Do it! Go up Porlock Hill and on the way back take the Toll Road. We did it early evening - quiet, great views over the marshes and just great to get off the main A39 for a while.

We went on the toll road thinking it would be maintained. Wrong it was the worst road we have been on full of potholes and so narrow. We we're praying we wouldn't meet a car, nowhere to pull in. Also its nerve racking as it was quite a drop on one side. My husband is an excellent driver as he worked all his life driving. He was so glad to see the end of the toll road. Never again. Also one of the potholes damaged a wheel bearing on the car. My advice is don't use, you will regret it

Having done the A39 Porlock ill a couple of times in both directions we took the toll road as a scenic alternative and were glad we did. As easy drive on the whole with one or two tricky points it gave great alternative views of the bay and the countryside and was worth the fee.

Let's be totally clear here - in the Porlock area there are 2 toll roads. The road leading up from Porlock village, bypassing the A39 is an excellent alternative for caravans, coaches etc. and is a lovely scenic route for everyone with ample stopping places for picnics or just to look at the views. There is a toll booth half way up where someone will take your money or an honesty box if there isn't. The other toll 'road' is the Worthy Toll Road and leads up from Porlock Weir a couple of miles West of Porlock village. It is a disgrace and I would never take any vehicle up or down it unless I was after an insurance claim. It is fit only for walkers and mountain bikes which is ironic since neither of these are allowed on it. Hope that helps A Local

As the clutch in our car has done 154,000 miles we didn’t want to risk it up Porlock Hill. The £3 to use the toll road is well worthwhile just for the views over Porlock Bay.
