About
Come and explore the three separate areas that make up Murray River National Park. Katarapko, Lyrup Flats and Bulyong Island cover more than 13,000 hectares and conserve the verdant Murray wetlands that flow through the park. The Katarapko area features floodplains and several wetlands. The area is an important breeding area for native wildlife, including waterbirds, and is an ideal place for birdwatching. Lyrup Flats encompasses 2,000 hectares along the floodplain on the northern side of the river and provides wonderful opportunities for birdwatching and fishing. You can take your dog for a walk in the Lyrup Flats area of the park providing it is on a lead. Bulyong Island is only accessible by boat. The island is home to a number of wildlife species, such as the western grey kangaroos, emus, pelicans, kingfishers and parrots.

We did a half-day visit to the top section of the Katarapko Katfish Reach part of the Murray River NP. There are dozens of camping sites along the shore which afford lovely views of the river. We were able to picnic near one of them near the Booky Cliffs - most interesting section of the river. An enjoyable day out.

Stayed at the Lyrup Flats section of the park, just to the east of Berri, for a couple of nights in our camper.

Sites need to be booked online - plenty of space, located right on the river bank and generally good separation from other campers. There are toilet facilities across the park, but dependent on the site you book, it could be a longish walk.

Quiet, relaxing and very pleasant watching the the river flow by, the birdlife and occasional river traffic.

My partner and I rode here on our mountain bikes and explored the area. It's very pretty with lots of lovely camp sites however there's a lot of rubbish and upon entering the park there's a homeless tent set up on the river bank with about 4-5 not so friendly dogs all chained up around the camp site barking in a not so friendly way. We scooted the long way around them but I wouldn't want one to break free from its chain as I think they would probably tear you apart.

Berri is at the northern end of the Murray River National Park,
The Katarapko section.
The park is one of the Riverland’s most popular park for camping, fishing and kayaking.
A perfect place to rest and relax.

Easy to find, as there is lots of signage. The campsites are great - clearly marked and good access to the river.
Great for a place to relax, but fishing wasn’t the best.

A great National Park setting on Katarapko Creek - part of the River Murray with camp sites on the rivers edge. Great for family, fishers or bird watchers. Just out of Berri with easily defined camp sites. Make sure you book before arriving but a great experience

Katarapko Creek is just so peaceful. All the campsites are spread along the creek so you're not camping right next to someone else. We're locals and our favourite campsite is only 20 minutes drive from Berri.
We like paddling on Katarapko creek rather than the river because it's not as wide and you don't have speed boats whizzing past. If you don't have your own kayaks there's kayak hire in Berri and they deliver out to your campsite.
It's our favourite place to get away for weekend and relax around a campfire (bring your own wood) - campfires allowed during non fire-ban season.

Just off the Sturt Highway between Barmera and Waikerie is a lazy undiscovered stretch of The Murray at Wigley Flat.
You can go for miles either up or downstream without another boat in view for days. Lots of spectacular cliffs, beaches and river gums with the occasional historic cottage on the river front.

What a find..with an array of camp sites along the river with shady secluded settings to park your van or pitch a tent. Watch the height with bigger vans as low hanging trees in sine locations. Great place for kayaking and fishing and in the warmer months to catch a feed of Yabbies. Beautiful country!
