Recognised as one of Australia's most unusual attractions, this world class...

Recognised as one of Australia's most unusual attractions, this world class natural history museum gives visitors a very exciting glimpse at what happened millions of years ago beneath our earth's crust. Rene Boissevain is a man with a passion. He has spent a lifetime travelling to every corner of the world to collect crystallised mineral specimens, gemstones, fossils and rocks. He searches only for the best - the most perfect, the most extraordinary, the most valuable, the rarest and the biggest. To house his growing collection of more than 600 individual pieces, Rene has built 250 m2 of tunnels and grottos for you to explore. Visitors are given a helmet and a catalogue to identify the specimens and explore the caves unguided. This virtual cave gives the feeling of finding these natural formations yourself. Carefully positioned and delicately lit, you are free to discover in your own time and encouraged to touch and photograph the crystals. Open your mind and put all expectations aside, this is not your average museum...

Highly recommend going to The Crystal Caves at Atherton. As locals you get locals discount when going into the cave. We all enjoyed walking through the cave to view all the precious gems that have been collected from all over the world. Very interesting for all of us. The gift shop was great as well.

Highly recommend the crystal caves for everyone! We went for a trip out of interest and the caves are amazing. There has been so much effort out into the construction and maintenance and it is fantastic that you can get up close and personal with the exhibits and touch and feel. Incredible experience and the store has a wide range... More

Thank you for your enthusiastic review Chelsea. Being able to touch is what makes our museum so unique. I'm glad you managed with the pram, I know it is a bit tight here and there but then we are trying to give that unique caving experience! More

The staff at the Crystal Caves are so incredibly helpful and friendly. In particular the young man on the ticketing counter who then also served us in the shop. You are an absolute credit to the establishment. We throughly enjoyed making our way through the tunnels looking around at all the specimens with our head lamps. The largest amethyst geode... More

Thank you so much for your lovely review. We have several young men that work here so I am not sure who helped you, but I will tell them all and they will no doubt each claim the credit. lol. When you have such a passionate boss, it is hard for the enthusiasm not to rub off. More

Kids can climb through tunnels with head lamps and see and touch real crystals in the caves. Way more fun and kooky than your average museum. Great way to engage kids in geology.

I love your use of the word 'Kooky', if you had met René then you would know that this word perfectly suits his personality. The purpose of building it this way was indeed to engage more people and share his love of crystals, I am pleased that you have appreciated this. Thank you for your lovely review More

As people from Cairns we go up and visit the Tablelands on a regular basis. If we are in Atherton the Chrystal cave is always on our to do list. Our daughter loves cracking the geodes abd has already a collection of them. The Museum is amazing especially if you are fond of gems and chrystals. The beautiful shop is... More

Shhhh, don't tell everyone about the chocolate rocks, I like tricking the kids by munching away on the rocks in front of them, the response is priceless... Thank you for your lovely review and your loyalty. More

Great place to take the whole family, informative and helpful staff. Definitely a must do for the whole family. Was so good to see all the different crystals and to be able to purchase them afterwards if you wanted.

If you have kids that need to touch everything, then this is the place to visit! My kids were able to feel so many different types of stones and crystals, which made it so much more enjoyable, without having to say "don't touch that" 100 times.. It really is quite incredible to see this mans passion and he is still... More

We did consider parents when we made the 'feel free to touch' rule. Crystals are meant to be touched, and while we have had the odd mishap and a few incidents of blatant vandalism, we are always amazed at how much respect the vast majority of visitors have when you allow them to touch and photograph. That nice we visited the caves three times. Loved the walk through the man made caves and looking at the work this man has put into it. Every thing was beautiful.

3 times! that is wonderful. René does try hard to be a bit mysterious, so it is easy to miss the odd crystal each time you go through. Thank you for your comment. We continue to upgrade and improve the museum with new displays and exhibits. More
