Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A lovely lagoon, unfortunately there had been a crocodile sighting there recently so we couldn't walk in too far.

WARNING
Do not follow google maps, follow the signs!

We arrived at Keatings Lagoon at Sunset, armed with repellant, tele lense and patience.

The walk to the bird hide was easy, though uneventful and not very interesting. Open water lillies scattered along the path, paperbark lined waters and a quaint timber bridge led you to a bird hide mid lagoon.

The structure is basic with one side providung a high bench seat.

The lillies fill the lagoon at tje views of bird life at sunset, very quiet indeed. A few pygmy geese, a few whistling duck at a stork. That was it!

Advercated at the Information centre, google and Cooktown advertising as a bird watchers delight...... Its an exageration.

Maybe, sunset might yeild better photographic results???

This lagoon is well protected due to the pig exlusion fence around it. The lagoon boasts dozens of species of birds, including the comb-crested jacana/jesus bird/lotusbird. With a superb boardwalk and track, it's worth at least a quick stop!

I have visited the lagoon several times and have always been impressed with the amount of bird life. The lagoon is located minutes from town and has easy access. Well worth a visit.

Just a few km out of Cooktown down Mulligan Highway, I would call this a hidden gem despite its close proximity to the highway.

A lovely walk of 700-800m along a well marked trail takes you along the lagoon and provides access to the viewing areas: thus walk is through a lovely forested area.

The lagoon itself is quite spectacular in terms of water plants and some amazing bird life. Go early in the day if you can.

Highly recommended: a highlight of our 5 days in Cooktown amongst many great sites and attractions.

This iconic lagoon has a bird hide and depending on the season many different water birds are available to be seen. I particularly like the geese that frequent this area and also the fabulous water lilies. Just don’t touch the foliage or the green ants will be up your arm like a shot.

Visited twice and was rewarded with some good birding - strangely enough - in the mud pool on the way in. Great place for aquatic birds like Jacanas and ducks - but also drongoes, fantails etc on the walk along the periphery. Quite quiet - no need to worry about the timing of your visit to avoid others.

Beware of the mozzies in the early evening though!

A tranquil little reserve just out of town that has a nice walk around the Lagoon - I imagine at certain times of year it would be teaming with wildlife and plentiful water supple - a bit dry in August I should say.

Starting the day with a refreshing walk after breakfast sets up the day.
A pleasant walk to the viewing platform, unfortunately there wasn't a lot of action on the lagoon, just the ducks feeding and the water lilies.
