The original Kuranda Scenic Railway is a spectacular journey comprising unsurpassed views of World Heritage Listed rainforest, steep ravines and picuresque waterfalls within the Barron Gorge National Park. This famous railway winds its way from Cairns to Kuranda, the village in the rainforest. Constructed between 1882 and 1891 it is considered an engineering feat of tremendous magnitude. Hundreds of men were employed to build the 15 hand-made tunnels and 37 bridges that stand as a monument to the pioneers of tropical North Queensland

We booked a full day tour through our hotel with Relax Tours that started with the Kuranda scenic railway followed by 3+ hours in Kuranda village itself and ended with another spectacular ride down on the Skyrail. The train ride up is beautiful. The train engine is wonderfully painted and decorated. The carriages were comfortable but I'd hate to be... More

Hi Steve, Thank you for sharing such a detailed account of your Kuranda Scenic Railway journey! We're fond of the beautifully decorated engine - it's representative of Buda-dji, the Dreamtime carpet snake responsible for the Barron River (among others). We're glad to hear you were able to take advantage of the complimentary cooling towels - they can come in handy... More

This two hour train ride from Cairns goes up the mountain to Kuranda. There were beautiful views along the way. Best part was the train stopping at a great viewpoint for us all to get out and take some photos. There was an interesting audio commentary, but unfortunately it was a little difficult to hear.

My wife and I with our 15 year old grandson boarded the train in Cairns at the downtown station and rode it all the way up in the hills to the town of Kuranda, following the tracks which were put down beginning in 1887 to become a reliable supply route for miners in the gold fields. It's a fun experience which... Being something of a train buff I looked forward to this but came away disappointed. There is bench seating with two benches facing each another and we were crammed in, 4 people stuffed onto one bench and rubbing knees with the people facing us. Considering how hot and humid it was (and there is no aircon and no breeze unless... More

This is s nice outing with views of some nice tall waterfalls and views over the city of Cairns. And Kuranda is s nice destination. The old railroad cars are somewhat interesting and appealing. The star for most is probably the rainforest. Overall nice but not particularly special to me.

My experience is based on being seated in Gold class so my judgement will take into account the luxuries this specialty afforded. But if you're more interested in soaking in Cairns' sweeping mountains and forests and learning about the arduous task of building this collosal railway , this can be achieved in any area of the train. In fact, the... More
