About
Home to the largest single collection of free flying birds in Australia (some 500 of them!), Birdworld Kuranda in the Australian highlands of the Atherton Tablelands displays no less than 75 species of the most spectacular birds from all corners of the planet - as well as from the earth’s fast diminishing rainforests.Visitors are free to wander through the lush, tropically landscaped bird sanctuary to observe the birds in their own specific - yet natural - habitats. Two lakes connected by a tumbling waterfall for example are home to waterbirds such as stilts, herons and Australia’s own unique Black Swan. In Birdworld's rainforest canopy overhead, blue, gold and scarlet Macaws dazzle with colourful brilliance as they soar above the tree tops. One outstanding Birdworld denizen not to be missed is that rare avian giant, the Cassowary - an Australian bird now officially enlisted as endangered.Designed to "create a centre where birds would be showcased in their natural environment without the barriers of cages coming between them and their admiring public", Birdworld Kuranda is a photographer's paradise. (And without those barriers, visitors often find a feathered friend nestling on their shoulder - a golden photo opportunity!) Birdworld Kuranda can provide guided tours for all group bookings.

Very upsetting to see the cramped conditions for the birds. When we saw the cassowary in such a small enclosure looking depressed, just sitting in the dirt, my daughter cried. Not a sanctuary but a horrible money making tourist trap. Owners, please don’t insult our intelligence by replying that the birds are ‘looked after’ etc. You should be ashamed.

This is very touristy and not what we expected. Not many of the birds were Australian, yet alone local to the area. Indian ring necked parrots flocked for food sitting on heads, necks and shoulders making good photo opportunities - however we were concerned about so many people spreading human disease to these birds. The cassowary needed a much larger area to roam and looked rather sad.
Not the place to visit if you are a real bird lover.

It was so good, honestly didn’t expect much and loved every minute, the birds are amazing, I have never had an experience like it, will go again 💯
Make sure you buy the bird food when you enter and go as early as possible, you can hand feed the birds they come to you!

It was a lot of fun and the birds got up close - kids loved it and would recommend a visit. A lot of opportunities with photos with the birds I had like 4 on me at one stage.

We took the train up to Kuranda and it was a nice walk from the station to birdworld. My husband is a big bird lover and was very happy to be able to persuade a couple of them to stick with him for most of the walk through the aviary. At one point, he had three birds of the same species on him-one of which said hello over and over again. I got some great pictures of him and his new friends. Our visit was relatively short but pleasant. They also found the color of my baseball cap attractive apparently..a new experience to have a bird land on my head.

I love animals but I've never had a chance to interact with birds before and to be honest I wasn't expecting much from Kuranda Birdworld - maybe a nice way to fill some time looking at pretty creatures. So it was a wonderful surprise to step into the aviary and discover that we were sharing space with the exhibits - not just looking at them through cage bars.

Better still, I had purchased a little brown paper bag of seed/nuts at the ticket counter, and the moment the birds saw that bag, I had several instant best friends. Parrots of all varieties took turns to land on my shoulders, my head, my forearms, they were hanging upside down off my handbag... one climbed under my arm for a cuddle as I was leaning on a fence railing! And they were almost all perfectly gentle and well-behaved - although sometimes a bit pushy in pursuit of an almond! This experience was so charming, we went back again the following day and it was equally fun the second time.

What you need to know:

1) The aviary is large and tall so the birds can fly freely, and consists of an easy-to-access main covered feeding area, above a winding paved path that snakes around down the side of a hill and back to the top again. In the middle there are a series of filtered ponds for the ducks and other water birds. The aviary is landscaped with lots of trees and shrubs, so the birds have got plenty of spots to perch and nest. The uphill walking is not too challenging and there are hand-rails along the way. If you're enjoying the visit, you'll probably stroll around the track a few times to see all the different varieties of birds.

2) There is a bit of cover here and there in case of rain, but not a huge amount.

3) The aviary is clean and very well maintained and the animals are happy, healthy and sassy. We observed staff regularly cleaning to keep things fresh, and the staff were also lovely and open to talking about the birds and the aviary itself.

4) Some of the parrots will decide they like the look of you and just fly from wherever they are to land on your shoulder or head - it doesn't hurt but if the idea of this scares you (eeek! it's in my hair!), then this experience is perhaps not for you.

5) We arrived well before midday on both of our visits and there were still bags of bird-food available to purchase at the ticket counter. People who arrived some time after us missed out as the supply of bird food ran out. Note - It's not the end of the world if you don't get the bird food - but you certainly receive more attention from the feathered beakies if you do have some!

6) We noticed that many of the birds were reluctant to interact with the kids who were dashing about and being excitable. If you want your kids to have a great experience, see if you can get them to stand still and speak quietly, or at least move slowly and patiently.

7) The larger parrots can get a bit pushy with you (I had one force his head and entire upper body into the bag of bird food when I was too slow pulling some out), but it's not a good idea to get pushy with them. If you try to pat them, or move in a way that startles them, they may give you a nip. They don't draw blood or anything, but you know, full disclosure.

Anyway, we absolutely loved Kuranda Birdworld - it was the highlight of our entire trip to QLD and considering what we spent on other activities only to receive far less satisfaction, I have to say the birds offer magnificent value for money!

Thanks so much for the great deal of time you've taken to express your experience so eloquently. Interestingly, we have only a few days ago spent 4 hours in a major new bird attraction in Asia. It was very impressive, but as you so enthusiastically say, it doesn't have this level of personal interaction with the birds and that is the charm of our product. Very much appreciate your comments. Yes indeed the best way to get that level of engagement with younger children is to get them to be calm and stay relatively still. All animals are wary of fast or sudden movements, that's just a natural survival instinct for them. And we just love your comment about value for money. Some visitors don't appreciate your incredibly time consuming and costly it is, to maintain an exhibit of this kind to such a high standard and we really appreciate it when someone does. You are a rare bird indeed.

Self guided stroll inside a magnificent Aviary containing various species of Macaws, Parrots and Parakeets. Also finches and smaller species.

Opportunities to hand feed and interact with the birds, having them voluntarily sit on your head, hands or arms.

Very highly recommended

The park is full of beautiful, tropical gardens and many different birds. The open-aviary enables an up-close experience with the animals, however can be overwhelming with birds swooping past frequently. Definitely worth a visit, combined with the other parks if you’re in the area.

Many thanks for your thoughtful remarks. We'd rather people be overwhelmed with birds than disappointed due to lack of their presence.

A hidden gem that is suitable for all. Fair price for the experience of free flying birds in an environment filled with water features, trees and other colours that keep your head turning. An amazing variety of parrots, water birds and others including natives. Make sure you pay $3 for a bag of food that is sure to attract flying friends to your arms and shoulders if you are patient. Would be a challenge in a wheelchair, however, the main feeding area is well accessible for all. Well worth it and something unique to remember, happy to recommend.
