Beautiful location, but unfortunately the service was awful. The lady who served us never once introduced herself or let us know about the local wine they offered. Thankfully they had lawn games or this would have been an even worse experience.
1 Star for the location. 1 Star for the games.

I just wrote a review for a poor experience in another Vale winery, and realised I compared them unfavourably to Dowie Doole more than once, so I thought I ought to drop by here and say the same, in reverse. :)

A voucher deal where we weren't subjected to the feeling of being less valuable than any other customer, short changed on the produce, or rushed out of the joint. The platter was delicious (those cheeses....oh dear, I'm not even supposed to eat cheese....) the manager was charming, gregarious and generous spirited, and the measures were liberal. Oh, and their sparkling Shiraz is a wine I WILL be going back for.

If I could move VH road another mile away I would, but other than that it was a great, golden relaxing way to spend a cpuple of hours, and despite the fact that it was way past 'closing' time, they were still welcoming anyone who came in.

Its a tought spot to find, but I think you can do way worse in McLaren Vale.

Last week, on a weekday, my partner and I went to Dowie Doole as we had purchased a wine tasting, cheese platter voucher. We were recommended to go by my mum and aunt who had visited a few months before. We were taken through a tasting of their white and red wines and particularly enjoyed the 2013 Chenin Blanc and the 2010 Cali Road Reserve Shiraz. The wine was reasonably priced, and the shiraz a particular stand out for $32 a bottle. The owner was very knowledgeable, but not intimidating and even gave us a taste of the yet unbottled new vintage which still had to have the lees (dead yeast, I'm told) removed from it. The voucher I bought for $40 included the tasting, a cheese platter, two glasses of wine and a bottle of wine to take home. Although the cheese platter wasn't large, it included four really good cheeses, local almonds and olives and we enjoyed it sitting on the veranda overlooking vines and gumtrees. Overall, a really good experience and we will return.

My first time in Dowie Doole was not a great experience at all. My parents came overseas from Asia and we went to have a drive in Mclaren Vale and came across this winery then did a wine tasting there. There was only one guy serving there and he was not at all friendly. We waited waited for 5 min before we get served and when we finished our first glass of wine tasting, this guy was just trying to avoid eye contact and was so busy serving others on the table. we were actually waiting there for 10 min before our second glass was served. Then, again, waited for such a long time before our third glasses..It was actually a bit awkward because we were just stand there waiting and doing nothing. Maybe he thought that we were not gonna buy anything or dont understand wine at all as we may look like tourists. But I actually did wine tasting certificate and I was looking to buy wines. I really had enough of this unfriendly service and we just left. I think I will not come back there in the future, their wine is really not superb anyway. Then, we went to Foggo wines and we had a great experiences, then maximus wines, they also was great, we ended up buying many bottles from them. So was not a too bad day in the end.

Whilst on my road trip through the SA wineries I asked the staff at the wineries for recommendations as to which cellar doors to visit. Jon from My McLaren Vale tours suggested Dowie Doole winery, which I had not heard of before. The new cellar door has only been open a week and it is spectacular. The modern and ecological use of containers and solar panels is brilliant. The cellar door is surrounded by the rolling hills of the vineyard to create a beautiful environment. The wines were also brilliant and the staff very knowledgeable about the wines and the aging/maturation process. Highly recommend before every learns about the new cellar door being open.

A wonderful wine tasting session hosted by the lovely Tabatha who explained the differences between the different vintages and the history of the vineyard.

Along with amazing wines this place has relax down to a tee...

I don't have kids but they are kid friendly and plenty of space for them to run around and for parents to chill or play a game of Bocce.

Is always on my list of winers to visit when in the Vale.

The last winery of the day but the most relaxing. Peter was a great host. We played bocce on the well manicured lawn and was a lot of fun. The wine was different to most and enjoyed by all of us. The surrounds were attractive and away from the other wineries in the Mclaren Vale Region.

Cellar door host was very accommodating and friendly, nice wine and cute cellar door. Would be fabulous in spring as it looked a little unkept on the drive in…
