Yes, you have to pay to access the beach, but you are not paying a dive shop - it is a community access to the beach. We could have walked along the beach from the condo we stayed at but do not mind supporting the...More

Akumal is just beautiful. At mid-day, it's very crowded and there are boats coming in and out of the beach area, which smells heavily from gas. By 12:30 in the afternoon, the turtles were all scared away but one. One cute turtle, a couple of...More

Kids loved it, only $500 pesos per person and they got life jacket, snorkelling equipment and a guide tour for an hour. They saw 3 turtles and were very pleased

Unfortunately for you to swim in the area where most of the turtles are you have to pay guide for 50usd or so and they even have like guards in the water to watch people. I give 3 stars and not 1 because we were...More

Akumal bay has underwater areas that are like leans of switchgrass algae, a preferred source of food for sea turtles. Bring a good snorkel and flippers and a little patience and in due course you will get to sea these beautiful animals swimming, or grazing...More

We went there to snorkel with the turtles two days ago. Apparently they recently closed all public access areas to the beach, so now the cheapest way to get there is through the dive shop which charges 100 pesos just so you can actually get...More

We have gone to turtle bay in Akumal many times for free. About 4 weeks ago the hotels started charging $5 dollars to enter. If you want to swim in the turtle preserve you now must go with a guide. This will cost up to...More

Such a privilege to be able to swim where the turtles feed. A genuinely fascinating experience. Visited a cenote before in a cave, v cold water, but exhilarating.
