About
Emu Valley Rhododendron Garden is a remarkable private garden built and operated by volunteers in the north-west of Tasmania. The 11-hectare property is located 8km south of Burnie, off the Ridgley Highway and features over 24,000 select rhododendrons and companion plants from around the world, creating a spectacular display of blooms between late August and November, and striking Autumn foliage colours from March to May. The tranquillity of this lush environment can be enjoyed year-round, with three pristine mirror-like lakes and expansive views from our strategically placed pavilions. The birdsong of diverse bird life and encounters with native fauna such as platypus and echidna are another unique aspect. In addition to the hybrid rhododendrons familiar to gardeners, we also conserve many wild species of rhododendrons growing in geographically defined areas of the garden, that reflect the plant's origins - from Asia, across the Himalayas to China, Japan and North America.

    A Day in Burnie
This is a great place. We didn't go at the best time of year, but it was still amazing. We will definitely be back in spring. The volunteers do a wonderful job to have it looking so fabulous all year around. if you are looking for something to do while travelling the north west coast of Tassie go and check it out, it is worth a look.

    Nice stroll in beautiful gardens
This is a beautiful place, just a short bus ride from the cruise port. It’s self guided, with fairly easy inclines that could prove challenging if you’re physically disabled. Watch for the platypus diving around in the pond. The food and coffee in the cafe are good. The staff is accommodating, cheerful and take pride in their products.

    Lovely morning stroll
We visited the Rhododendron Gardens as part of a hoho bus trip. The gardens were well maintained, with different themed areas, gazebos, bridges, lakes and walking tracks. The gardens are maintained by volunteers which is very impressive. These is a cafe that has souvenirs and serves yummy scones and jam.

Lovely walk but wrong season for flowers!
Lovely walk around the gardens, took about an hour or so. Two issues - it was hellishly windy, and it was the wrong season for rhododendrons, so no flowers! Having said that, it was still a lovely walk and the Japanese garden was stunning. There were a few lakes there and we just saw (literally) the tail end of a platypus! Enjoyable - but suggest a visit is timed for flowering season, when I am sure it is spectacular!

We had a lovely morning at the gardens, with one of the local volunteers offering to take us around the expansive site of Rhododendron. More museum than private garden, the beautifully structured and catalogued gardens contain >250 of the world's 500+ rhododendron species, and they are collated by country/region of origin.

In summer for us it offered a tranquil morning away from the cares of the world, with blooms to be found in the undergrowth. In Spring it would offer the most stunning array of flowers at every turn, including in some incredible wisteria tunnels.

The tea rooms have a very very affordable range of options, mostly home made by a dedicated and caring team of volunteers.

The scones are lovely - and some of the local baking is available for purchase and taking home.

We visited the gardens today and were absolutely amazed at the dedication and hard work of all the volunteers. The gardens are just outstanding, the pathways that wind through and around the ponds are easy to navigate. We sat on one of the many seats around the garden to admire the view and watch the platypus at play. We finished the morning off by enjoying the Devonshire tea in the cafe.

Would highly recommend a visit here and at $15.00 per person it's excellent value!

In spring this is an experience not to be missed. The colours and variety of the rhododendrons and azaleas are truly breathtaking. Run by volunteers, these gardens are well maintained and planned and very, very beautiful. There are peaceful spots to sit and take in the amazing range of colours and textures. The cherry blossom was an bonus.
The cafe offered excellent home made soup, as well as scones. A great day out.

As we visited in winter, most of the rhododendrons were only budding. It definitely would've looked more beautiful when they all bloomed. Managed by volunteers, this little gem was located just outside Burnie. With a cafe, shop and toilet facilities, the ladies that were managing the place were friendly and when we visited they were nice enough to lend us umbrellas as it was drizzly.

The gardens were divided into several regions as were the rhododendrons that were endemic to those regions. All species were clearly marked and information provided of their origin. Beautiful garden even in winter, and the plants were well-looked after.

The garden is located in a hilly area so some ascending/descending of the path is to be expected.

We had a fabulous time taking the tour with one of the friendly guides. Plants were in full bloom including cherry blossoms around the lake. Breathtakingly beautiful. We were delighted to find that there were rare varieties of pine including two mature Wollemi Pines. Well worth the trip from Hobart and I gained valuable information about growing Rhododendrums in my own garden.

My partner and I were looking for a picturesque walk and this was beyond perfect. We visited in autumn and would have preferred to see it in spring, but the leaves changing were still very beautiful. We also got very lucky and saw the resident platypus in the lake several times. We did the long walk route and then stopped for scones and tea at the tea room. The place is very cozy and staff are very nice. A very wholesome spot.

I will admit I was not as keen to visit these gardens as my wife was. However, once there and started to look around I was very impressed with the work that the volunteers had achieved. The blaze of colour was something to behold. The gardens are divided into the rhododendrons found in various countries and contain a significant number of the total world number of varieties of this plant. It is a fairly easy walk around the gardens and on our visit we saw two platypus in the lakes within the gardens. The best time to visit is mid September to mid November. Entrance fee for adults is $15.

The flowers were blooming everywhere and it was a feast of colour to the eyes: spectacular gardens, well-signposted with a number of marked circuits to take in the grounds. There is a cafe on-site providing basic fare, plenty of birdlife, supposedly platypus in the ponds (we did not see them) and it provides an uplifting experience.

Well worth the entry price.

We came to see a platypus & that was a success. However, the gardens weren’t great for a walk. There was barely anything in bloom, they were doing a lot of maintenance during opening hours so it was noisy and not peaceful and the paths are confusing and not well marked.

They should consider charging half price during the non blooming season.
