Lovely trip

Lovely steam trip down the line and back. Well worth a visit. Lots of renovations going on so it will continue to flourish.

Called in to see how the improvements were going and were very impressed. Can't wait to see the finished product in a few weeks time. Called int o the shop where the staff were very helpful and friendly. Will be back in the near future.

We have been regular visitors to the STR since around 1990, when the trains only ran as far as Gilderdale, just over a mile outside Alston. I have been delighted by the development of the line over the years. One feature I recall well was the opening of Kirkhaugh station and the access this gave to riverside picnic sites. The... More

Thank you for your review. Unfortunately massive drainage issues and such things as the location of the gas main caused most of the changes as did the construction of the South Tyne Trail pathway as where you previously walked was the old trackbed. Once the work is concluded we will be landscaping those areas where we have had to engineer.... More

A pleasant journey on the railway on a gorgeous spring day, disappointed that the train was diesel hauled not steam, and that the extension hasn't been opened yet, but none the less a nice trip on an attractive line.

Thank you for your review. We run both steam and diesel as well our new battery electrics so if you specifically want steam it's best to check on the day. We will be running to Slaggyford in late July so I hope we see you then More

Stopped for a brew at the platform cafe and to check on the progress of the renovation work. It seems to be coming along nicely and the cafe staff were friendly and welcoming. We got chatting to a knowledgable volunteer on the platform who explained how far the work had got and what they eventually hoped to achieve. Only a... More

We arrived after a quick google search to find that unfortunately there was a problem with the trains so none were running. We did stay and visit the museum (unfortunately this was awaiting an exhibit) and had tea and cake in the cafe. Staff were friendly and helpful and we will return in the future, looking forward to seeing the... More

This superb narrow gauge railway is located in the Northern Pennines. The narrow steep access roads may be a bit daunting to some drivers but choose a fine sunny day and the reward is the arrival at Alston. Here is the station and headquarters of this lovely railway. The staff are friendly and helpful. Dine in their station cafe then... More

For many years, our Saturday treat was a ride on the first train from Alston to Kirkhaugh from where most of the other passengers returned by train and we stayed to eat our lunch, drink our wine and relax in completely silent and quite beautiful surroundings - a hint of Paradise perhaps - before sauntering back down the path by... There are so many inaccuracies in this review that I would like to correct. First of all, you posted this on the 31st December when we had been closed since the 30th October so I'm not sure when you visited? Reviewing something that is closed is very unfair and writing something where things are so untrue is also unfair. First... More

We went on the 30th so the Halloween trains were running. The stations and train were decorated and there were lots of dressed up characters! There were also some colouring activities and goody bags which were great as we had a bit of a wait for the train. They were diesel hauled that day which we didn't know, apparently steam... More
