Poplar Grove is a lovely place to visit. The grounds are historic and beautiful. Not sure they do the best job caring for the animals there though. It makes no sense to save horses from slaughter and then hold a "Kentucky Derby" fundraiser for them....supporting a culture that is notoriously abusive to horses. And to raise money for the farm... To be honest, Poplar Grove Plantation wasn't on our original list of places to visit on our most recent vacation to the South and Southeast. Located at 10200 US Highway 17 near Wilmington, North Carolina, it is a little out of the way from our usual line of march. And Poplar Grove doesn't have a reputation comparable to Oak Alley... My friends have been here on several occasions. The flowers are lovely. I especially enjoy the events. Basket making, ghost tours, herb sales. Drop in childrens camp! I would have been here all summer as a child. Learn some Gullah history without travelling hours.

It is history and I am always amazed at preservation of historical places. This is among several of the more rural plantation homes I have visited over many years and it did not disappoint. This site is a former sweet potato and peanut plantation and I was impressed to learn that family had maintained this for 6 generations. The fees... More

Poplar Grove is a beautiful, historic plantation. Every spring I go to the Herb and Garden fair and load up on spring planting, including my herb garden, my vegetable garden and all of my planters. I love that the plants are grown locally and by small business. My kids love the Halloween festival. Beautiful field trip for a sunny day!

Some nice items but minimal participation. I guess vendor participation varies. We'll try it again in the summer.

I love the grounds at Poplar Grove. The manor house if a neat slice of history, but the walking trail, the animal sanctuary and the weekly farmers market those are the real treasure of Poplar Grove.

neat little area to walk around with kids. There is a petting zoo but you have to pay. They will not let you enter the "farm" area without paying / membership fee. But you can take the nature trail which is about 1.2 miles and worth the walk if you are looking to get outside.
