The only challenge is trying not to buy a library! Sitting with a coffee to enjoy the overwhelming choice of books is actively encouraged.

We traded in some of our books and enjoyed over two hours browsing the shop. It was very busy in the morning on a rainy day but once the crowds cleared it was a much more pleasant experience. The children's section could be set out over a larger area as this is very popular. My 13 year old son found... More

Even if you're not a reader, Barter Books is a must visit if you're in Alnwick. The building itself is beautiful; it's a restored station with original features and interesting additions. The book shelves are heaving with all sorts - first editions for serious buyers, a wide range of fiction and non-fiction, a lot of local interest and history. The... More

I have to admit that I'd never heard of this world famous book shop before, but we visited as it was a place that my Mum and dad had always wanted to visit when we were exploring Northumberland. I wasn't sure what to expect, but have to say that I was totally taken aback by what we saw, it was... More

I've been to Barter Books many times and always come away with a bag full of weird and wonderful books. The atmosphere is always welcoming and a stop off at the tea rooms a must. Well worth a visit to this converted train station.

Books, books, books, books, books, books books, books, books, books, books, books, books, books books, books, books, books, books, books, books, books books, books. This is a book lovers paradise. One of the largest second hand and aniquitarian bookshops in the UK if not the whole of Europe. The size of this collection is incredible! What's even better is that... More

My first visit and what a fascinating place it is!! Slightly overwhelming at first but broken up with a visit to the buffet cart it was an enjoyable visit! The books are laid out in a strange order but it's great to wonder through the isles. My daughter loves to read and enjoyed the big bean bags in the children's... More

Absolutely fabulous way to spend an hour or so, not just for bookworms this quirky second hand bookshop is so much more! A converted old railway station with many original features. Children and adults alike will be enchanted by the decor. Lots of quiet corners with squishy chairs so you can ponder your book choice at leisure. Some real gems... More
