The Dakota Zoo was founded in 1961 by Marc & Betty Christianson with the help of a host of dedicated volunteers. The Dakota Zoo opened its gates on June 3, 1961 on 15 acres of developed land, with 75 mammals and 23 birds, and 40,000 visitors passed through the gates that first year. Today, thanks to the continued support of members, visitors, donors and volunteers, the Dakota Zoo has grown to a 90 acre facility housing 600 animals, birds, reptiles and fish representing 125 species and visited by more than 150,000 people each year.

While it's not the biggest or best zoo...after the long winter...ALLL the babies were out. I have never seen so many baby animals: camels, monkeys, kangaroos, reindeer... This is what made my visit here unique and worthwhile. Go in Spring.

I believe the zoo is doing fundraising to expand and that’s a good thing. It’s a relaxing place to spend a couple of hours. The Bears really need something better. Their Den is desperately in need of an update. It’s inhumane by Todays standards. Visit,...More

Spent a couple of hours walking around the zoo. Good selection of animals. Some enclosures were being repaired or updated. Good value for money. Kids enjoyed it.

Lots of space for the animals to roam! A great narrated train ride that is very enjoyable. A nice variety of birds, small animals and an inside area for a variety of sources, very well kept!
