About
The New Forest National Park is truly unique. It’s a ‘world capital’ for wildlife with a huge diversity of rare plants and animals– one of the reasons why it was made a National Park in 2005. A place of outstanding natural beauty, the unique landscape is shaped by the grazing of ponies, cattle and pigs that roam freely. These animals may appear wild, but they are owned by people called commoners. One of the last places in southern England to offer a sense of wildness and tranquillity, it’s a wonderful area to explore on foot, horseback, or by bike. Indeed William the Conqueror, who set aside the ‘New Forest’ for hunting more than 900 years ago, would probably recognise much of it today.

- NorthStar02013996087Sheffield, United Kingdom26 contributionsA lovely walk to see lots of animalsVisited the Moor near Brockhurst Village. Walked for an hour and saw at least 12 horses grazing peacefully, we were careful not to get too close so as not to disturb them. Then went into Brockhurst village for lunch in a lovely little cafe.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 April 2024
- Paula AMaidstone, United Kingdom298 contributionsBeautiful scenery and rare opportunity to see ponies and donkey roaming free.We took the day to just drive around all the little roads within the park and stopped in Brockenhurst for a walk. The countryside is stunning and it is wonderful to see all the ponies, donkeys and cattle roaming freely. Its a beautiful place to visit.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 2 May 2024
- BluebellplasnewyddCardiff, United Kingdom2,043 contributionsUniqueIt is impossible to sum up the New Forest in a single review. It consists of miles of centuries old dense forest and open areas with dry walks and boggy landscapes. You can drive through to gain a sense of the size or walk on tracks that go on for miles. You will mainly be alone apart from the wildlife but occasionally interrupted by school trekking parties and bikes. If you chose a walk at dusk you will be rewarded by seeing deer and ponies. The towns and villages are quaint with plenty to see and do but get extremely busy in the summer with difficulty parking. Prices fo everything are not cheap! Overall suitable for dropping in if you are in the area or a more prolonged stay.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 May 2024
- Sasha Marie1,977 contributionsA must visit locationThis place has always held a place in my heart. Been here a few times and enjoy it every time. The horses are relatively friendly and some like to come over for a snack or two. The views are stunning and the walks are plentiful. Deer are lovely to see here and the nature is so peaceful. I brought the dog here most recently and he loved every minute of it. Only warning is there are massive horse flies which do bite so spray bug spray or cover up legs when walking in some of the areas. So much to say but will not bore everyone! Highly recommendVisited July 2023Travelled soloWritten 28 June 2024
- worldtraveller77London, United Kingdom86 contributionsNew Forest Tall trees walkWe particularly enjoyed the Tall Trees walk - seeing the tallest redwoods in England and many different pines. There are lots of information boards for children but very useful for adult too. Who knew that rubbing the needles of a Douglas pine gives off an orange scent? Easily accessible for all. Well kept loos at Blackwater car park. There is also a small, fenced arboretum. Sadly the van only does icecream and drinks - no foodVisited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 August 2024
- NKayNorth East England, United Kingdom1,488 contributionsNew Forest reviewWe were staying in a hotel local and woke up early around 5am and decided to get up and go for an early morning drive through the national park. It was absolutely beautiful. We saw lots of the ponies, donkeys and cows and stopped a couple of times to just sit and watch. We spent about two hours around the national park and as time was getting on the more cars were about and a couple were getting cross with our careful driving and zoomed around the horses in the road to get to where they are going, some people just dont appreciate and respect what is around them unfortunately. Beautiful place,Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 18 August 2024
- Laura BNewcastle-under-Lyme, United Kingdom217 contributionsBeautifulAfter watching a programme on television in 2021, I had wanted to come & visit The New Forest for so long and now I have. It did not disappoint, a natural beauty, such a peaceful place, wild animals roaming free. It almost reminds you of going back in time. I would definitely recommend visiting and would love to return myself someday and spend more time there.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 31 August 2024

If this like an animal sanctuary they need to do more for the animals, the kids was a big disappointed not seeing some of the rare animals that was written on the plague. The New Forrest covers a wide area and can be explored on food, cycle or by car. Woods and streams are present as well as common land. It is best to stay there to make the most of it but even a diversion on your car trip to the West Country will enable you to appreciate it. Beware that the roads and towns get very crowded with traffic queues common. You may be lucky to see deer and ponies.

Brokenhurst is a lovely village on the edge of the New Forest and is a great place to stop at for an explore as a day trip. A few lovely pubs and restaurants in the area along with a cafe and convenient stores. From the train station a 10 minute walk will see you into the park surrounded by wild ponies and nature.

Went for a long weekend, hired bikes for a day which I would highly recommend - there is a very good selection of well maintained gravel forest trails which are well marked with pre made route plans available.
The area is very quiet and tranquil outside of the main towns.
I did feel that after 2 days I had seen pretty much everything that was there to be seen.

I highly recommend coming to visit the New Forest because you have everything you desire in short driving disrance. There are plenty of walks, picnic areas, shops, villages, towns, seaside, beaches, woodlands, car parks and a theme park. Fantastic place, will be sad to leave.

We’ve just had a weekend away in the New Forest which was further spiced up with Storm Ciara. With two children Under 10 we spent all of Saturday walking, weather beautiful and the landscape beautiful. Plenty for the children to run free and explore. So much to absorb and breathe in. Everyone we came across was friendly and acknowledging. Felt good to be alive, fresh air, awesome parks, animals and bird spotting to boot. Was a weekend full of lovely memories. Will definitely be back

We chose to holiday in The New Forest when our cruise around the Med was cancelled. It more than made up for our disappointment. Beautiful landscape and peaceful and relaxing. Plenty of wildlife to enjoy everywhere. I see some people complaining about the levels of traffic and places being busy but they forget they are adding to the issue. Just accept the situation and don't overlook enjoying the beauty around you. There are dozens of free small car parks where you can park up and walk for miles. We visited around 10 during our stay across the forest and they were never crowded.

We passed through this gem of a place. I was completely captivated, seeing the ponies, donkeys and cattle roaming freely. We were on the way to and from the Beaulieu Motor Museum as a birthday treat for my partner. I just couldn't get over how beautiful this place was, so tranquil, like going back in time. Because of the time of year that we went, the hustle and bustle wasn't there. I would expect on a warmer day and during the summer this place would get very busy. I think you could spend a while day in this area and still not see everything.

Lots of different walking trails, towns and horses of course.
Go for a wander and see if you can see the wild horses.
Try out some of the cafes, most places have free parking but some of the towns charge a small fee for an hour or so parking.

Written 19 January 2023
Hi
I’m trying to find a town/village in the New Forest that has enough there for a two night stay for a couple. I’m wanting to stay a rural as possible but within walking distance of somewhere with enough pub/restaurant.
Thanks Sam

Have you any suggestions of an inexpensive campsite or a simple place to stay for a couple of nights in the New Forest for a family of 3. We'd love to be close to the free-roaming ponies if possible but don't have any of our own gear for camping so renting a static caravan or equipped tent would be our ideal. Any suggestions, please?
Written 9 July 2020
There's a place in the North of the forrest called Tom's field, tents, caravans, not far from local pub; there'll be loads of other places on Google.

Is Blackwater Arboretum fenced?
Written 28 July 2019
Yes Blackwater Arboretum is fenced to prevent damage to the trees by the wild animals. The public use the gates and can enter the Arboretum at any time. There is a car park on the other side of the road close by.

We are going to Isle of Wight for a week this August and would like to visit the New Forest for a picnic on the way to Lymington ferry terminal. Is it free to enter and are there many picnic benches available?
Written 10 May 2019
Hi Aimie,
I would suggest going to Bolderwood or Blackwater Car Parks as they would give you a real taste of the Forest and have picnic areas and toilet facilities situated in the Forest. They are also not far off the mail route you would travel if going to Lymington ferry terminal.
If you needed to have a quick stop if you had been caught in traffic then stop in Lyndhurst and head to Bolton's Bench. Sadly no picnic benches but there are benches.
The New Forest National Park is free to enter.
