Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This review is for the cafe at the gardens. The staff are very unfriendly. When ordering my meal I asked if I could have a take away coffee instead of in a mug I was snapped at and told this will be an extra 50 cents the woman serving didn’t even look up at me when ordering. No seats to sit to eat and when the meal was ready I collected it and awaited my coffee I had ordered with the meal and asked about it the woman stated that she had bussed ages ago I replied that the buzzer was handed in when I got my meal she reluctantly made another for me.
Terrible customer service wouldn’t recommend eating here. The gardens are stunning so save yourself the grief and eat elsewhere and come and enjoy the gardens.

I’m sure the Botanical Gardens are nice. When we arrived in Cooktown after a 4 hour drive from Cairns, we just wanted to sit down for a coffee. We were advised this was one of the better places in town. We arrived at 1.50pm. I was aware they closed at 2pm. Before we had time to speak, the lady behind the counter announced , “The cook has to go, you can have an ice cream and a cool drink.’ Now, I’m sure it doesn’t need a cook to make a cup of coffee with maybe a cake, which was in a display cabinet right there. We can take a hint… we weren’t welcome there. So left.

Botanical gardens had amazing plants as you might expect. Great place for a slow walk or a picnic. Also has a FABULOUS cafe with unexpected offerings for a remote location. We had a melt in your mouth frittata with an imaginative salad rather than a few bits of lettuce with tomato. Came back the next day for lunch again. Option to walk to finch bay

Cooktown has some amazing views to see, great walks to undertake and lovely people to meet - top of my things to do list would be the Botanical Gardens. Beautifully look after with an amazing rang of plants and wild life to review. At the heart of the gardens is a really lovely Art Gallery (full of beautiful art work carried out by local artists) and a Fabbie Cafe, I'd highly recommend the balcony over looking the gardens - a top spot to enjoy coffee, tea, breaks, lunch and so much more.
On my visit I had the pleasure of meeting Amy, I heard her on the phone before she introduced herself, helping a visiter to the area - I was truly impressed. Great smile and very welcoming, proud of her work place and a great representative of Cooktown people. Thank you Honey for you support and great work.

Cooktown is a splendidly romantic and isolated town, and the Botanic Gardens is one of its must-see attractions. Revived in 1985 after many decades of neglect, it is now a beautifully maintained tropical garden with a palmetum, orchidarium, cut flower garden and beautiful tropical hardwoods. From the back gate, you can continue onwards to Finch Bay, which is an isolated beach on the Coral Sea. Entrance is free.

Buy a book on trees in the shop and enjoy identifying them as you walk round. Fascinating display of trees and flora, but bit too hot for me to stay longer than 2 hours

I have been lucky enough to visit Botanical Gardens all over the world. This one is not world-class, but it is very peaceful and rewarding. It gives a good presentation of Tropical Queensland's trees and shrubs and is worth taking the walk from town.
