- Katie BaczurikLittleton, Colorado30 contributionsMust See CenoteThis cenote is a must see! We came here after a guide on another cenote tour recommend this one. It is incredibly gorgeous and large, with clear waters and lots of natural light. We loved that we could drive ourselves and after a short guided tour through, we could spend as long as we wanted exploring the cenote. We came in the afternoon on a week day in October, and we basically had the place to ourselves! We spent about two hours floating, swimming, swinging on the swings and taking photos. We would highly recommend this cenote as it’s easy to get to, very relaxed, and less busy at times.Thank you very much for your visit and comment RegardsWritten 23 October 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 October 2023

We did the cave tour, which is 1 of the 3 tours there! Bring the whole family!!!! Must do. - Corinne C2 contributionsExcellentWe booked this at our resort Akumal Bay and we enjoyed the whole trip. It’s a half day trip not far from the hotel. We ziplined with Andre and Joseph which was amazing 10 stops for the entire zip line. We then had a tour of the Caves with Jamie and he was hilarious ! The Cenote was amazing. Swam with fish and just had the best time. Photos were not included but was a great thing to purchase we got them air dropped and was quick and easy. Highly recommend this whole company! Made our trip.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 12 November 2023

One of the most beautiful caves in the world, according to National Geographic! Unfortunately we did not have enough time to do the swimming tour in the cave as well, so we will come back.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 November 2023
- solenodon_joeLondon, United Kingdom242 contributionsA magical experienceA fascinating and beautiful spot to explore. We were given a tour of the caves by the engaging guide called German who provided information about the stunning extensive cage system. We then got the chance to explore the forest before being given another guide to the cenote where we were left to enjoy swimming in the crystal clear water. A magical experience particularly since there was hardly anyone else there.Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 25 November 2023
- Anuj SoodMississauga, Canada6 contributionsNice place.Very large cave network. Much larger than the more commercialized ones. Our guide did a shoddy job explaining to our group of 3 in English as he had 2 Spanish speakers in the group and 90% of the time he was talking to them in Spanish.Thank you very much for your visit and comment by a chance do you remember the name of your cave tour guide in order to stop that attitude RegardsWritten 6 December 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited December 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 3 December 2023
- Poppy M2 contributionsFantastic day out!We had an absolutely fantastic time at Aktun Chen yesterday. We pre-booked the combo ticket with included the cave tour, zip lining and swimming in the underground cenote. We arrived on the collectivo bus and someone came to the road and drove us to reception. Everything was really well organised, all the staff were lovely and everything was provided (lockers, mask for the cenote etc). The location is spectacular and like nothing we have ever seen, totally amazing. We researched similar places (such as rio secreto) and chose Aktun Chen as it seem less commercialised and really cared about the environment, we are so glad we visited!Thank you very much for your visit and comment RegardsWritten 11 December 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 December 2023

We stayed at the Bahia Akumal and on a local recommendation took a kart to the roundabout inbetween resorts and then walked 10 mins along the pathway by the highway to the entrance where security called transportation for us. (You could also take collective, very cheap) We bought tickets only with 15% discount. We did the underground cave walk and then swam in a cenote. The underground caves were stunning, so intriguing to walk through and the guide was very knowledgable. It was warmer inside than we expected, I would recommend taking a bottle of water and decent footwear, also apply mosquito repellant liberally. We took the scenic walk heading back through the animal sanctuary. Next we headed to the cenote, so refreshing and we could stay in there as long as we wanted, we had the cenote to ourselves. Really small cave with no interesting formations at all. The only thing inside, worth seeing is the underground lake - "Cenote", but it doesn't look so well like on the pictures shown, because its too dark and you can not see it well. Almost no visitors in the park and we were in a mixed group (Spanish and English talking people). The guide was trying to explain us some stuff in English after the explanation in Spanish, but not successfuly, because his English was pretty poor. We understood him only, because in every cave we go the guides are talking almost the same stuff. The "tour" to the cave lasts only around 30 minutes and to go to the cave from Tulum you need around an hour. It's not worth the 30 dollars per person we payed at all and not worth the time either, because you need 2 hours to go back and forth for only a 30 minute activity. The animals that we saw were like in a zoo, surrounded by fence. In Europe we have seen many more better caves then this for half of the money we payed here. And in the end the guide asks you for a tip, even tought there is a sign on a tree that if you want you can leave a tip in the jar under the tree.

Our family was blown away by the experience here. We went to the Casa Tortuga cenote before and it was nice, but super crowded and a tourist trap. This place is off the main road with a more exclusive feel. Both cost around the same, $36 per person. We purchased our package from the kiosk in the Tulum parking lot. There are so many cenote options to visit. This has to be a top choice. You go on a walking cave tour thru 600 meters of gorgeous cave formations , complete with stalactites , stalagmites, and even tree roots creeping down from the cave ceiling!!! Then you are led to an underground cenote which has a footbridge and is well lit, showing the colors of the water and the cave itself. The photos on this page are true. After this you get in your vehicle and drive 10 minutes to the next leg of the tour. It's the best part, as you are given life vests and masks, and a guide leads you down a cave entrance . Hundreds of freshwater fish are at the waters edge. You plunge into the cool water and go on a tour, again marveling at the cave formations. The water is so clear we thought we were in an aquarium. If you have snorkel bring it, as it's an amazingly clear pool of water filled with fish. Only 100 people visit per day .... you do need a car as it's way off the main road. Zoo is lousy and restaurant closed in June 2022. No matter, this was a highlight of trip.

Amazing cave to see, the cenote inside is beautiful. I went with my friend and his wife who is a bit claustrophobic, so she was a little nervous. The areas inside are large, lit up and not very far from an exit so she was comfortable. The guides are also very knowledgeable and friendly!

We did the walking tour of a cave at Aktun Chen on January 25, found it a very worthwhile experience. Beautiful park in the selva some way back from the main road on a bumpy track (worth the drive - hang in!), very interesting 45 min walk through a former cenote now dried out and visitable by walking. We have visited several caves in the past and found this one well worth it. Our guide Alfredo Lopez was a very good guide. Also got to see some local animals in the zoo spaces here. Got our tickets at the Tulum ruins parking lot, a combined ticket for the Tulum ruins and Aktun Chen was 540 pesos (Tulum alone was 80 ps). Highly recommended.

Me and my girlfriend booked the combo online, we got there a bit late at 2:30pm. Started with the cave tour, the guide was very friendly and informative and also pretty funny. The cave itself is quite large, much larger than I would have expected which was a nice surprise.
Next we were to do the zip-line and the cenote swim. It started raining quite badly and being up in the trees attached to metal cables didn’t seem like the best of ideas. We talked to the staff and the manager and rescheduled to finish the two other activities two days later when the weather was supposed to be nice. They were very understanding and helpful.
We came back two days later and started the day with the zip-line. It was a lot of fun and the staff was great. The amazing surprise is the photographer, they are phenomenal, highly recommend buying the photos.
The cenote swim, was a refreshing way to end the day, same thing, staff were amazing and photos came out great. I can’t swim at all and sink like a rock, but you can double up with a life vest and the belt. They also supply the goggles. Had a great time.
Definitely one of the great things to do near Tulum.

We had an amazing time here! We went for a combo package: zip lines, cave exploration, and swimming in the cenote - and each part exceeded our expectations! The cenote was the highlight of our trip - so beautiful it looks unreal, rather large, and the water is so clear it’s just magical. They provided us with the floatation belts that were actually very welcome, and the goggles, and gave us a lot of time in the cenote by ourselves. The staff was so welcoming and friendly. We stayed at the Bahia resort, so we just walked there, and someone from the aktun chen picked us up at the entrance and drove to the reception, same on the way back. Only relevant note is that photos with professional cameras will cost extra, but they are so worth it, and you are still allowed to use your cameras no problem. All and all, could not recommend more!!

Aktun Chen is a wonderful day trip for just about everyone. Everyone was super friendly and accommodating. Tickets are easy to book online and a combo discount was available for booking all three activities (Zipline, cave tour and cenotes swim). As a bonus there is a rescue animal zoo with plenty to see (monkeys, snakes, parrots, etc..). The reception area is clean and has secure lockers for your belongings.
The Zipline was a blast. 10 different lines. The two gentleman instructors were super knowledgeable and friendly. The cave tour, in my opinion, was the bell of the ball. Lots to see and our guide was great. The cenotes is unique with lots of stalactites and catfish to swim with. Participating in all three activities takes roughly around 3-4 hrs. Depending on how long you take to view animals and swim in the cenote. There are drinks and some snacks available for purchase.
Aktun Chen is a little off the beaten path. It's about a 20 min drive into the jungle off the main highway, if you have your own vehicle. We took a cab from nearby Akumal and our driver was kind enough to bring us all the way to the reception. Aktun Chen has shuttles that run from the security entrance which is right on the highway to the reception area. They can call taxis if you don't have your own mode of transportation for a return to your hotel.
All in all, a great experience. Not super crowded, we visited during spring break in mid March. Lots of great employees that speak great English (if the language barrier is a concern). Highly recommend.

Be warned - Aktun Chen is quite far back from the highway on bumpy dirt roads. A low-lying vehicle may have trouble.
Atkun Chen has a few experiences to choose from, and we did the cenote. It was a great experience! We changed into our swimsuits and stored our belongings in the free lockers provided. They asked us to shower off in the outdoor showers provided before heading into the cenote. We then descended into the cenote, which was HUGE! Most of it was underground, with just a few sunlights poking through. A guide toured us around the cenote, taking a few pictures of us, and then we had free time to explore on our own. It was INCREDIBLE, with bats flying overhead and fish swimming in the water with you. They provide snorkel masks so you can see underwater.
They took some photos with our phones, and others with a more powerful camera, and those were available to purchase (digitally) later.
The cenote is so large that even if there are two other groups in there with you, you won’t feel crowded.
I highly recommend Aktun Chen if you want to explore a cenote during your Riviera Maya vacation!

Great cenote! If you like adventure this is it! Deep in the forest, yes like jumanji. Adventure starts just at the entrance, there is no pavement rode, place looks like your in the wrong place but keep going, once you reach the reception and make the payment they assign a number to get your ride. The drive time is like 12 min in a van with extremely uneven road and very jumpy trip, at fist you feel like is a long trip because the natural way of the roadway makes you feel it takes forever, but once you there you'll say is way worth it. The cenote is just magical, magnificent, full of energy, perfect balance of nature. Just an unforgettable experience. They also have the caves where they explain you how they formed. They have a few animals as well, like a little zoo. But the most precious advice is the get there early in the morning, so you can take your time to live intensely that experience beyond your expectations.

I was wondering since the activities are outside/swimming and also its very hot that no masks are required or atleast your choice....And if so is that a policy or per mexican government ? Thank you !
Written 21 January 2021
I was there in October and masks have to be worn as it is mandatory in Mexico. Of course you can remove them whilst you are swimming and zip lining but must be worn whilst walking around the complex and on their transport.
Written 21 January 2021
Same as across all of Quintana Roo. Masks must be worn at all times...unless swimming of course!
