Overview
More
The Secret Forest is a part natural and part man made landscape and has a roundhouse village demonstrating how iron age workers may have lived in three replica roundhouses showing different methods of construction. The landscape walk is through an open former iron age mine system that is open to the sky and known locally as ‘Scowles’; the outcrop of the crease limestone cave system which started forming approximately 180 million years ago. The abandoned mines were taken over by nature and have created a beautiful ancient woodland with trees over 800 years old. The circular path is approx. 600m long within gentle rock and root formations. Our mission is to preserve and promote the appreciation and enjoyment of our natural environment through art, education and nature. We run courses and events. OPEN 10am to 3pm DURING SCHOOL HOLIDAYS AND WEEKENDS and by prior appointment, unless otherwise stated. See website for details. There is a tearoom and eco-toilets. Check before you travel.

We already knew the scowles at Puzzle Wood and were interested in trying this close neighbour. The path is not as exciting as Puzzle Wood, nor as complex but was just right for 4 year olds and their families. Toy bears of all shapes and sizes...More

Although the walk through the forest isn't particularly long it is stunningly beautiful, peaceful and also very interesting especially if you take time to read the information boards about the iron ore mining that went on tens of thousands of years ago. The scowles are...More

We paid £3 per person to go into the secret forest which consisted of a 15 minute walk. An absolute waste of time and money and would definitely not recommend!

We visited on a lovely cold and bright winter's day. Entry cost £10 for our family of four. Our walk through the wooded area was lovely. The scowles are fascinating and it's a very magical and unspoilt setting. We took a picnic and were pleased...More

We went here today and both left feeling utterly devestated for the poor animals. When we got there, there was no one to welcome us, just a box saying to put your money in there for the entry fee. The walk itself is a worse...More

Went with friends today and was appalled by the fact they charging entry into what I can only describe as a rip off.. it's basically a wooded forest that has just been cornered off and the walk around it takes less than 10minutes. The cafe...More

The gradients are challenging to people in wheelchairs and to a lesser degree with pushchairs. However it is possible with some 'oomph'.

The Secret Forest is a separate entity to Clearwell Caves and therefore there is no joint ticket.
