Facing east with the sun in your face, white sand, calming waves, good snorkeling. Close to tasty restaurants with excellent service.

We were back at ABB&WR for a fifth time. We were once again greeted at front desk by our friends Raul, Zaisha and Corinna. The hot towels and good margaritas once again welcome after a long trip. It is hard to write a review for...More

All of the beaches here are super difficult to get to for public access. We had to go through Lo-ha restaurant and eat there in order to use the beach and avoid paying for parking. The area directly in front of Lo-ha was nice for...More

Beach is great! Sand is clean an white. Fishies, turtles, sea rays - all the best snorkelling right off. Many activities around including scuba diving.

Spent an enjoyable morning at Akumal beach. Despite lots of posts on here about the “criminals” lining the road on the way in we decided to go. Yep there are lots of touts trying to get you to pay to go diving with them but...More

We have visited 3 time since 2012 and this place has been reduced to ruins compared to what it once was. Every year it's worse and the criminals patrolling the entrance have made it nearly impossible to enter without paying, or swim out and see...More

Clear, warm water and the reef starts literally 20 feet from shore! You’ll see tons of beautiful tropical fish and a good chance of seeing the turtles.

Akumal is a beautiful low key beachfront community that is slowly disappearing just like PDC. All inclusive hotels have taken over, but there are still some nice spots and villas to rent.

They do a great job cleaning up the sargasm (seaweed) that washes up over night. We snorkeled and saw really huge turtles and a big stingray. There were a few large tropical fish and a few pretty smaller angel fish. The really isn't a reef...More

First went here almost 20 years ago. We love the fact that Akumal is a public beach and has always been less overrun by development. But it seems like that is changing (has changed?) One of the amazing things about Akumal was the fact that you could snorkel the bay freely and would regularly encounter sea turtles. That being the charm, it was inevitable that the secret got out. Our last visit we stayed on Holbox for a week, but scheduled in 2 nights at Akumal to take our boys snorkelling. I had taken them as little guys on rafts with 'windows', but now they are able to on their own. We were met at the beach with a protest of sorts, the locals were organized at the gate and asking that no-one use the beach out of solidarity for their cause, that being that some resorts or scuba outfits were trying to section off the Akumal Bay and have people pay for what used to be an open and free snorkeling experience. This was a real protest, judging by the armed guards. We respected their wishes and wished them luck in keeping it a free, public experience to enjoy the entire bay and ref there. Now I'm not sure if this was 'local entrepreneurs' (scammers) fighting the resorts/ legit guides or local fighting the scammers... Ironically we ended up at yal-ku, which never disappoints, but has also become quite an enterprise since we first went there in 2000 or so. So my question is, can you tell me the current state of affairs for swimming & snorkeling the bay / reef at Akumal? I thought this would be a good place to start.
