On a cloudy day, you are better avoiding the trip since nothing is visible. There are many trails in this area, lots of shops to buys snacks and a quick bite.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 11 July 2024
- Adventure53843746863Chennai District, India11 contributionsMy best trek everFor intro: nice tough trek, took us around 4 hours down & uphill. We went in July 2024. The weather was pleasant when we reached. We reached a bit late around 12pm. Started trek to the village around 1pm. While going downhill, we were extremely excited as the steps were very steep yet safe due to the grills provided in between along the route. But we had a very thrilling feel if we will be able to make it to the top back in time before sunset. Coz as we kept walking down, it felt like we were not covering enough distance but still needed lot of rest. By the time we reached the village it was 2 pm. We knew it was going to be a hard trek back uphill. So we took some time taking rest, had some water at the village school. Village locals are nice people by nature but don't communicate in Hindi or English, only speak Khasi. Also there is no shop or anything of that sort. We started returning and took rest every 10 mins, and that helped. Took some toll on us but main issue was thirst. We didn't carry enough water with us to reduce load (around 1 Ltr a person should be enough). Climbing up seemed easy once we put on some music on our portable bluetooth speakers (really helpful). In between rest, we enjoyed the beautiful view of the valley behind us and it made our trek worth it. Reached atop around 5pm. The weather here is unpredictable, better carry an umbrella. Might help in rain and against sun as well. We went down in foggy weather, trek uphill under extreme sun exposure, when we reached it was foggy again. Tips: start bit early, avoid unnecessary load, carry sufficient water, take enough rest stops, move in group and never leave anyone behind.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 8 August 2024
- Curious_Yagnamurthy20159464452Shillong, India22 contributionsLaitlum CanyonOne of the most beautiful and eye soothing tourist destination on the top the East Khasi Hill. This is one of the best place I have visited till date. Cannot express by writing how beautiful it is. The view is like a panoramic view of nature leaning on the sky. You will feel it like heaven. You will get an amazing 360 degree view of the canyon. Most of the people do not know that there is a canyon in the north eastern part of India. It is only one hour driving distance from main city Shillong. I will suggest you to visit there if are around.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 August 2024

This is one place which is worth visiting and cant be missed. We went in June and weather was cloudy. The moment we entered the parking, it started raining heavily but we took our raincoats and marched into the canyons.
We walked holding the wooden railing amidst heavy downpour & landed up in an unbelievably beautiful place with greenery all around. We soon realized why Meghalaya is called "Scotland of the east" and "Land of Clouds" - We could live and breathe that feeling.
Kids went crazy running around and throwing away umbrellas to enjoy natural rains and beauty. It was like being with the clouds - walking and feeling them hit your face.
We spent quite a bit there, going till the extreme end and then the clouds disappeared and we could watch the canyons. Although it was not sunny and clear view but the whole experience of being at that place was great.
Would strongly recommend the place if you want to fall in love with nature.

Friends took us to Laitlum from Shillong and the ride was beautiful with villages dotting the green hills. Despite the fog, the view and small walk to the canyon was idyllic.
Parking is found before arriving to the canyon at the cots of a few rupees. Restrooms are available.
A pleasant place to spend an afternoon, with a picnic lunch.

Laitlum Canyon is about an hour's drive south east from Shillong past the Smit and Laitlum Villages. We were very lucky to have a gorgeous, clear, dry day with blue skies in early Nov. The best views of the lush green canyon were available just a short 100m walk straight from the parking lot. Spent an hour clicking pictures from various spots and got great photos. Highly recommended on a clear day.

Laitlum Canyons is a must visit destination on your Meghalaya itinerary. It is approximately 20 kms from Shillong. The place has an amazing landscape of valley, mountains, Grass lands. The place gets foggy during the day and provides an amazing picturesque experience to the visitors.

The Laitlum grand canyons are situated pretty much in the middle of nowhere around 40 kms away from Shillong near the village of Smit. This made us think whether to include it in our itinerary at all. We were initially pondering whether to club it with the next day's plan of Nartiang, Jowai and Shnonpdeng but thankfully did it alongwith rest of Shillong sightseeing. The gorgeous canyon is best viewed after 10-11 am or so as there are no clouds obstructing the views. It's difficult to put the experience in words as one needs to be there to experience it. Please do not miss it at any cost while in Meghalaya

Laitlum was completely cloudy when we went on drop all the way for no view. But most point in meghalaya have to view especially if u are driving to cherrapunjee or dawki.
So in months of summer I don't think one will get a clear view after such a long drive

A beautiful place covered with fogs for the whole time we were there. That gave us a good calming feeling even when we could not see much.
Vast and green and when you walk some 100-200 mts away from the crowd, it’s really peaceful.
But yes the initial part sees a huge, boisterous, littering crowd especially on weekends.

From daphiba cafe whether to move right or left of Laitlum Traveller spot.
Since Google map shows direction on right side if we search 'laitlum canyon' and Google map shows left side direction if we search 'laitlum view point'.
Or else I feel both are different view points and which direction to consider to explore correct tourist spot.
Also km between both spots as per Google map is 20 kilometers
Written 17 April 2020
Thanks Sir. Also one thing adding to your answer, most of videos in youtube or shillong travellers site shows it's 22-30 km from shillong. When we select laitlum view point distance comes to 40 km. This thing forces us to jump to conclusion that correct place is laitlum grand canyon and not laitlum view point as per name shown in Google map

Visiting meghalaya with 11 and 5 yr girls in april 2 nd week,is it right time to visit laitlum caves,is it worth to visit
Written 16 January 2020
Meghalaya is worth visiting in any season, with different attraction each season. Monsoons are known for waterfalls, whereas the best view of Dawki river can be seen in winters. Blossom Festival lits up entire state during spring, whereas summers are also pleasant. Laitlum isn't any cave but a canyon, one can enjoy the view during clear weather or can play in mist during cloudy weather. The vast green landscape is a perfect place for a family picnic.

What time should I go from Mawsyram to reach laitlum canyons for the best view time and can I camp near the canyons
Written 30 September 2019
Start in morning. No option for camping.Trek a little. Good but overhyped. Return by noon.
Written 1 October 2019
No trek required, the car goes till the parking lot just besides the meadows of canyon. Though, you can stroll as much as you can in the vast open area covered with lush green slopes but mind the trenches in between.
Written 17 September 2019
Camping should be possible at laitlum if we carry all the camping stuff for a night?
Written 10 May 2019
Guess u need to take permission from local village. Should be possible. But since Khasi village is titled as the cleanest village, they may not allow to ruin the beauty of nature by allowing ppl to set up camps. If ppl wanna do camping, they need to maintain the cleanliness.
