Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

The Wilpena Pound and surrounding scenery itself is amazing. We stayed at the resort very overrated, the whole resort is very run down and is needing a major overhaul. We paid well over $1000 for 4 nights and was very disappointed, hardly any cooking utensils, pot, pans etc in kitchenette, small bar fridge, over all cleanliness of the room was not good. We had food still stuck on the plates and cooking utensils we had to clean off. Floor were dirty, no house keeping done during our stay. Rooms are very old and rundown. Driving around the resort when we arrived all the bins were over flowing and animals had got into the rubbish. Near the restaurant there was a massive pile of rubbish, old wood and general rubbish just on the side of the road. It looked terrible for visitors to see when they arrived. The pool was green and didn’t look like it had been used for ages. The grounds of the resort looked like it hadn’t been attended to for months. Even the information centre and IGA all looked rundown and needing some attention. I wouldn’t recommend anyone to stay at the resort, not sure how they call it a resort. If we were to come again it will be for the walking trails and the scenery we would camp in the camping ground and bring all our stuff with us.

We stayed here 9 years ago but our recent stay last week the resort has greatly deteriorated and badly in need of refurbishment and staff training in hospitality.

We arrived to a room with no hot water they moved us to the Heyson room and advised will Not be charged for larger room. We went from a room with separate seating area, proper sized fridge (not tiny bar fridge) & even ice tray to none of these.

It is a long stretch to call this resort when only amenity was a pool and over prized restaurant with limited food offering.

The St Mary's Peak Trail gives you unparalleled views of the Pound and is a good workout for fit people. For the less fit, it could be a struggle. We scaled the outside wall first and finished via the inside track - 18km in total. Take enough water, a walking stick would be good, too. And the final bit of the outside track up to the Saddle is quite strenuous - you need good mobility. Worth the effort though. Start off in the morning!!

Ikara is simply one of the best national parks one in South Australia. We joined a tour this time and immensely benefited from the rich knowledge passing down to us. I still learned something new even this is my 5th visit in the space of 15 years.
Such an honour way to learn how Adnyamathanha People have lived, experienced and moving forward.
I would strongly recommend international visitors to spend at least 4-5 days to explore different sites in Wilpena pound.
Understand camping is not everyone’s cup of tea, staying in Wilpena Pound Resort has got everything sorted.

We visited Wilpena Pound twice during our tour of the Flinders Ranges; once was just not enough! And we would love to return to experience more of this magnificent and pristine area of historical, cultural and geological significance. The biodiversity is astonishing (we arrived following heavy rains in the area).
A few things to mention:

1. The cultural tour with Mick McKenzie was a highlight. Mick gave our group so much information in a short time, we learned a great deal from him. His walk and talk tour is highly recommended (I am sure other guides also do a fine job too.) Thank you, Mick!
2. The walks/hikes: very well planned and signed, with interesting information along the way, and some pleasant rest stops too. There are walks for all levels of difficulty, and the views are splendid.
3. Access, parking, picnic spots, information, general store (coffee!!), fuel, wifi and mobile phone coverage, tick!
4. Very good arrangements for sanitizing and social distancing in this time of Covid, allowing visitors to benefit from this great experience.

When we return to the Flinders, we'll choose to stay at Wilpena Pound.

The man in the Visitor Centre was patience itself. He cheerfully repeated the directions on how to walk into Wilpena Pound to a steady stream of dumbo tourists. His directions were very helpful and the walk is highly recommended.

Waling into Wilpena Pound, we enjoyed the quiet surroundings and the lovely scents from the native bush. The walk in was a reasonable distance, but a Toyota bus is available for those who cannot walk far. We climbed up to the two lookouts and really enjoyed the views

We had the unfortunate experience of staying here just before New Years - whilst the surroundings are amazing - the resort has a lot of room for improvement. The worst feature was the jumbo jet engine noise every time we turned on the light in in the family bathroom. Cleaning was also not high on their agenda nor serving quality food at the restaurant- we would not ever stay here again

We loved our visits to Wilpena pound. We did several of the walks over the course of a week and thoroughly enjoyed each one of them. Excellent signposts keep you on the right path. My Ohlssen Bagge is a challenge but so very worth it ( give yourself 4 hours to do it) . Rewards yourself with a treat at the IGA store in the visitor centre after your hike. The staff there are awesome. So very friendly and welcoming. Wilpena Pound and the whole National Park is simply breathtaking.

I have been wanting to do this place for ages. So perhaps my expectations were higher than they should have been. Or perhaps I need to do a scenic flight as someone else suggested to feel the full grandeur of the pound.
I am glad I’ve done it but it just wasn’t as spectacular as I thought it would be. I reached the top and simply went oh is that it, rather than wow. I’m normally a wow person to most things.
I did the Wangarra lookouts only today. And it’s forecast rain tomorrow so I think that will be Wilpena pound done for me. The bus wasn’t running as there was no driver.
They say allow 3hrs return and it was pretty accurate. If you can, keep going up past the lower lookout to the top lookout.
Most of the walk is through bushland so it’s pretty shaded. It’s a pretty walk with interesting information boards, particularly the ladies stories. After Hills Homestead you ascend to the lookouts and there are some nice rock face views as you go up. It was nice to have a snack with the whole place to myself later in the afternoon.
