- Laurine SC1 contributionWonderfulI spent two months (November and December) as a volunteer with a friend in the turtle conservation project, it was really very enriching I loved this experience we were really able to participate in the preservation of turtles, we also cleaning the beaches and giving English lessons to young children from the village who were all wonderful! I recommend this experience 100%, Sri Lanka is a magnificent country and the people are also very kind and welcoming! It was a pleasure to share all these moments with the members of the project who were great and incredibly kind to us! Thank you again for everything I will never forget these moments spent with you ❤️Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 15 December 2023
- Enza B1 contributionAmazing experienceSuperb experience within the sea turtle conservation project in Kosgoda. A wonderful protection organization. Very nice team carrying the eggs and young newborns in the long term because they are the only ones to maintain them for 5 years until it is optimal to release them. Thanks to Dudley, Padmi and Prosentha for putting their heart and soul into this project. An unforgettable experience, I will never forget.Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 15 December 2023

- AzizBoca Raton, Florida11 contributionsRelaxing and enjoinmentI had an excellent time plus an outstanding service. I was recognized as an Ambassador member. The check in/ check out process was very smooth and the staff were very friendly and helpful which led to a relaxing and enjoyable stay. I strongly believe that due to the great efforts exerted by the General manager Mr. Mano Gunasekera and his very energetic Guest services manager Tharangi Peiris and their dedicated staff, this stay was fruitful and enjoyable. Moreover, I managed to visit Galle city Fort on the recommendation of the GM and it was ver rewarding. My immense thankfulness to Mr. Mano, Ms Peiris, Nishantha (the very nice driver) and to their great staff.Visited January 2024Travelled soloWritten 30 January 2024

They talk about wounded turtles, eggs and turtles safety 🐢🐢🐢 It's a good thing to pay for a ticket when you know that this money is going to a good cause. All the turtles in the treatment were harmed by humans!Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 17 February 2024

The turtles were amazing, we were lucky to see 3 hatch and my daughter was allowed to help carry them to the tank. Easy to find, easy to park, affordable, 30mins is enough so great for smaller kidsVisited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 8 April 2024

First of all, there are many turtle conservation sites along this road and there is one with a similar name not far from this one. I think it would be easy to confuse the two. My husband and I visited this centre during the day and were given a very informative tour in English by one of the staff. She explained their processes, how often the tanks are cleaned and gave us a lot of information about the turtles. I liked that we were only allowed to pat one specific turtle. We went back the next day in the evening to release some newly hatched turtles. That was a fantastic experience. I had called several other centres and had been told to just come at any time to release, even though there is a high chance that eagles and other large birds would prey on them if released during daylight. But at this place they actually waited until it was dusk and the eagles had stopped circling. We really appreciated the value the staff placed on the lives of each of these baby turtles. You can also volunteer at this centre for up to 3 months. We met one of the volunteers who was also really informative.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 June 2024

My husband and I had a great time. Dudley was very knowledgeable and you can really tell he cares a lot about the turtles. Dudley mentioned we could release baby turtles so we went back that evening to release 10 baby turtles. It was an amazing experience, also emotional seeing them head off into the water. Thank you Dudley we had a great time.
Tip for travellers, we asked a tuk tuk driver to take us to this Turtle sanctuary however he took us to a different one (it had the same name) its because this certain turtle sanctuary charge more for admission and give some money to the tuk tuk driver. This is unfair. When you arrive ask if Dudley works there. I don't want Dudley losing business because he generally cares about the turtles. 🐢 I have added a picture of the sign.

I volunteered at this project for a month and it was the best experience!
I was travelling alone in Sri Lanka but immediately Dudley and his family made me feel so welcome at the project and I settled in straight away. I felt so cared for, the food was incredible and it is a lovely living environment for volunteers.
The volunteer house was clean, very close to the sanctuary and felt very homely! Beds were comfortable and I slept very well.
As a volunteer we also participated in regular beach cleans which was great as it felt good to actively take care of where the mother turtles were coming and laying their eggs, making a difference in their safety and conservation of their environment.
As a visitor, you get to see how well the turtles are cared for, whether they are older rescues or baby turtles that have hatched and will be released back into the wild. I would definitely recommend booking to release baby turtles which was very popular for tourists and is such an amazing experience as it is done in the evening and the sunsets are incredibly beautiful!
Thank you all so much for making my time here so amazing! I enjoyed every second and will definitely be returning.

It’s good cause
You are not allowed to touch the turtles. You can see the turtle if one week to four years old. The average lifespan of title is 80-90 years. You can also do the volunteering there. If you can call them and find out what time they are going to release the turtle in the sea then visit at that time. Ticket cost for non Sri Lankan is Rs. 1000/- which is on higher side compared to a local Rs. 500/- but it is for good cause.

Never visit this place. The only thing to see here are few dead baby turtles and an arrogant ten year boy handling the ticket counter. He refused to give us tickets saying they are for guests but charged Rs.250 each to enter.

This sea turtle conservation centre is doing great things to ensure that the injured and resued turtles live out their lives as comfortably as possible. The actual centre looks a bit rundown but it's all run on charity donations from visitors and I honestly believe that the people working there love the turtles immensely.
It's worth a visit to fall in love with the guests that are lucky enough to be rescued and cared for in this place.
Then there's the little newly hatched turtles that are adorable too.
Altogether a lovely experience and definitely worth a visit to experience these majestic beauties. Any donations are helping to keep this project on track and ensuring there is help at hand for any needy guests...

The turtle conservation project undertaken by Sri Lankan Govt. is commendable and many organizations have come forward to support the cause. Well funded both by the local govt as well as by global fund raising the project is a success.
The hatcheries have trained workers and they keep records of the conservation work done year on year.
We visited one of the hatcheries and found the experience very satisfying.
Support this environmental cause.

I have known Sri Lanka since the mid-80s and I also know that there are many stations for the turtles. This time I was in Altuthgama and so I noticed the orientation board on the side of the road towards Galle. Go there and look at everything, it is wonderful how they look after the animals and raise them, care for them and, if possible, release them again. The chaplain at the station knows a lot about it and has an answer to every question. The station is happy to accept a small donation for its wonderful work. But remember when donating, only give banknotes because they cannot exchange coins. It is not that big and can be managed very well with children. Everything is in the shade. I wish you lots of fun and all the best for the station.

This is an educational experience that shows you why conservation of turtle species is required, the impacts of plastic in our oceans etc. You see at close hand a number of turtle species, I saw day old turtle hatchlings. I was a little bit concerned about holding one because I did not want to cause any distress to the turtle but trusted the guide. The part of the project that impressed me the most was the care provided for disabled turtles, either those born with shell deformities or one blind turtle who required hand feeding and those with injuries caused by fishing methods etc.
Please choose to visit this project rather than those facilities just there to allow tourists contact with turtles. The tuk tuk drivers all have their preferred projects relating to commission they receive so please ask for this specific project if you are in the area, only 500 rupees to enter.

Do you release the baby turtles everyday of the year or only at certain times
Written 3 January 2024
We visited so no expert but we were told that they release at dusk to give the turtles the best chance of survival! So you would need to be lucky to be there in the evening on a day a batch of eggs hatches

Hello.
I’ve seen that we do not need to prebook. But I can not find a price anywhere online.
How much does it cost to visit at sunset to release the hatchlings?
Written 29 March 2019
I'm not sure they release the little hatchlings every day - they have to wait until they are the right size to release.
We visited in the morning and then went back in the later afternoon.
Best to email them ahead

How do you get tickets? do you need to book before or can you turn up?
Written 16 January 2017
There are indeed touroperators that have this project included in their price (meaning they will buy the ticket(s) for you upon arrival). However, there is NO actual pre-booking possible, except from making a phonecall to the project to let them know how late you want to come (no pre-paying possible). The entry has a fixed price per person, which includes a tour (possibly by volunteers like me) explaining about everything you’ll see. If you come near sunset and want to release some hatchlings, that’s costing extra, but ensures you an everlasting memory. Phone details can be found on their website. With love, J. Hefti (from the netherlands)

I think it was 1000 Sri Lankan Rupees for our family which is very inexpensive for a family activity. We have a 2 and 5 year old and they were very entertained for the 30 minutes you spend there. As for other things, take a river safari. It is 7000 SLR for a family and takes 1.5 hours. Our kids were entertained the whole time.

How do I get to this place? Is it closer from Galle, Hikkaduwa or Mirissa, as I will be staying in all three during my visit.
Written 19 February 2016
The hatchery is located on Galle rd, around 30km North of Hikkaduwa (the closet city out of the three you mentioned). It is a fair journey from Hikkaduwa, and I think it may be better to find a local hatchery in Hikkaduwa (as I saw several of them passing through the city). If I may add, you might have the opportunity to swim alongside large, adult turtles when you stay in Hikkaduwa. I would recommend asking local people to direct you to the right beach to swim with them if interested, as most of them know about the turtles. Having done it myself, I would say it is a great experience.

Do you have to organize in advance to volunteer here and what is the minimal amount of time that you can volunteer?
Written 31 January 2016
I think that maybe you could contact the conservation project itself to find your answers for this. Good luck
