tier trails are simply amazing. The derby trails are so varied you can have a nice ride or ride world class gnar. The climbing is very doable with climb, rest, climb sorted out perfectly.

Is the derby river derby even going on anymore? Articles I found when searching says that in 2018 it was cancelled due to lack of volunteers..

What time of year would you recommend coming to try out mountain biking leisurely? Is there are particular season to aim for/avoid?
Thanks

Between April and October the days are also shorter in relation to daylight hours.
Avoid Derby River Derby weekend unless you want to also participate in the raft race down the river.
Rocks on the track can be quite icy over winter particularly in the early mornings.
I would suggest week days November/December if less people is your aim.

Are the mtb trails likely to be open during the first 2 weeks of September?
Written 3 April 2017
Blue Tier and Weldborough trails just closed - those around Derby still open - but should be opening again in September. Not sure exact dates - check Blue Derby mountain bike trails on Facebook for updates
