- JanC377Basingstoke, United Kingdom322 contributionsInformative and funGreat welcome -although you walk quite a way around the castle to the entrance . We took our 5 year old granddaughter but my husband used the audio guide and relayed lots of interesting ( and sometimes quirky) information to us . It really gives a picture of what life in the Bailey would have been like . The exhibition is small but explains a lot . Well worth a visit especially if you are English heritage members .Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 1 November 2023
- juliaandadam123Ashford, United Kingdom1,893 contributionsWeather permittingThis is an all outdoor castle, so plan carefully when you will visit. The dungeon in particular today had 3 inches of water in it, so don’t let any children go and explore down there unsupervised! An interesting glimpse into history for a few hours and worth pairing up with a trip to nearby Battle Abbey the same day.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 3 March 2024
- sarah pWillesborough, United Kingdom118 contributionsCastle visitLovely castle more to see than we thought bring a packed lunch as no cafe and also no toilets there are public toilets in the car park in the village which are clean. Museum to visit in the village which was the village Jail very interesting and free although check opening times as limited. The castle has an audio guide which is helpful a good day out and worth a visitVisited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 June 2024
- Cora S6 contributionsPevensey and Westham Day OutLovely walk around the castle walls. Easy 5 minute walk from the train station to Pevensey and through to Westham. Had a nice lunch at the Royal Oak in the garden. Then walked round the village to see the Court house and St Mary's Church. Took the dog, he loved it. :)Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 August 2024
- Travelwell_always123England, United Kingdom157 contributionsCastle ruinsWe visited in July 2023, but the options for the time of year do not allow entering before September 2023 for some reason. The castle is great to look at from a historical aspect. Not very big, but an interesting visit all the same. We did not pay the £25 that was being asked to enter the main complex as we did not think it was worth it, but it did not detract from a nice visit. We were passing through, so it made a nice break. Worth a look if you are in the area, but in our opinion, not something to make a special trip for.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 13 August 2024

We visited Pevensey castle today (07/09/20). We are a family of 6 so we paid over £30 for tickets. No discounts..no special offers. Full price tickets..which we had to book in advance and online.
We were disappointed on arrival that the majority of the castle was covered in scaffolding and having work done which we told would be there till December.
The lady at reception was lovely. Told us about the history of the castle. My daughter was excited about exploring the dungeons..cells...anything that involved going up and down steps..especially when the receptionist told us we might find some toads in one. They were all closed off. Gutted.
The houses around the castle were very old fashioned which created a medieval feel. Lovely looking place.
So..advice to people..especially families with young children. Wait till the work is completed before visiting.

Booked on-line (English Heritage members) day before visit, very easy process. Arrived at site and parked in pay & display car park next to site. The grounds are free to enter and you can walk around the extensive outer walls an picnic in the grounds. The ticket gets you into the castle ruins. There was some conservation work taking place, with scaffolding etc, but, this did not detract from the visit. There are two main rooms to go in, one gives a potted history of the site, with timeline from the original Roman settlement to its current state, the second provides details of its role in WW2. Interesting place. Worth a visit.

Pevensey Castle is an English Heritage site so free for members but £7.60 for adult non members. There is a car park just outside but this is managed separately and costs £2.50 per visit. The entrance fee covers the inside of the main castle, but you can access the the rest of this large site within the curtain walls free of charge. To be honest, this would be sufficient for most visitors and I'm not sure the castle entrance fee is worth paying, especially as the bulk of the castle is currently undergoing restoration and is covered with scaffolding (at October 2020). You can visit the small dungeon and the inside of a couple of the remaining towers but other than this there is little to see. That said, our visit overall was enjoyable and worthwhile if you have EH membership.

We had wanted to visit Pevensey Castle for a while, and were very surprised to see the Roman walls relatively intact to say how old they are. We saw the disguised pill-box's where the roman wall was altered slightly for defensive combat during WW2. You can read and immerse yourself in the special exhibitions of Pevensey, from a Roman Fort to a Norman stronghold and WW2 command centre. The children loved the battlements and the dungeon, and interactive exhibits. We liked the fine collection of Trebuchet Balls. English Heritage now run the castle and hold events and re-enactments here. We thought prices were reasonable for public, concessions available and free for EH members. The castle grounds are free and well worth a walk around in their own right. Staff were helpful and friendly, with a shout out to Phillip who has a wealth of information ready to share with inquiring minds. Thank-you, we all enjoyed our visit.

It was ok but there was to much reading and not much action. I am a member of the English Heritage so I got in for free. However, if you are not a member you have to pay £20 which is not worth it. Good information but its just the ruins of a castle. Nice walk with hand sanitizer but not the best ever.

Wow what a place! So much history in one location dating from roman times to the 2nd world war. We knew nothing of Pevensey castle before we arrived, but we were so pleased we went. The lady at the reception was really pleasant & very helpful. She gave our kids an activity pack for them to do on site which they throughly enjoyed. There are two exhibitions, one about the Norman's & the castle though from medieval times to modern day & one about the castles role during the war. We would definitely recommend going to Pevensey castle if you're in the area, as it has a very unique history.

Pevensey castle is a piece of history which is well worth a visit. The castle itself is a ruin and whilst it is interesting, the cost to get in is pricey as it takes an hour at most to see. I happily went in as I have English Heritage membership but wouldn’t pay otherwise.
It’s very nice to walk around the outside of the castle without paying entrance.
Dogs are allowed in and there is a very nice dog friendly pub within a few minutes walk called the Smugglers.

I visited with 2 young children and it was ideal as not too big! They loved being able to explore this small castle, going up and down the steps. There’s a little shop inside the castle part which you will need to pay to visit. But the curtain wall part is free and there’s a little car park right next to the entrance. Inside the paid part you have a well, latrine, obliette, dungeon, cannon balls recovered from the moat, a cannon from Tudor period and you can climb the towers.

The interplay between local geography and the site’s varying significance over time was very well explored. We really enjoyed the audio guide and found it very informative. It also kept our preschooler entertained finding all the points to activate the audio! He also liked the treasure trail, which created some good talking points and would work even better for primary age children.
Paid car parking (not English Heritage) is in Pevensey just outside.

We have recently joined English Heritage so decided to revisit Pevensey Castle. We used to take our children here when they were younger as they loved to explore the ruins. However it has changed over the past 15 years with the addition of displays and WWII exhibitions.

When will the scaffolding be removed from the castle so I can photograph it in all its glory?

It's almost gone. Very sorry but the conservation work is important for the castle and will help to preserve it for many years to come.

Just like to mention that as a local in the Pevensey Castle area someone mentioned there are no toilets ? There are in the car park to the right of the Royal Oak Pub. There's also the Cottage Tea rooms and Priory Ourt Hotel all within a good twenty yards of the castle walls.
Written 3 April 2018
There is also the Royal Oak & Castle Inn right between the Tea Rooms and Priory Court Hotel.
Gladys missed that one...
