About
We specialise in local Aboriginal Rainforest Art as well as artwork from indigenous Central Australian artists. Aboriginal culture did not have a written language, instead their laws, stories and social behaviour was passed on in the form of song, dance and drawings.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Great aboriginal art gallery with a very helpful staff member who helped us to select a beautiful piece by Malla.
After exploring Kuranda to source an Aboriginal art piece to remind us of our trip, we found that the markets were inauthentic. Doongal seemed like the best of our options.
My only criticism is that Kuranda needs an Aboriginal-owned gallery and shop. Otherwise, we would also have liked more information on the percentage of the sale that the artist receives. Despite asking directly, I was given half an answer which didn't fill me with confidence. I would have appreciated a more honest approach if there's nothing to hide.

There are a number of options in Kuranda when it comes to looking at / buying Aboriginal art and we thought the Doongal gallery was easily the best. It is a large gallery that features works from local artists as well as from the NT desert communities. The works on display are well organised with details provided on the individual artists. The gallery is very easy to spot from the main street - it takes the form of a ship, including with anchor and bowsprit.

Came here looking for something with frogs and there was so many choices. The prices were reasonable and attached to the artwork was information about the artist and the meaning behind the work, very happy with my selection.

We visited this gallery, but found paintings to be way overpriced. The gallery seemed to be owned / run by an arab and I could see very little money getting back to the artists themselves.
Many of the works, seemed to be very expensive for the actual work that would have been put into them. (our 3 yr old some could have done just as good a job)
My recommendation would be to talk to the Aboriginal people at Kuranda and ask them where you can get some of their arty. (At least you will know the money will go to the Artist or community)

Plethora of beauty, numerous artists. I later learned of a downtown gallery, but this was a find after arriving on the SkyRail.

While visiting Kuranda, we were so happy to find this wonderful resource for Aboriginal art. We were shopping for a didgeridoo and found a large selection here. With the help of the very knowledgeable lady working there, we found the exact didge we wanted. She also arranged to have it shipped home to the US for a very reasonable fee. It arrived in perfect condition just a week later. The gallery also had a very large selection of paintings
to choose from.

Kuranda – it is a very hippy little village populated probably half and half between last chance trendies and the Djabugay Aboriginal people. It is extremely reliant on tourism and there are three separate markets all set up in the town and two large hotels – Australian hotels don’t always have accommodation, it is their name for large pubs!
Many of the shops sell exactly the same thing as their neighbour so it is a wonder how any of the small businesses survive but they clearly do. There is however a massive dinosaur shop, with the largest dinosaur skeleton in Australia – so great for curious kids and all palaeontologists. The best thing for us, was the indigenous art galleries – far more interesting than any others. The hours of work and love that must go into some of the pieces of work we saw was astounding. The best gallery was one that had been designed to look like a ship called The Doongal Gallery. We wandered in and spent at least half an hour in there - if only we didn't need to fly home, we would have bought something . They do ship stuff overseas but for us the cost would be prohibitive. The staff were lovely though and at least we got to look around

The Art Gallery is on the side of the street opposite the market stalls on Coondoo, about mid-way along this main street. I was drawn to the large number of didgeridoos on display outside the shop. Although they were all the same length, the painted on decor on each differed. Prices were attached so you didn't need to ask the staff. The walls inside also had many samples of aboriginal art on display so visitors had much choice about the sizes, the colors (mainly earth tones), and subjects (abstract to animals). These canvasses were not framed; probably stapled onto a mounting board. A couch offered a place to linger and staff did not hover. Open doors at the entrance welcomed in shoppers. A good place to look at authentic aboriginal artwork, but it's a shop, not an art gallery.

There were two groups of junior school children here when we visited. One group were sitting on the ground, quietly drawing and a young man was inspirng the other group. It was a treat to see and hear. We browsed the exhibits and works by an Aboriginal man called Malla really caught our attention. It was a lovely visit, even though we could not afford to purchase anything.
