About
The Roma Saleyards are the largest cattle selling centre in Australia, with over 400,000 cattle passing through a year. Enjoy the NEW state-of-the-art interpretive centre telling the story of the cattle industry. As you enter the Interpretive Centre, you could be forgiven for thinking you'd joined a cattle drive on the long paddock. The curved entrance comes to live The Roma Saleyards Interpretive Centre is open every day, including weekends, between 8am and 5pm. On Tuesdays from 8am until 11am, retired cattlemen volunteer their time to answer visitors’ questions about the saleyards and, more broadly, the cattle industry. Store Sales operate every Tuesday and although visitors are currently not permitted entry to Store Sales, the sound of sale proceedings can be heard.

- AllyM295Canberra, Australia196 contributionsA must do while in RomaWe visited on a Tuesday - sale day and it was excellent. We went through the centre first and it showcases the history. When you first walk in you feel like you are in a the middle of a paddock watching the day to day work going on around you. We then joined our tour guides Alan and Lloyd who were very informative and passionate about the sale yards and the beef industry. As you went out and watched the auctions they explained what was happening and also how the cattle arrive and pass through the auction process etc. All in all a very enjoyable morning at the Sale Yards.Visited February 2023Written 14 February 2023

Being city folk we found the saleyards tour fascinating. Free tour. Tour guide (retired cattleman) was informative and knowledgeable. The sights sounds and smells were incredible.

Thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The information Centre was informative and covered historical aspects of the development of the stockyard. The tour of the yard, was great, watching the auctioneer live was interesting, Seeing the cattle moved through the pens, being weighed and sorted was amazing, Had no idea how thorough the process was and how the cattle are analysed through microchipped ear tag.

Will they open during the new year? 5 Jan 2021?

Can not answer when the first sale for 2021 will be held. The viewing pavillion at the saleyards is open every day and gives you a rich history via surround film which I found really interesting. Due to COVID-19 there are restrictions on where you can go in the actual saleyards if there is a sale on.
The Roma information centre will be able to answer any questions you may have.

Are tours offered any day of the week. Looks likely to arrive on a Wednesday in Roma .. any chance of a tour? Some info states Tues and Thurs only.
Anything else to see or do in Roma?

The member above summed up the sale yards beautifully, I would suggest a tour of the Big Rig and as this is the tourist info centre it is a must visit, Railway Dam is perfect if you have time for a picnic if not a leisurely stroll around it on the pathway would be lovely especially at sunset
What days are sale days?

Hi Jacqueline
From memory it's Tuesday and Thursdays in the 'winter ' which I think is approx March- Sept. I hear that the Tuesday's are bigger than the Thursday's. They said they like at least 6000 head to make the auction worthwhile (otherwise there's not enough buyers). I think there's more info on the website. My only other tip is to wear shoes you don't mind a bit of mud on, but even better, go on a day that there's been no rain for several preceding days- then you can go 'down' on the ground with the stock, AND up above them on the viewing area.
