About
Clacton Pier is officially the largest pleasure pier in the UK covering a staggering 6 1/2 acres. First opened in July 1871 as a landing stage for goods it was the first construction in the "new" town of Clacton-on-Sea. The town was initially built as a Holiday Destination for Londoners and with poor road access and no railway the pier was the main gateway for goods, holiday makers and locals alike.By 1922 the pier had fallen into receivership and was bough by Ernest Kingsman a businessman who saw the potential to start developing the wooden structure into an amusement destination. Amongst many other things he was responsible for all of the piers main extensions, including building the swimming pool, at least three theatres, adding the original steel Stella roller coaster and the blue lagoon dance hall. Since the kingsman family sold the pier in 1971 there has been a string of owners with the pier going into steady decline, until March 2009 when it was bought by the newly formed Clacton Pier company who has been investing heavily in the attraction. The pier now boasts a selection of new and refurbished family fun rides, Seaqurium sealife centre, 10 Pin bowling, the boardwalk bar, American diner, loads of eating places, great fish and chips, an activity zone and a function room named....The Kingsman Room................and there's a hell of all more in store so LIKE us on Facebook and visit our website to keep updated.

We have just taken our two Grandchildren to the pier today for a Halloween special wrist band event. Absolutely brilliant we have had a great day. They really deserved our custom as it was all so well organised. Food was all good too. And all the young people running the rides were so good with all of the children strapping them in & checking that they were safe at all times. A lot of money has been spent upgrading the pier and its so worth a visit. Crazy golf was great too.

Lot's to see and do!
Aug. 2021
One of the best piers in the UK, if not the best, in terms of things to see and do. There's a fun fair, huge arcade, crazy golf, aquarium, restaurants, shops and a great beach right next to it.

My only real issue was that the pier itself needs some urgent repairs with a lot of broken planks that need repairing before somebody gets seriously hurt.

Thanks for the four stars Bentley Bear - as well as the positive review which is very much appreciated. We are really glad that you enjoyed your visit and made the most of the many attractions we offer - both indoors and outdoors. The pier has undergone many repairs and improvements recently as part of a multi-million pound investment programme. We can assure you that the boards/planks are checked on a regular basis and are repaired if there is a problem.

Tired
Oct. 2021
Like all British seasides tired and lacking appeal. Would I go back no . What else can I say not a lot not a lot was open but then it was October. To was a nice sunny day but still everything closed personally I wouldn’t waste you time but each to their own you should really go and find out for yourself you might love it

Thanks for your feedback Chris which is appreciated and as you say people will have different opinions. You don't seem to be a fan of British seaside resorts while others love them. Not sure whether your review is about the pier or Clacton as a whole. You are also correct that there will not be as much open in the winter as in the summer - however the pier is open 364 days a year and only closes on Christmas Day. I would just like to say that the pier has undergone a multi-million investment programme - hence it is hard to understand the comment about "tired and lacking appeal." Finally, we totally agree that the best way for anyone to make their mind up is to try the attraction for themselves and - as you say - they might love it.

Half term and closed
Oct. 2021 • Family
The best seaside resorts function whenever there’s a school holiday and in Between times. Unfortunately this half term, whilst there are people willing to spend some money, all the attractions and eateries aren’t operating. I guess they know when they can earn the bucks better than me. But such a disappointment to come to a classic seaside town and he rides on the pier aren’t manned or operational during a school holiday. People packed in the arcade because there’s nothing else around.
During corona with a captive audience of people not going abroad as much and this place is a fragment of past glory. Out of season it may be, but it’s half term for some and a glorious seaside town should be functioning and not closed to tourism. Have money to spend but no where open to spend it 🙃

Hi Jon, we take on board your comments - and you are quite right that half term is one of our prime times for increased footfall. However, half term for Essex schools is this week and therefore that is when all our attractions are open. Last week all attractions were open at weekends but the rides were closed during the week. We do monitor footfall carefully and if we were getting the numbers the week before October half term (Essex dates) you can be sure we would react to that. It is one of the problems that half term dates can vary from area to area and we have to stick to our biggest catchment. It is a shame that you couldn't come this week as we have our popular Halloween festival for 9 days - which includes both weekends.

BRILLIANT! 👏
Sep. 2021 • Family
Play centre was brilliant! And the food 😋, Also enjoyed the crazy golf. We brought the big day out wristband's which were fantastic value for money. Unfortunately a few of the rides wasn't on at the time though so not much choice for the adult's. The indoor arcades were good although a couple kepted faulting on the ticket's but staff were readily available and helpful. Did come across a rather rude member of staff but on the whole the rest were brilliant and polite. Can't wait to go back in October! Really enjoyed my time here.

We look forward to seeing you again in October and we should have the Looping Star Roller Coaster in operation by then. We are sorry it has taken longer than we anticipated to get operational but it is due to factors beyond our control. The Big Day Out wristbands are great value for money. Thanks for the feedback and four star rating which is appreciated.

Disappointing
Sep. 2021 • Family
Visited Clacton Pier in the last week of school holidays with my husband and young child. Usually we find seaside amusements fun but this one was disappointing. The staff were miserable. Not all the buttons were working on the machines but they still took your money with no out of order signs. Quite a few of the rides outside on the pier were not only out of order but looked like dumping grounds and actually quite dangerous if children got hold of the bits and pieces of what I can only assume are redundant rides. We felt the rides were not good value for money and not much for the whole family. The toilets were run down and dirty. There wasn’t much in the way of hand sanitiser considering Covid is still about.

Hi Sarah, sorry to hear about your experience. We do not like to hear that any of our customers go away disappointed. If any buttons were not working on machines we do have staff that you can report this to and it will be sorted out for you. We do have some new rides being completed at the moment but these areas are all fenced off with signs. No one should be able to access these areas - or any areas where ride parts are stored. We do have hand sanitiser stations at various points around the pier, including at the entrance. However, we do thank you for your feedback which is taken seriously and appreciated.

Terrible
Sep. 2021 • Family
We came to clacton pier to take the children to experience the soft play and the rides, the soft play was ok however was not covid friendly, no hand-wash station too many people and children, the staff within the restaurant were miserable and unhelpful especially behind the counter all very young inexperienced. I was surprised that although there was table service we had to carry hot drinks around without trays the amount of children running around I was shocked no accident with scolding. As we then exited the pier security guards had congregated outside lots of people around a group of suspicious men exited a car wrapping things in their clothes entering the pier which the experience was pretty frightening to say the least.
The whole area needs cleaning up. Never will we return.

Hi Sandra, sorry that you had a bad experience on your visit. I can assure that is not what we want. Obviously we cannot control who turns up at the pier entrance in a car but as you say security staff were on hand to deal with any issues. We can only apologise if staff were miserable and unhelpful and that will be passed onto the team leader for the Discovery Bay play area. We have limited the numbers using that area due to Covid but we cannot stop children running around enjoying themselves. Like all businesses we are trying to operate within the challenges of Covid and the problems it throws up. There is a balance to be struck between opening with numbers viable to remain open and what someone perceives to be acceptable may be not to someone else. Thanks for your feedback and we appreciate your comments which are taken seriously.
