We stumbled on this place during a vacation to Cape Breton, and also happened to be there for Donald Òg day (Aug 4). There were tons of staff doing interactive exhibits, and there was food tasting as well -- biscuits with jam and butter, fish cakes with relish, and white pudding. The place wasn't crowded at all, so the kids... More

First off, the location could not be more beautiful! Sitting on top of a hill overlooking the Bras D'Or lakes, the Village is lovely. The staff are knowledgeable about the time period they represent and friendly! You begin your walk in Scotland, and follow the history of these Scottish immigrants through time as they journey to Canada and find a... More

Going through Highland Village was like stepping back in time. The 'staff' were very talented, explaining the period of time they were representing as if they were there now.

I really enjoy these outdoor ethnographic museums and this is one of the best. It is set on a hill with beautiful lake views. There are numerous buildings that are staffed by knowledgeable tour guides in costume and character. We even got an impromptu concert in a Scottish stone hut. It is a very photographic place. There are picnic tables... More

I love this little village on the hill overlooking the Bras D'Or Lakes! I go several times a Summer to walk around and soak up the beauty and history of my ancesters. We often make a family pillgramidge to the historical church on the site as well. I love the costumes, highland animals, music and Gaelic!

People played the part of people from 1700's and 1800's whom spoke Gaelic. Beautiful grounds and very interesting and informative on history of Scottish/Irish settlers.

Incredible views and lots of friendly people. Yes a lot of what they say it's scripted but it was still fun. The school house, complete with paddling boards was a highlight since my wife is a teacher. A must see for the views alone.

The drive on Bras d'Or Lake was beautiful but more breath taking when you got to Highland Village Museum. Taking a stroll through the Gaelic past was incredible. Staff was very pleasant and knowledgeable. They were dressed in there costumes doing everyday chores.A place worth seeing

It was very warm this day. Inside the building was refreshingly cool with folks in there to explain life during the era they were representing. Every building offered our dogs water and plenty of affection. Made the visit much better. Paths to climb but not so bad.

A great little village with costumed interpreters presenting historical information in first person. See blacksmithing cooking, farming equipment, and animals from the time Scots arrived in Nova Scotia through the early 1900's. Staff were friendly and well informed. Bonus- a lot of them used gaelic in their interpretations!

We are fortunate to have descendants from the original Gaelic speaking settlers on staff. They speak from the heart and often tell stories told to them by relatives years ago. Thanks for writing about your experience. More
