Hasties Swamp, not far out of Atherton, is home to one of the best bird-hides I have ever seen. I visited late afternoon one day and liked it so much came back at dawn the next morning. The hide has two levels and provides excellent views across and up and down the swamp. Heaps of water birds to be seen. Bring binoculars but there is also plenty going on immediately in front of and either side of the hide. Lots of ducks including both Plumed and Wandering whistling ducks, egrets, coots, cormorants, a few spoonbills and a single pelican. At least one Forest Kingfisher too. If you like birds, you're sure to like Hasties Swamp.

If you love birdwatching, especially wetland water birds, you will love Hastie’s Swamp National Park. Even if you notice the signs, and take an unplanned detour like I did, you will love it, or find it interesting. There is a huge variety of birds that come here and you will see a few of these at any given time. There is an elevated bird watching tower which you enter after climbing some stairs, and from here you get a great view of the wetland swamp where the water birds congregate as well as interpretive signage describing the birds of the area in detail. Hastie’s Swamp is just a few kms outside of Atherton, and well worth a visit.

We have visited Hasties three times over the last decade. Each visit is different. Depending on the time of year there are many species or lots of individuals of one. Always interesting. The hide is well set up, comfortable, and easy to observe or photograph from. There are also restrooms.

Stepping out of the car, before taking the boardwalk to the birdhide, the whistling of the ducks is almost deafening (nice though). Hasties swamp had the largest number of birds I have seen there on our yearly visit to the Tablelands. The two-storey birdhide provides excellent views for part of the swamp which really is a lake at present. Hundreds of Magpie Geese and Whistling Ducks, with only a few Pacific Ducks, White Ibis, Egrets, Herons and Swamphens seen by us. The lower part of the birdhide is also wheelchair accessible.

I visited on a dull, drizzly day. It was worth it. The water's edge was ringed by long rows of ducks, 3 or 4 abreast. They photographed brilliantly. Entered the bird hide ( 2 levels) but Didn,t see any birds in flight or landing. However driving back the km or so to the made road many water fowl were entering and leaving the long grasses on the road's edge. They were quite shy but some were happy to let us watch there activity. Lovely natural environment.

I visited Hastie's Swamp twice recently and was astounded at the prolific number of birds most of whom were at rest on this site. I saw literally hundreds of Whistling Ducks and Magpie Geese and many Pink-eared ducks, some Freckled Ducks, Swamp Harriers, Cormorants, Egrets, Pelicans, a Pacific Heron and Australasian Grebes. We experienced light rain but were snug in the bird hide which has two levels making photography easier. Some of the Pink-eared ducks and Whistling ducks were active, but many seemed to be gathering strength in massed groups.

My wife and I have visited Hasties Swamp NP several times over the years and it never fail as to impress. There always seems to be water present event during the driest periods, such as they are currently. The 2 story hide must be one of the best I’ve ever visited.
100's of birds present, huge numbers of Plumbed Whistling Duck, lesser numbers of Wandering. Australian Swamphen abundant, an excellent selection of Egrets & Ibis and a Buff-banded Rail feeding directly below our location. One could easily spend a day here. Just outside the entrance at the junction to the main highway a mixed group of c60 Brolga & Sarus Cranes, c50 Red-tailed Black Cockatoo and 100+ Sulphur-crested Cockatoo

Any birder will know about Hastie's Swamp. Anyone will find a visit interesting. First of all are the birds, of course (binoculars helpful). In addition, there is the ecological history which reflects in a nutshell what has happened on the Atherton Tablelands since Europeans arrived.

The birdhide is the super deluxe.
