Our relative is guide for tours around the castle which attracts 30 to 90 visitors a day. Owned and lived in by the archetypal eccentric English Sir Humphrey Wakefield it is full of interesting items and includes dudgeon with iron maiden etc. Was important English...More

After reading some of the other reviews I would sum up that if you have a sense of fun and like something a bit different from the sanitised properties that are usually visited you will enjoy Chillingham Castle. You get the real feel of an...More

I great castle to visit, full of the owners collections of period items. Helpful guide happy to give further information. Lovely formal gardens. Nice tearoom in the castle too.

The driveway leading up to the Castle is awesome and the Castle itself is well worth a visit. We found the castle guides both knowledgable and extremely friendly which all added up to a superb day out. Don’t miss seeing the gardens, which, when we...More

After wanting to go to the famous Chillingham castle for years. I finally got the courage to go. Sadly I didn't experience anything at all supernatural. However I enjoyed my visit. It's really beautiful castle with a lot of disturbing history. I always thought it...More

Really stunning castle which has bundles of character and history. Personally I much prefer this castle to Alnwick or Bamburgh castle. Beautiful extensive grounds, gardens and lakes. Tea room good value but limited choice. The place was falling down when Sir Wakefield bought it and...More

Second visit here and still the richest and eclectic castle visit i have ever done. If you like your castles all modernised, clean and orderly then you are not going to "get this" place. The room notes by Sir Humphrey add a personal touch. The...More

Well I've seen a few dismissive reviews of the castle and think they're extremely unfair. We loved the castle and the fact it's full of the owner's family collectibles. The booklet written by the owner is a nice touch with personal anecdotes. I loved the...More

I can think of nothing more laudable than taking a dilapidated historic building and transforming it into a living family home. But if I wanted to make money for my vanity project by charging considerable admission to the house, and more for the garden, I...More

I wouldn't recommend a visit personally. Much of the castle was up and down steps and think it would be a nightmare personally. A shame as was a brilliant castle. Not sure about the disabled toilet, sorry.
