The Obi Obi boardwalk is fantasticFor spotting the elusive platypus. We set off around 5pm from the boardwalk on Maple st opposite Woolworths. The wall is around 1.5kms. Just keep walking Past the huge Fig Tree until you reach the viewing area. It's a lovely walk with stunning sunset.

Within mins we saw numerous platypus playing in the creek below. Bring binoculars because you are quite far up from the water especially if they are on the other side of the bank. Look at the wall of the bank as that's where they usually burrow. Look out for big round ripples. I think this is the guaranteed sighting spot Dusk and dawn. A lovely local we spoke to said she has never not seen a platypus on her daily walks yet.

This morning at around 6am we went platypus spotting again. This time we went to the start of the obi obi walk located inside Maleny showgrounds (drive all the way to the end). Around 100 mtrs from the bridge, we spotted a platypus immediately. It's easy to spot once you know what to look for. The water here is very shallow and you can walk down close to edge. We only saw one platypus but it was in clear view resurfacing multiple times. The rest of the walk to Maple st is easy and nice but too much reeds in water to see platypus. We didn't see any more on our walk but likely they have gone back to their burrow.

Be patient. There are plenty of platypuses in the Obi Obi creek. Amazing!

Very close to town but feels very serene. We went looking for platypus in the desperate hope of getting a glimpse....unfortunately we didn’t spot any but we did enjoy the peacefulness. Everyone that walked past us was extremely friendly. This place just brings out the best in people. Would recommend it for a quiet picnic or like us....an opportunity to try to visualise that elusive platypus.

An awesome place to spot platypuses.

We first saw a female platypus at 2.30pm at the viewing station. When standing on the platform, we searched along the banks which is where we saw one swimming around. They are so small and so our binoculars were very handy to see them coming down the creek. They like to feed off the reeds and dip up and down.

On our return back to town, we spotted 3 more on the board walk outside of the Italian restaurant. A large male was swimming up and down the creek searching for females. We were lucky enough to see part of the courting right on the boardwalk when a couple of females came out.

Absolutely amazing set-up to see such rare animals!

I'd recommend bringing binoculars, a camera and some snacks while you wait for them to come out.

I recently had an overnight stay in Maleny as I was hoping to see a platypus. The boardwalk was quite pleasant, but a little confusing. If you start from the Showgrounds, it runs alongside the creek behind where the camping area is. It runs towards town, but pops out onto the road well before you get to the park, then starts again across the road down near the post office but from here it is more of a broad pathway than a boardwalk.

Apparently you can potentially see platypus anywhere along the creek, but there were three main areas where they seem to be easier to find. One is at the main viewing platform, one is at the little platform on Coral St, and the other is from the road bridge hear the Showgrounds.

I was lucky enough to see platypus at all three locations, but then I got extra-lucky and met the Platypus Whisperer (look him up on Facebook). He runs tours, and takes beautiful photos, and is very knowledgeable. He was very generous with his time and knowledge, so I imagine his tours would be very interesting.

The walk is OK but really quite boring. The boardwalk is part of the decking of commercial properties and the creek is quite grubby. The walk follows a bland concrete path with numerous rocks with signs along the way.

Mind you the walk is a good way to take a pause from Maleny which is now little more than a large car park with shops at either side of the car park. Just way too many cars and one inches one's way through Maleny in a que of traffic.

Don't get me wrong, we enjoyed the Obi Boardwalk, but I really don't think it's worth a 4 1/2 star rating.

You really need to keep an eye open for the signs and if you aren't paying attention you're gonna drive straight past it as we did.

When we found it it was a lovely pleasant walk, but overall it was a little average.
Go see for yourself, it doesn't take much time out of your day.

Dawn and dusk are the best times to see this incredible creature. They are very shy and we were lucky enough to see one in the wild. The walk is peaceful and interesting so a delight on it's own. Some interesting sculptures along the way by local artists. Not a long walk either and easy going. Disabled access is good.

It was a bit cold an drizzle, but a nice short easy walk. A little hard to find also. Apparently others have seen platypus but we were not so lucky. Obviously well used by locals and tourists which is good to see.

We did the full circuit, around the golf course, just over 7km. Was an awesome walk, you have open areas then shaded by huge trees. Some of the path is concreted, some road, some dirt. We did see a little brown snake around 2 feet long on the eastern side just before exciting the scrub.

A pretty walk through replanted native rainforest along the week. Part of the walk is boardwalk, partially paved. Information boards along the way. The suggested 1-2 hours is very misleading. My husband and I strolled through here in 15 minutes including reading all the information boards and taking photos. There is a bench midway for stopping to look for platypus. None seen on our trip.
