Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Wonderful place to visit after being on the road for some time.
Beautiful shady grassed areas near water, perfect for a picnic and rest.
The exhibits will take you back in time, take in as many as you choose.. informative and well set out.

We tend to forget that the working conditions we now enjoy and take for granted we’re hard won over many years by men and women who organised themselves into unions and negotiated with employers for fair pay and conditions.

This museum reminds us of the sometimes confrontational and violent journey to the present day. Well worth a visit regardless of your politics, to see well curated and thoughtful displays covering many aspects and perspectives of past generations as they advanced the working conditions of ordinary people.

This is well worth a visit. Allow at least 90 mins. Beautifully maintained and so clean. The presentation is clear and easy to read and the property very easy to get around. Well done

The last time we were in Barcaldine they were in the process of constructing this Centre. The entry, on an adult concession card, is $17.00 which may seem steep until you see what it provides! [The cafe was inoperative due to staff shortages]. I happily spent 90 minutes going to nearly all of the 15 permanent structures that surround the artesian bore and billabong in the centre of the landscaped grounds. It's hard to pick on one outstanding display, there were so many of them but the AWU Shearers' Hall and the Labour House only narrowly beat the Australia Post, One Teacher School and Health Workers. It was all magnificently arranged, with self-explanatory notes where appropriate and inter-active invitations to explore further. It was, for me, a highlight of our stay in Barcaldine.

This place is quite amazing. The buildings are fabulous, from the outside. Sadly, they are not so good inside. The information boards are excellent but there are many audio presentations that simply don’t work. The tent which is the major centre piece is a complete let down. I was thrilled to see the Youngun, the clone of the tree of knowledge.

This is an interesting stop, a lot more than the info on teh shears strike, with a range of displays from a number of industries and services. Each is provided in its own building/space, generally with a lot of historical information.

This Barcaldine asset is well presented on a paved circuit attractively enhanced with native plantings. Featuring a police watch house, shearer’s’ hall, bicentennial theatre, AWU hall, Labor house, one-teacher school, powerhouse, working women’s display, main roads exhibition, and railway exhibition, one gets a concise history of workers in times past.

The history of the 1861 shearer’s strike, a watershed event in the history of Australian workers and a catalyst for the formation of the Australian Labor Party, is explained concisely and objectively.

The attractive outdoor museum area surrounds an artesian bore and billabong around which there are picnic tables, sheltered areas, toilets and a children’s playground.

The staff at the reception are helpful.

The gift shop has quality items.

$17 for a Senior’s ticket is well worth the price.

Fascinating history of workers rights. Also a beautiful area to relax by the cool of the lagoon, trees picnic area and play set for kids. The clone of the original tree of knowledge the “young un” is here. Also a lovely gift shop. Highly recommends

Entry via the new foyer and shop. The cafe is currently closed so get your coffee from Ridgee Didge cafe before you go through. Staff on site were very helpful, they had plenty of insight and information on the displays.
The large ten is having a refurb at present, so just a tad disappointing to not to see it in full swing.

All of the other displays and activities are housed in various ex government buildings and have a lot of information and photographs. The central billabong is ideal to stop at and feed the fake ducks, or feed yourself. All in all a pleasant way to spend the day.

Must visit this incredible display of Australian history while visiting Barcaldine. There is so much to see so ensure you allow plenty of time to wander the grounds and buildings taking in the array of displays .
