- LP2 contributionsA bit over priced for what you getToilets and change rooms were a bit unclean, and I felt a bit uncomfortable having the men’s change room integrated in with the female change rooms. Quite a lot of kids dive bombing and screaming which wasn’t very relaxing. We did like the windows looking into the natural space from the water - but would have appreciated the windows to be clean so we could see out properly as they were pretty dirty.Hi Y2695WJmarionw, Thank you for your valuable feedback. - GingeMelbourne, Australia33 contributionsNot worth the doshPretty underwhelming really. Forked out $140 for 2 adults and a 12 yo on a Saturday for 90 mins. The unisex change room was uncomfortable. Only one enclosed shower available, other was out of order or had a door missing. Usable shower had hairballs waiting for us. Pool was too crowded and had to wait for opportunity to enter spa. Jets on my home spa were more powerful! Windows needed a good clean, views spoiled. We enjoyed our little swim and relaxed a bit. I'm sorry to say, but the experience was essentially just an indoor heated pool, nothing extra special at all and costing 10 times more. There was a water fountain with paper cups, wow. Towels were extra, gowns were extra, special pool was extra and off limits because we had a child. The long line and very involved sign in process gave the illusion that this was going to be an experience like no other. Not worth it sorry.Hi gingersprocket, Thank you for taking the time to share this constructive feedback with us. - AdventurousSueMelbourne, Australia3 contributionsI will not return.I was very much looking forward to visiting the Hepburn Spa and Bathhouse, my last visit was about 20 years ago. Unfortunately the facility is not well maintained, and many areas appear dirty and unkempt. I developed a painful ear infection the day after the visit, I am not prone to ear infections. I subsequently read reviews and it appears other patrons have experienced ear infections when visiting this facility. Despite sending the receipt and medical certificate to Hepburn Springs they refused to provide a refund. They also do not provide a way of attaching your locker key to your robe. All the robes are identical, so if you take your robe off and enter a pool, someone else may take your robe by accident, along with your locker key (unless you have a pocket in your bathers there is no where to put it). My robe went missing, and I was advised missing robes happen all the time, along with locker keys. A better system needs to be created. There are much better spas in the area that have opened in the last 20 years.Hi AdventurousSue, Thank you for taking the time to share this constructive feedback with us. - Ben HGreater Melbourne, Australia4 contributionsNice place. Lacking luxury finish and a bit tired.Pretty disappointing experience overall. The place is nice enough, however having never been previously, it would have been nice for check in to explain a bit more about the baths and the experiences on offer. We stayed 2 nights in one of the suites. The layout is great, although it's a bit run down. Roof is stained. Tapware is not secured properly. Windows are filthy. For a Luxury experience you expect a bit better. Things like the bed base being exposed also cheapened it. The suite we stayed in was adjoining 3 others. The walls are thin and you could hear others in the room above and alongside. Not really what you want for a couples weekend away... There were no bath bombs or anything to add to the lovely central bath which I found surprising. And the bread put out on arrival with jam was stale and inedible. Also be mindful that 48 hours is required to cancel any treatment. We had massages booked for post checkout on the Sunday, however due to an unavoidable 7 hour drive on Sunday that presented itself we tried to cancel with 26 hours notice and were denied. Overall it's a nice place. But we wouldn't go back.Hi BenHardman, Thank you for taking the time to share this constructive feedback with us. Your feedback has been passed on regarding your room and the foot traffic in the adjoining apartments that can be herd. Regarding your treatments, we refunded these in full for you after our spa manager was able to have a look into your request for cancellation. Yes we do have a cancellation policy (as do most businesses) however we are very flexible and will do our best to work with our guest. Thank you. - GoPlaces6114122 contributionsGlorified YMCA??Really surprised about how many wild kids were running around screaming. The spa is nice, but for $55 I’d expect it would have an over 12 age limit. Wasn’t very relaxing having kids splashing in our faces and yelling their heads offHi GoPlaces611412, Thank you for your valuable feedback. We appreciate the time you took to share your opinion. We have noted your comments however our Bathhouse is a family friendly bathing area. - Babs2027 contributionsVery disappointing with noisy guestsVisited Spa on 14th April at 12.30pm. I booked for my husband and I for the Sanctuary Experience which from the website was lead to believe we would “enjoy the relaxing and serene environment”. At a cost of $110 per person I was extremely disappointed in the experience. 30mins into our session a large number of tour of guests/tourists arrived in the Sanctuary all talking loudly, running around and generally occupying all facilities. No attempt was made by these people or the staff to explain the need for the “serene” environment. This made staying in the Sanctuary unacceptable and we retreated to the Bathhouse where once again this large group then filtered into. We eventually left after 60mins. I think it is totally unacceptable to allow such a large group when there was already other guests and it was a small busy space. It completely ruined the experience for us and I suspect the other guests. The Sanctuary is too small to have such large groups occupying the facility. I would never have booked if I had known. I have now emailed twice and received no response to my complaint. In addition windows are filthy so trying to enjoy forest surroundings is impossible Do not recommendHi Babs202, Thank you for taking the time to share this constructive feedback with us. We have been in contact with you via email to discuss this further with you, we are just waiting on your reply. Thank you. - Maria M2 contributionsUnderwhelming spa experienceA beautifully maintained complex with great amenities. However, a group booking for 10 people was made at $55 pp. The website gives a suggested time frame of 2-3 hours for the experience. We were told that we had only 90 minutes. Our booking was for 9:30 am and it was very quiet at this time but by the end of our 90 minute experience the pool and spa became too overcrowded making the overall ambience less relaxing and too noisy. Given the exorbitant rate for such a short stay I would not revisit. I have paid $75 pp for a full day stay at a spa. I would have expected that at $55 pp there would be a cap on the number of patrons per sitting at the very least ensuring a quiet and relaxing experience.Hi R6757BQmariam, Thank you for taking the time to share this constructive feedback with us. We are sorry to hear that your bathing experience didn't live up to your expectations. We have a range of bathing, treatment and package options at the spa that will start with needing to allow 1hr right up to 6/7hrs. I couldn't locate a booking for you on the information above however it seems like from what you have mention that you were booked in for Bathhouse bathing which is correct, 90mins of bathing in our mineral pools. If you would like us to look into your booking we will need you to email reservations@hepburnbathhouse.com with your booking number and details to see why you needed to allow more time in your day, however if it was just bathhouse bathing then this is correctly displayed on our website. Thank you. - Michelle HMelbourne, Australia1 contributionJust ‘ok’, better places to goA nice bathhouse with potential but probably wouldn’t go back. To start with, the change rooms are communal, which is not immediately obvious. There are separate change rooms and showers, but you are then stuck in that cramped space to get ready or dressed again. Separate male/female rooms would be much better. There are only 4-5 pools available (we had access to the private sanctuary too) and all inside. One of them had a nice view. Compared to Peninsula Hot Springs, it seems more like a public pool than a bathing experience. The day we went wasn’t overly busy but you were always sharing pools with at least 6+ other people which doesn’t make it the most relaxing or give you any privacy. The showers are terrible and are either freezing cold or scalding hot! No matter what I did I couldn’t get it to a comfortable temp. Place seemed generally run down. Had been looking forward to going to the cafe for lunch afterwards but then realised we had to walk out of the complex and down the road to get to it, and then it only had 3 tables inside and barely any food left at 1pm. We decided to go elsewhere. Although we felt relaxed when we left, it was an underwhelming experience unfortunately and would not recommend.Hi Michelle W, Thank you for your valuable feedback. We appreciate the time you took to share your opinion. Bathhouse and Sanctuary bathing is social so there will always be other guests in the area, we do offer private bathing which may have been better suited for you. Please let us know if this would be something that would interest you in the future. Thank you. Attended here today for a day spa package consisting of 90 mins mineral soaking in the Sanctuary followed by 60 min massage and a tasting plate at cafe.
This is my first day spa experience. When I walked in I was quite impressed. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Architecture was lovely with pools looking out onto a heavily verdant hill.
As other reviewers mention, the change room is unisex. However there are very many private and roomy cubicles.
What I liked
I paid for access to the Sanctuary mainly because children under 16 are restricted and you have the use of 4 pools and 2 saunas of varying types. The Sanctuary is sold as bathing “experience” in a more relaxing and serene environment. It is not private. You get 90 minutes to “rejuvenate the mind and body” and robes and towels are complimentary. Having read other reviews, I think the place must have been spruced up a notch as everything appeared to be in good working order - no sign of difficult and painful floors, dirty change rooms or broken equipment and so on.
What I didn’t like
I was initially pleased to have paid a little more to avoid kids under 16 doing what kids do at any swimming pool and have a decent amount of time to rejuvenate the mind and body.
However, it appears that the numbers of people in the Sanctuary at the same time may not be limited and, as other reviewers have mentioned, pools and saunas got rather full of people. Such close proximity gets a little uncomfortable and down grades that “relaxing, serene experience”.
With the removal of children, another cruel and unusual punishment arose Some people (a lot actually) didn’t seem to understand the etiquette of not talking loudly in this sort of environment. I just didn’t want to hear the psycho-analysis of the awful coworker or the long and tedious story about every single detail of the trip to Fiji. I just kept moving away, but by now other pools had no space and therefore there were more and more talkers feeling the need to pour out their life to their friend in the intimate surroundings of a sauna or the salt pool where the acoustics meant a whisper was amplified immensely. I imagine everyone on the premises could hear.
This lack of awareness is something that is mentioned in many reviews of the bathhouse and I think it sad that an experience with so much potential to be lovely can be spoilt by other people with their selfishness.
I don’t really know what the bathhouse can do about this as it is other people’s behaviour and therefore pretty much outside their control.
Perhaps the Bathhouse could employ a professional “shusher” - like a librarian back in the day who would sush people in the library who were talking when people were trying to study.
How about a “Spa Etiquette - Do’s and Don’ts” sheet and signs asking people to be quiet. There are already discrete signs near the pools reminding people to share things. What’s one more.
The UK rail service has introduced “silent” carriages on their rail services - no talking, no phone sounds - silence. If the sanctuary is to be marketed as special, introduce silence.
I also think that a maximum number of people at any one time should be imposed. Everyone has to book in mainly on line so that should be easy. If there are already limits, they need to be reduced.
Having said all that, at the end of my 90 minutes I left not quite as rejuvenated and serene as promised but that was probably more about that lass’s trip to Fiji and the fact she flew with Jetstar than anything else. I dressed and went off to another area where I undressed again for my massage with a lovely professional masseuse Alex who gave me a great massage in a quiet and private environment. Thank you Alex.
I left to try and find the cafe which I was surprised to find was a short walk away. The regional tasting platter was ok, although I think there was nothing actually from the region unless it was the danish salami or the very small wedge of french brie. The coffee was undrinkable, being extremely bitter - it’s either a training issue or invest in a new roast.

Extremely poor customer service. My appointment was cancelled on the scheduled day by the business due to a staffing issue. I attempted to request a refund for the service not provided and after multiple phone calls over weeks and requests to several different staff, they refused to refund my gift certificate. Instead they refunded the purchaser who gifted me the certificate without my knowledge!

The private bathhouse was nice, sufficient pools and nice and quiet during the week, I would recommend this.
Unfortunately that’s all I can recommend. As part of my honeymoon, I also had a private milk bath booked with my wife in the spa and nothing at all about this was relaxing.
Upon checking in to the relax lounge you are asked to complete 2 pages of paperwork (emergency contacts, preferences, medication etc) - a ‘great way’ to start relaxing which still blows my mind and kinds of sets up the rest of the review nicely.
We were then taken to our bath which was in dire need of some repairs. The bath tap would not stop dripping, the volume button on the wall was broken (music cut out frequently) and didn’t work, the roof was warping and discoloured.
As you can imagine, none of this is or was relaxing in the slightest, but more so the opposite, especially for what you are paying for it.
I would have given the feedback on the way out but 1 I didn’t want to be like Shane from White Lotus on my honeymoon, and 2 nobody really asked or seemed to care how our experience was, I get the feeling they already know.
As mentioned I would come back to the bathhouse, but unfortunately would recommend to steer clear of any spa or private bathing treatments if you are coming here to relax.

We booked in for the 90 minute spa experience.
We arrived the staff were so friendly ! And helped us with everything which was great! Even a little tour. Only down side I would have to say was the uni sex toilets it's not pleasant 😒 sharing with males made me little uncomfortable. Than a male staff member would come and check up on you when your time is up I didn't like that as I felt he was pushing us out for the next people. But overall the experience was lovely super relaxing 😌

Booked the sanctuary package with a group of friends which got us 90min session in the public and private baths. It was a mixed experience.
The sanctuary was worth the extra as the public section was jammed, like no room to get in the warm bath. The salt pool and semi outdoor bath were highlight. It was divine soaking in the heat looking out at the trees. You get robes and towels which are very useful. A friend booked so I don’t know if they were included in the price or if we paid extra.
Staff checked the rooms constantly, recording numbers and taking samples which was a positive sign.
However….
It’s old school style. Some of the complex was built in the 1895. The floor is very rough and uncomfortable to walk on, many people were hobbling if they didn’t have thongs. Even those in thing spoke about the discomfort. The showers barely worked, non existent pressure. No soap in the bathroom, the dispensers appeared damaged. Unlike most bathhouses there didn’t appear to be general conveniences like mats on the change room floors so your clothes don’t get wet, hairdryers, toiletries etc. The bathrooms mirrors were completely fogged up so useless.
Unisex change rooms could be forward thinking but it’s way way too small and could use a facelift. There were 4 shower cubicles on one side (there might have been more but they were out of order) with change cubicles on the other side. There’s 1 very narrow family change section. Like most people we opted to shower at home. It was just easier and prevented us waiting in an uncomfortable space.
The session was highly relaxing. If you don’t compare to larger, newer or overseas bathhouses it’s a good experience.

Like most people we opted to shower at home. It was just easier and prevented us waiting in an uncomfortable space.
The session was highly relaxing. If you don’t compare to larger, newer or overseas bathhouses it’s a good experience.

My husband and I booked in for a massage . The changing rooms were freezing . And unfortunately when having a massage the room was freezing as well .. as much as my lovely masseur tried to keep me warm with towels I couldn’t warm up .
Then I had to change again in the freezing change room .
The massagers we had were lovely.. just disappointed.

If I could give this place a zero rating I would. They charge $110 for a “sanctuary” experience that is no more than a public pool environment with dirty and old infrastructure. The change rooms are unisex and uncomfortable, cold and badly in need of upgrading. The pools are small, overcrowded for the space and barley lukewarm. Areas closed due to “malfunction” so not accessible . The place was noisy and the aesthetic awful. The ceilings are covered in what looks like mold. This place looks like it hasn’t had a cent spent on it for the last twenty years. Please don’t waste your valuable time and money.

The Sauna hasn't worked for over 1 year now. That is not good enough.
Showers didn't work and there was a light loose in the spa pool which someone could have been electrocuted. Not safe!

Dear Benjamin255347,
Thank you for taking the time to provide your review.
Our apologies that we did not meet your expectations during your recent visit.
The steam room was unfortunately out of order due to an unforeseen maintenance issue and has been closed since last week as we are awaiting parts to be delivered.
Our Hammam steam room is still available for our Sanctuary guests.
The light has been checked by our maintenance team the day that it was brought to our attention to ensure there is no safety hazard to any of our guests.
We hope that you consider giving us another chance in the future.
Warm regards,

Great spa experience and atmosphere and pleasant surroundings. I recommend paying a bit extra and try the sanctuary mineral bathing experience instead of the general public bathing. Especially to get away from kids and less people. Do try a massage session before the spa to relax you.

Felt like the pictures on the website and trip advisor were not accurate of the experience and a bit deceiving. The place is huge. There were so many people and kids it felt very overcrowded and hard to get into the spas at times. Change rooms also had a wait time.
The private steam room was not worth the additional money. Smelt like mould and didn’t have the “spa” vibe it could have had with dimmer lights, some music and a darker room (similar to the public steam room as part of the sanctuary package).
Wouldn’t recommend for someone with sensory issues.

Hi,
I’ve been trying to contact the spa for a couple of days now and the phones are never answered. They just loop on a hold cycle. How can I contact the spa?

It’s frustrating because their phone lines don’t operate well. Best to send an email via their website or message via their Facebook page. It is on the pricey side, but worth going to :))
Is the water in the pool still clean in the evening?

Car or bus be best way. If u a visitor with no transport, maybe be visit the tourist bureau in Melbourne and ask re a tour to this area which includes the spa. This way you will see all the best the area has to offer.
