TOTAL RIP OFF
Aug. 2021
There was no lunch. All we got was an ice cream. When asked about no lunch the
owner was arrogant and rude. The price was still the same without lunch. It was a total rip off and cannot recommend it to any one. The tour itself was minimal. all we did was stand outside a shade house and no real feel about wandering around a plantation. The whole purpose of the tour was to sell their chocolate produce with no consideration for the public. TOTAL RIP OFF. Not even a partial refund>

Ernie, we are sorry you did not enjoy your tour at Charley’s. We have been serving a light lunch consisting of a “basic but tasty burger” to quote some of the reviews for some 6 years. This was done in partnership with the Mission Beach Lions Club who used this as a fundraiser. Recently the local council forbade continuation of this. As we believe passionately in providing our guests with as local an experience as possible we partnered with award wining Mungalli Creek Biodamic Dairy to feature their newly launched icecream. Immediately this was in place, reference to lunch was removed from our booking website and replaced with the following: To finish off the morning and your tour, we feature Mungalli's Broken Nose Vanilla Ice Cream. Made with Biodynamic milk, cream and Australian grown vanilla from Broken Nose Vanilla near Mount Bartle Frere (highest mountain in Queensland). All this was explained to you when you raised it. Moreover, as you booked your tour online just a day earlier when this information was clearly shown you would have had this information available. If you did not choose to read this we can not be responsible as we can only provide clear, honest and accurate information, we cannot make you read it. The light lunch burger had a value of around $5 in terms of the price charged for a similar size item in other establishments. (McDonalds charge anywhere from $2 for a basic burger to $6.40 for a Big Mac.) The Mungalli Creek icecream has a recommended retail price of $4.50 We therefore feel we are providing a genuine value alternative. As for “the tour being minimal” I’m not sure how you could come to this conclusion. A quick read of the hundreds of other reviews shows the tour being anything but minimal. Finally, like most organizations we have zero tolerance for abuse by guests or visitors, so your approach in verbalising your complaint using four letter words is not acceptable. If you found our response arrogant and rude, you may consider in future using a less aggressive approach.

Clearly not as advertised
Aug. 2021
The tour and detailed explanation of how raw cocoa beans are grown and become the finished chocolate product could not be faulted and the chocolate tasting delicious HOWEVER, we were led to believe that our tour price included a BBQ burger lunch as advertised on the brochure I booked from and indeed on Trip Advisor. This was also the expectation of the other 3 couples at our table who had all booked through various other portals. This was NOT the case, in fact when someone enquired about it we were told that lunches had ceased a month ago. As I booked direct with the owner, I would have thought that this would have been made clear at the time of booking. A small boutique vanilla ice cream was given but no lunch. I also was under the impression that I would be paying the “ senior card holder” price of $ 29 per head as advertised on the brochure only to discover that I had been charged $34 per head. Of the 4 couples seated at our table ( all of the same age group), 3 different prices had been charges - all above the brochure price list and no lunch.. Now I understand that prices do rise and circumstances change BUT the onus is on the owners to ensure that all outdated advertising material be amended or removed from shelves and to make sure that customers are informed of any changes until such corrections can be made. Quite frankly this has left me feeling a little ripped off. Incidentally, it was interesting that the comment papers were passed around BEFORE we were advised that no lunch was forthcoming. Sadly, I have to say that my experience was disappointing. I hope the owners will act quickly to amend this glaring false advertising.

Hi, Kerrie Thank you for your feedback. We do try and make sure brochures out there are current and that all portals have the correct information. Given that we now know where the old brochure was we can rectify that and are trying to update all portals.

Best chocolate ever!

Fabulous tour. Learnt quite a lot of how cocoa beans are grown. The hosts certainly demonstrated their passion for what they do and were very informative and considering it is in this beautiful land of ours was a bonus. Walked out after few hours with a very full belly, so much chocolate tastings and hamburgers! Recommend this tour to anyone.

Chocolate Heaven

Tasting delicious different types of chocolate was the highlight at the end of the tour. However, learning about how the cocoa nut has been grown in Mission Beach and the incredible journey that the couple (who are the owners, growers and makers) have been through to create the delicious chocolate was fantastic! And the burger lunch was great too!

Charley's is the best.
Visited Charley's Chocolate Factory and did the tour and bbq lunch. My wife is a Choco fan and she loved it. I don't do chocolate but it was still a really interesting experience for both of us. Learnt a lot about cocoa bean growing from absolute scratch. Nice small group so everyone was involved. My wife loved the chocolate. Would recommend this one to anyone of any age. Interesting and good fun.

Charley’s Chocolate Factory
We were very keen to visit this place after we saw their chocolates at a store in Mission Beach.

The tour was very informative with a great lesson to how they make their chocolate as well as a history lesson which we did not expect on the origins of chocolate. It’s the only place in Australia where they grow the cocoa bean, so that was so cool to know!

The tour also takes you through the orchard, you can sample the chocolates, you get a basic lunch and you can buy some chocolates at the end. It’s a good place to visit!

Chocolate Tour & Farm Lunch
Charley’s is a hidden gem in Mission Beach and I strongly recommend seeking it out and joining a tour. I booked in for the Sunday morning tour for $34 (there are only 2 tours per week on a Thursday and Sunday at 10.30am, book in advance) and it was fantastic. The tour lasts for around 2 hours and includes the following:

· Introduction to the world of chocolate including the history of chocolate, how and where it is produced in the world and interesting facts and figures. There is even a quiz for the kids to do.

· A tour through the cacao/cocoa tree orchard where you see the cocoa pods and learn how the cocoa is grown and harvested, and a look at the chocolate factory (from the outside) where the chocolate is made.

· A lengthy tasting where you can try various blends of chocolate that are made on the premises including – Davidson Plum, Karkar Island (PNG cocoa), Lemon Myrtle, Chili, and many other flavours

· A cooked lunch is included, being a juicy hamburger cooked in front of you on the BBQ

· Opportunity to buy chocolate and ask questions at the end

I highly recommended a visit to Charley’s – it is a great local business and the chocolate is amazing.

We loved our tour with Charlie’s Chocolate factory. The tour was informative, engaging and very generous with their tastings. I learned a lot about chocolate beyond it tastes great! The owners conduct the tour so it’s genuine and gracious. We had the additional bonus of a wild cassowary roaming by!! Thanks for a great tour and the lunch was delicious too❤️
