The National Forest is one of England’s most ambitious environmental projects. Across parts of Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire, 200 square miles are being transformed, blending ancient woodland with new planting to create a new national Forest. There is a wealth of choice for great days out or short breaks with bustling attractions, gentle walking and brilliant activities. In less than twenty years, one of the least wooded parts of the country has been transformed. Around 8 million trees have been planted, trebling the woodland cover and creating habitats for wildlife and a beautiful landscape for people to enjoy. The ultimate goal is for woodland to cover around a third of the Forest area and to link the ancient forests of Charnwood and Needwood. The gentle undulating landscape is perfect for walking, cycling and horse-riding. And through the creation of new habitats, The National Forest is an ideal location for bird and wildlife watching. From watersports to wildlife watching, cycling to craft centres and loads of wet weather options too, The National Forest really does have something for everyone. And in this ever-changing landscape as the Forest grows, one thing is guaranteed, there is always something new to see.

We were in a caravan close the Conkers area and so went for a walk in the forest on our first evening. Our impressions were not good. Even though there are some signposts pointing to the paths through the forest they are not well marked. We couldn't find a map of them either. The paths themselves are not very well... More

We live in Ashby de la Zouch which is in the centre of this area of newly planted woodland with footpaths, cycle ways and lots of historic and family friendly attractions. One of the newly developed outdoor attractions is The National Forest Cycle Centre at Hicks Lodge near Ashby with cycle hire and a cafe. Last week we enjoyed the... More

The National Forest is very young. However, it is well planned with the YHA just next to it, Adventure play ground, lake... quite a few things to do with young family. The walks are easy grade as well. You can do short walks or longer walks. Make sure you bring a map with you if you want a long walk.

Miles upon Mile of woodlands make up this vast modern forest. Look carefully and you can still find elements of the industrial history that has made way for this forest. Coal mines, clay pits and potteries strewed this area from the 18th century, now you can lose yourself walking or cycling the laid paths or venture off track to find... More

Lots of good footpaths to choose from. Lot's of history about what was once a mining area has been turned into a new forest area.

This seems to be a young forest, and with the general decline of forests, it's great to see and support something like this. I stayed at the National Forest YHA and there was lots to do all within easy reach, Conkers, Swandlicote ski centre, Hicks lodge to name a few. There are some great paths and cycling routes, and exploring... More

A lovely place for a quiet but easy walk in the woods on good paths. It was our second trip and we shall come again.
