About
Australia’s favourite BIG THING (in our opinion anyway!) is also the home of Bowen's accredited Visitor Information Centre! Situated on the A1 Bruce Hwy with sweeping views of the Whitsunday coast it’s the perfect pull over during the epic East Coast Australian Roadtrip. Get your selfie then pop into the accredited Information Centre on site for all the info on our great state of Queensland. Grab an icy cold mango sorbet and learn about Bowen, the wonderful Whitsunday region, book a Whitsunday experience, grab a map, guide book, have a chat and a cuppa! Happy Travels!

The lady at the Visitor Centre was most helpful and very friendly, it was a nice experience. We came a way with a clear idea to plan our next few days and we are excited to investigate the area.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 June 2024
- TrekStarsMelbourne, Australia203 contributionsIconic stop on the Bruce HwyThis is a great place to stop when driving to the Whitsundays. It's located right on the Bruce Hwy so is an easy detour. It's fun to take photos with the big Mango and the tourist info centre is well worth a visit. There are a plethora of pamphlets, free tea/coffee, souvenirs for sale, as well as toilets. YOu can also buy a $6 cup of mango sorbet. Delicious! The info centre staff were very friendly and helpful! This would be 5* if there was a playground for the kids to burn off some energy after a long drive.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 2 July 2024

It’s a mango, it’s big, it’s in Bowen & it’s iconic, so of course I had to stop. Who hasn’t heard of Bowen mangoes? It’s a thing. I had stopped here late at night years ago on a road trip from Brisbane to Townsville but seeing it in the day was completely different. It’s worth a stop but you can’t go inside & one you’ve seen it and taken a few photos the experience is essentially over. There is a visitor information centre here for those keen to understand what Bowen has to offer. But it’s an iconic “big” thing on the tourist trail so it’s worth ticking off as people will ask you if about it if you came to Bowen.

We stopped for an appropriately touristy photo with the mango and it is indeed big. We went into the visitor centre to use the toilets and had our ear talked off by a very enthusiastic volunteer for about 20 minutes, which would have been great if we weren't busting for the loo. Make sure you grab some mango sorbet while you are here.

Stopped in at Bowen on my way to Townsville and stopped at the Big Mango. Lots of Merchandise, local products and tourism information. I purchase a Big Mango room spray and it smells delicious.

The mango sorbet may be sweet, but the staff certainly weren't quite as much. We stopped in to grab a mandatory travel magnet and try the mango sorbet. Whilst we were there we thought we should ask some questions related to the local area and the what might be options of things to do. The staff weren't really keen on answering these questions and basically said when you get to the areas a little further up just ask there. First time the information center wasn't the best place to get information.

Great little information centre. Just a quick stop on the Bowen highway. The staff were cheerful and helpful. We loved the frozen mango and the view is pretty great too.

This was disappointing to say the least. After visiting big pineapple, big banana, etc etc I did expect more! Really it's just a information centre with a big mango out the front.

As part of my stay in Bowen, visiting the BIG MANGO was a must. The structure depicts a 10-meter high Kensington Pride Mango, also known as the "Bowen Mango". The first Mangos came from trading ships from India in the second half of the 19th Century. A more in-depth history can be read on the plaque on the Big Mango itself.
Right next to the Mango, is the Bowen Visitor Information Centre. There you can get any information on anything that is going on and around Bowen, Proserpine and Airlie Beach. The "must have" guide would be the "Bowen and Collinsville Guide and Holiday Planner". It's a life safer when you don't know the area. It features a very good map on the back page and list's all possible info one may need to know - from accommodation, rental car places, eat out, shopping or having a massage or your hair cut - all info is listed in this comprehensive guide. Just ask the very friendly and helpful people at the centre - they will give you quality information on anything. While there, you can shop for souveniers, book a day trip or have some delicious Mango Sorbet. 10 out of 10 for friendly helpfulness.

Great to check out an icon, and the info centre is full of friendly staff who give great advice and guidance. Mango sorbet is available in the centre, and they also sell a load of souvenirs and food products (chutneys, sauces, etc.) We were glad we stopped!
