- catbail13Farnham, United Kingdom10 contributionsExciting experience with outstanding scenery.I first did this drive many years ago in a Fiat Panda with a friend and our kids. It was misty (!) which meant we couldn't see much. We decided to do it again in better weather, and were amazed how blase we'd been! Having said that, it was a great drive, and we certainly never felt close to death! You have to be careful but it's well worth doing. (I have put that I went in Oct 22, simply because it's a required field, but it was far longer ago than that!)Visited October 2022Travelled with familyWritten 24 September 2023
- Alexander B1 contributionNot as difficult as made outWe drove both this and Wrynose. Yes it's a bit steep and bendy, but we had absolutely no issues at all. It was pouring with rain, but a good test for our 4.6 Range Rover. The car is 25 years old so not one of the new ones. Car was fully laden with luggage and dogs. But we had no issues, no loss of traction, no sliding etc. The road does have a few steep bends, but if you have some driving skill then you'll be fine. Scenery is fabulous. So good that we drove back across it again.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 October 2023
- Andrew T1 contributionPleasure to driveI’m sorry but to all those people leaving less than 4 stars for this road obviously have no idea how to drive a car and need to re take there test. The road is a pleasure to drive on and offers breathtaking views of the beautiful Lake District and one of the best roads in the country. The only reason i would have for avoiding this road is the weather conditions but thats just common sense…Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 2 December 2023
- Nick N2 contributionsAmazingWhy would you drive anywhere with a dodgy clutch? I cycled up The Struggle, then Blea Tarn Pass,Wrynose,Hardknott and back the same way. No issues at all, even in the wet! I am not a pro cyclist but an average 60 year old riding a Hybrid Bike! Top Tip,I ride with a 32/48 chainset and 11/34 cassette.I do all the climbs in the lowest gear from the very start! Sure there are rough patches, like there are on many country roads but no big deal.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 28 December 2023
- Alex H4 contributionsStunning and thrillingThis drive is incredible. But you need to be prepared. If you don't understand what '30% gradient' means, from the well signposted road, then you probably shouldn't be driving on this road. It is beautiful, and a thrill, and I thoroughly recommend it to confident drivers who are experienced beyond town and basic country roads.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 February 2024
- michelle cBuxworth, United Kingdom179 contributionsA Stunning Drive over Hardknott and Wrynose PassDrive this yesterday following a stay in Windermere - I have driven this route 4 times over the years and had forgotten how scary some parts are ! Luckily we barely met any traffic - Thankfully the huge mobile home in front decided he wouldn’t carry on and reversed out of the road at the start point ! Lucky for him as if he had carried on he would not have got through the part where there is a house and a wall and a very narrow gap to get through before the ascent of the pass We had great weather and fantastic scenery.. Drive it in the new new Defender that dealt with the inclines well .. It also has the incline view on the dash and yep it most certainly is 30% in parts .. The view was worth every hairy momentVisited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 April 2024
- Nick H43 contributionsNot for the faint hearted.Went over the Hardknott pass on my HD Pan America. It’s not for the faint hearted. Stay in first gear and stay focussed and it’s worth the effort but if you are not an experienced rider then avoid it, and I would personally not do it in a car. You have been warned. 😅Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 4 May 2024
- Nick RBournemouth, United Kingdom158 contributionsHairy Hair PinsWe were going to skip Hardknott pass after watching a few Youtube videos and people advising to only attempt with powerful cars. We rented a small Fiat 500 for our Lake District trip and thought maybe this is not worth the hassle but as it turns out we did have a go and our little car worked the 25% gradient hair pin turns like a dream. I agree with other drivers that confident drivers only should tackle the pass, especially if you are on your way up and meet another car on a hair pin turn. Lots of concentrating , forward planning and heavy breaking are essential.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 19 June 2024
- Rossco B6 contributionsBest road in the country.I can't believe some of the reviews on here, especially the ones from bikers. My friends and I travelled from London to ride this road. It's the best ride ever. We loved it so much that we went back over again. Am up here for another few days and will definitely be riding it again as it was raining when we rode it.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 30 June 2024
- Millie L3 contributionsBest day of my life!Im quite shocked by some of the comments of "hell on earth" and "avoid like the plague" there were plenty of signs and turning points saying not suitable for large vehicles and the gradient. The biggest hint maybe you can see the road from miles away going up the hill. Its a road I have always wanted to do. And finally got to do this on my motorbike! Incredible! Yes challenging, but only difficult if you dont know how to control a vehicle on a hill. First gear, wait for vehicles to pass so you can use the whole road and concentrate. I wouldn't recommend trying this road if you have too much confidence or not enough as youll make mistakes. Brilliant views! Would 100% recommend if wanting to challenge yourself. Also... unless you have done it, once completed no one will believe you how steep it is... so try and get some pics to show family and friends of the achievement 🙂Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 2 July 2024

It is challenging but also enjoyable road and the views are rewarding (for a passengers only, as driver is too focused on the road) . You don't need to drive any 4x4 to cover this route and everything is OK, as long as you don't come across some morons trying to cover this road in campervan or in low-suspended sport car (the sparks from under the chassis are amazing, in such case).
If you are trying to reduce stress and want to avoid potential problems, I suggest to start early in the morning when there are very few vehicles. You will definitely avoid a situation where two columns of vehicles are moving in the opposite direction (the places to pass are usually 1 or 2 vehicles long only).
When going downhill, remember about low gear - otherwise you will quickly smell your brake pads (fortunately, the automotive industry has long since abandoned brake pads made of wood).

This road really takes you through the motions. False sense of security is definitely a huge thing here. You have the aesthetically pleasing views the stunning windy road and the sheer torment of an up hill battle that tests your driving skills and the love and trust you have for your car. You and your machine will be best friends by the end of your drive. 10/10 would recommend to your arch nemesis.

This pass is a very challenging drive with narrow very steep inclines and very sharp hairpin bends, which continues from the slightly less challenging Wrynose Pass. if approaching from Wrynose, there is one signed opportunity to abort before continuing. The views are very impressive, but drivers unfortunately have little time to see the best, having to concentrate on the conditions. The surface is rough in places and there are a small number of locations where stopping is possible. Only attempt these routes to see the views providing you are confident of your vehicle and driving skills.

Didn't intend to but sat nav took me over the pass on the way to Eskdale. Oh my god, what a drive. Scenery you can't describe (I was blessed with a bright sunny day) and a road that ought to be in one of the Top Gear adventures. The road has a few potholes but generally not too bad considering its location. My BMW 5 series didn't seem to struggle with the hairpin bends but I can imagine smaller lighter cars may struggle. So glad the sat nav took me this way but would I do it again? Hmm!

Not sure whether to rate it 5 stars or none! We found It
Spectacular and the views (when you had the courage to look) were amazing. However, you have to really know the size of your vehicle, have nerves of steel, and be exceptionally good at hill starts, preferably on hairpin bends. Don’t attempt this in a small engined car, with a full load of passengers - unless they are keen on getting out to push. If you have a fear of heights, this would probably be your worst nightmare. One could describe it as exhilarating, we thought it ŵas unmissable, but wouldn’t do it again in a hurry - the hairiest bit was right at the brow of the pass when the road seemed to disappear, and all we could see was the bonnet of our car towering above us. This might look to be a nice shorter route between Eskdale and Coniston... it most definitely isn’t!

Wow what a road to experience - scary & exciting all in one. Just watch out for inexperienced drivers who would be better driving on wide A roads. Some young plonker driving other way did not give way and then froze when he’d blocked our path. We had to drive over a large rock to get past. Some damage to our foot footstep. Just glad we have a land rover which could get us out of the problem

5 stars for views and 1 star for signage.
I’m an experienced driver; cruised the Amalfi Coast, the Big Sur, tons of B roads but wasn’t prepared for this and think that’s the problem - the unexpected.
Like most others we blindly followed the SatNav (having come the “longer” route earlier in the day) and were just not expecting this road. By the time you realise, you’re already committed as the track is too narrow to do a u-turn and when you think it can’t get ‘worse’ - it does.
It was a fine sunny day and did it in an automatic Land Rover built for this sort of drive and still found it scary. Couldn’t see over the bonnet in parts due to steepness and sharp hairpins combined, so leaps of faith required as to what’s round the bend. Add to that the massive potholes and protruding rocks and you have inches (literally) for margin of error and can very easily damage your car. On the way up we saw an AA van having rescued someone. Midway a Jaguar was broken down with hazard triangles out and on the way down an older couple looking petrified had pulled frantically pressing the SatNav. We had to pass them on a very steep section, with inches to spare (hope they made it). Oh and there’s cows in the road as well as sheep just to add to the excitement.
Had I known what I was getting into I might have had a different mindset. Even for those choosing this rollercoaster, the road needs WAYYY better signage and SatNavs should not give this as a viable route in my opinion. Too many variables that make it a very risky drive; animals, weather, car needed for the terrain, road is in poor condition generally, no signal etc.
Needed a stiff drink back at the hotel. Story for the grandchildren!

Gorgeous views, but this road is HELL ON EARTH.
Family of four staying at nearby Eskdale. Daddy thought it would be fun to set off on a little ‘drive through the hills’ on this soggy Lake District Day. Decided to head up this road so we could take the children to visit the Roman Ruins. Had a nice little look around and then thought it would be clever to crack on even further up the road. Holy cr*p. Hairpin turns so steep and tight I thought we were all going to die. My ten year old son to the rear right of me asking for his inhaler due to a full blown panic attack. Eight year old daughter directly behind me pulling my hair yelling ‘yaaaaaaaaaaas’ and ‘yeeeehaaaaawwwww’ round every bend like she is riding a horse. Twenty six week old foetus in my stomach punching the living daylights out of me from inside me due to severe dislike of possible G-Forces. Husband to my right with white knuckles on the steering wheel and a toothy, nervous grin that made him look like Wallace from Wallace and Gromit for a good twenty minutes.
Do yourself a favour and walk it instead.

Ode to the road of hardknock pass... penned by the not so rockhard.
Take hardknock pass the quickest route they said.
A lovely scenic drive and time for a few gins then before bed.
Little did we know what lay ahead.
And we would soon be very very very scared.
Sharp turns and bends, all one in ten.
And Sharon had to manouvre through them over and over again.
Jo then took the wheel
With her nerves of steel.
Negotiating the hills
whilst we were fighting over the calm down pills.
Trying to block out the screams which were high pitched and shrill.
Meanwhile Helen and Jac traumatised in the car.
Blocking it out by drinking the contents from our travelling mini bar.
Another epic adventure for the intrepid four
Who really did not want to travel on this path no more.
Steep cliffs and turns, we had to constantly beep.
As in the middle of our roads there were millions of sheep.
Our hair was on end and we were really fraught
Travelling on the devil's highway.
Who-d have thought.
With nails bit to the quick and feeling awfully blood sick
The end was in sight and we were still in fright.
The moral of this story is.... The fastest route is not always the best
Unless you have done a mountain rally driving test.
Shakily yours..
From the lucky to be alive'rs.

Mother and I got sent over this death-trap of a road last summer whilst touring the Lakes. We drove from the Ravenglass railway to Ambleside over it because the SatNav said it was safe. My poor Ford Focus' engine was screaming, I was petrified driving. Never again. Do Not use this road.

Hi, I'm an American who'll be in the Lakes District next May (2020) and will have a smaller car (Vauxhall Astra, Ford Focus class). Drove Isle of Harris "Golden Road" (a "C" road) from Tarbert to Rodel last year (including an encounter with a Tesco delivery truck where I had to back up to a passing place!), so I'm comfortable driving single track on the left. How does Hardknott Pass compare?
Thanks!
Written 20 December 2019
Hi, obviously I cannot relate to your experience, but Hardknott Pass is a difficult road to drive as a lot of the road is single car width, resulting in oncoming traffic having to attempt to pull across or worse still, reversing to a suitable passing place and also possibly having to go uphill on a steep incline.
My advice would be to avoid this route and look for an easier way.

Hello.everyone ! I'm a Japanese living in Tokyo, Japan.
My family and I are going to drive Wrynose Pass and Hardknott Pass on our way to Wast water from Ambleside in the first half of this October. I would like to ask you to answer our questions listed below. We are going to rent Ford S-MAX or similar (automatic mission)
1. How many steep slopes(33%) are there ?
2. How to drive safely.
3. How to call rescue when an accident happens(We are not good English speakers).
We have some experiences of narrow mountain roads driving in Japan.
Best regards.

If you are going to do the passes don't forget about Honister pass, plus Kirkstone pass via a road called "The Struggle".

Hi. I'm off to the Lake District in two weeks' time and plan to drive along Hardnott Pass. Would you say it's easier to go up the pass or down it? I guess going in the same direction as most people will help in terms of not needing to pass too many other drivers. Many thanks, Sarah
Written 29 April 2018
Hi Sarah, in my opinion both options are a nightmare. Cars are always coming in both directions and passing can be a challenge. Probably best if you can get there earlier as I would expect less traffic would be around then. Good luck and the views certainly won’t disappoint

Best road in the Lakes , esp when done along with the Wrynose. Farmers manage it in their old non turbo diesel Landies and a trailer full of sheep.
Should be part of the UK driving test !!

Love this response! Should be part of the US driving test as well (along with driving in snow!)...
