- Anthony RTownsville, Australia64 contributionsGood view of the area.Good spot to see the town and surrounding areas below. Sheltered tables made it a good spot for afternoon tea. A good map showing the different areas that can be seen. Good road and nice walkways. - Darrel P5 contributionsA View of the WorldExcellent views of Charters Towers and the surroundings. Historic WW2 bunkers to explore and a timid community of Rock Wallabies in residence. There’s a video presentation just after dark in the amphitheater on top of the hill. Covers history and characters of the early days. Need to book for the presentation at the visitor information centre.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 September 2024

The lookout and amphitheatre are well placed especially in the late afternoon. Spotted a few locals, Rock Wallaby's and birds of prey soaring on thermal up draughts. My interest were the WWII munition bunkers. Two near the lower carpark has video displays.

This is a fascinating insight in to the history of Charters Towers. There is a very good board walk leading up to the lookout which is handicap accessible. There are interpretive boards giving the history of the area including the days of the discovery of gold, the pyrite works and on to the World War 11 bunkers. We were there during the day so missed the ghost movie in the amphitheatre. The view over the city and surrounding area gives a great overlook.

You can drive up but you would miss part of the experience. There is ample parking at the bottom for vehicles of all sizes. The path is new, smooth concrete. The trip to the top is only one kilometre but it is quite steep. Halfway up there are ammunition bunkers. One has a B25 bomber run simulation. The other has audio stories of Charters Towers during the war.
At the top of the hill is an excellent viewing platform. There is also some excellent interpretation on easy to read boards. In the evening there is an open air movie presentation. I didn’t see it.
There are side walks to a mine and the old pyrites factory.
There is a free app that reputedly gives a virtual reality experience. I could not make it work.

Locals told us that this was worth a visit so we extended our stay here and so glad we did. The history of this was utterly fascinating. The views are incredible. I had no idea that this was so Central to our defences in WWII. They have videos and all of the old war bunkers. The site of the old chimney was really cool. This is a must do here and you do need a couple of hours.

Firstly, to get there dont use Google Maps. If you're on a different side of the hill than the entrance Google takes you up random Telecom service roads!!
Once you're there, such a great location. The best bunker display I've seen anywhere. Beautiful display at the top and if you can't manage the walk up the hill, try and walk down and have someone else bring back the car! The information boards on the path are great.

On the hill above Charters Towers you will find a lookout & historical ruins to explore. You get a bird's eye view of Charters Towers and great for the sunsets. Down a small track there are ruins of old, fallen battery chimney stacks (dating back to the days when the town was known for its gold mining), knocked down during WW2. There are also 40 odd WW2 bunkers dotted along the hill with a couple having interesting audio visual displays. The d road is sealed to make access to the site easy. Also around dusk and dawn watch out for the Rock Wallabies, quite a few about.

We walked all the way from the base because we had extra time, but you can drive up there to the different lookouts. Highly informative and great for the oldies but I wanted to leave an honest review in that it is nowhere near as spectacular as other lookouts in the region.
There are toilets up there and lots of information boards

Hi LadySpot10,
I would strongly suggest that you do not take your caravan up onto Tower Hill. We took our campertrailer and there is only limited parking and very little room to turn around. There is parking at the base and a sign saying caravans are not to be taken up the quite steep road. With respect to the dog I can see no reason you could not take it. The walkway to the top is quite steep but in excellent condition. They have really developed the site and the WW2 bunkers have been fitted out with audio visual displays. Overall a great place to visit.

We are towing a caravan and have a small dog with us. Is it feasible for us to visit this site?
Written 9 March 2019
No it's not sorry. There isn't a big enough turning circle for you and the parking is limited at the top. Sorry for the late reply, currently in Canberra ACT
