Overview
More
Magdalenefjorden is a 10 km long and 5 km wide fjord completely in the northwest of Spitsbergen, Svalbard. The cut in from the west in Albert I Land, 60 km north of Ny-Aalesund. The sides of the fjord is posed by the Reusch peninsula in the north and the Hoel peninsula in the south, which is partially covered in snow. The sides of the fjord are relatively steep, up to 6-700 meters. In the north, Sørgattet starts towards the Reusch peninsula and Danskoya. The area is located in the Northwest Spitsbergen National Park. The fjord is very picturesque. Already in 1839, La Recherche Expedition was here and artists on board painted and drew from Magdalenefjorden. It is among the most visited tourist destinations for cruise traffic in this part of Svalbard. Every year approx. 20,000 people visit the old Dutch and English whalers' graves at Gravneset midway through the fjord's south coast, east of Gullybukta.
