Grassy Hill offers a 360 degree view of Cooktown, the Endeavour River and the Great Barrier Reef. Although now quite heavily forested, Grassy Hill is so known because local aboriginals deliberately burnt the forest on the hill to encourage re-growth of vegetation and draw animals to the area for hunting. The landscape you see today from the top of the hill has changed little since Captain James Cook and the crew of the HMB Endeavour climbed Grassy Hill in 1770 to view the surrounding reefs enabling him to navigate a safe passage. The views today, especially at sunset and sunrise, are still as spectacular as in 1770 making Grassy Hill one of Cooktown's most popular attractions.

A trip to Cooktown would not be complete without a trip to the local lookout- Grassy Hill. Some informative historical plaques give details of the links to Cook's early voyages. The views go on forever!

Hard to beat this view, easy to get to. The day I visited there were no other visitors making it wonderful to linger and enjoy the fresh sea breeze with the spectacular panorama.

Beautiful 360 degree view of Cooktown and Coral Sea. Bring your coffee, sit and enjoy the view! Kids (7 & 9) were entertained taking photos and admiring scenery.

There are several stops on the way to the top of Grassy Hill. Stop at each of them to take in views over Cooktown and the Endeavour River to finally take in the ocean views.

The grassy hill lookout provides outstanding panoramic views over Cooktown and District and there is a beautiful lighthouse at the peak.

You can feel of Captain Cook surveying the landscape and Seascape. Fantastic views of Cooktown itself, and out to sea.
