About
It is now a universally accepted fact that it is the Continent of Africa that is the birthplace of our human species. This is the place where our collective umbilical cord lies buried – in the soil of this great continent. Nowhere else on Earth does there exist such definitive and conclusive proof of our common origin as a species and thus of our common destiny. The Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999.This site holds global significance as it contains a superbly preserved record of the various stages in the evolution of humankind over 3.5 million years. Maropeng – The Official Visitor Center to The Cradle Of Humankind and the Sterkfontein Caves provides a dual interactive tour experience. Maropeng’s portfolio includes a four star boutique hotel; a gastronomy inspired menu offering; large conference facilities and a green educational facility which offers dormitory style accommodation and is perfect for overnight visits.

    World class but sadly neglected.
A return trip with international guests. A world class facility sadly neglected by jhb Council. The staff are amazing and knowledgeable and do their best but more than a few of the interactive exhibits out of order. The grounds overground and neglected. What a pity. Indigenous surrounds are essential and part of the experience, but keep it neat, and the poor staffs uniforms tired and worn. Your maintenance team and marketing team need a performance review.

Poorly maintained but still enjoyable and saved by the guides
I remember when Maropeng opened. It was one of the first outings with our new baby and I remember being so impressed by the centre. I was very excited to return for the first time since then, having moved overseas. We once again visited with my oldest son, now a teenager, along with his brothers, cousin, aunt, uncle and ouma. We made the excellent decision to tour the centre with a guide. He was very knowledgeable and passionate about sharing the centre with visitors, so we all learnt a lot in an enjoyable way. The boat ride was lots of fun and took our kids by surprise. Sadly, some of the displays are clearly the worse for wear, with some not working at all. This was disappointing, after having seen how fantastic it was when the centre first opened. I hope management can make repairs and restore the centre to its former glory so that people can continue to learn about the fossils in the Cradle of Humankind.

    Solo trip
I decided to do a tour by myself and was able to take my time and go through everything at my own pace. The only downside of the tour was the interactive displays were damaged, some do not work and there are a handful of lights working in that area. Other than that the displays are mostly looked after.

Interesting world heritage site but its exhibits aren’t quite worth our time given how far we traveled.
We made a special detour on our tour of South Africa with admittedly very high expectations. What we enjoyed: the fact that it’s a world heritage site and all surrounding areas are preserved. After having visited the natural museums of Washington DC, New York, etc - we were a bit under-whelmed by the limited size and scope of the museum and its exhibits. Somehow, we thought *actual* original artifacts could be viewed here but they are stored elsewhere and every exhibit is basically a replica for purposes of protecting them (which we understand but frankly takes away from the whole point of making a big detour to view the exhibits). Speaking of the exhibits, they were also underwhelming and not commensurate with a world heritage site. Lastly, there is a dark boat ride, the purpose of which still eludes us. All in all, we enjoyed the journey but given how far we’ve traveled from home and our limited time, I wouldn’t have made the big detour.

Our family Christmas Lunch at the restaurant the service and the food was sub -standard and not very appealing. The service was shocking and the food was so bad that some of us did not even eat, the food that was presented on the menu when we booked and what was presented was far from "world class".

We were very disappointed

I didn't particularly enjoy this museum, but I have to give it at least 3 stars because it's quite an impressive structure and clearly lots of money and thought have gone into it.
Unfortunately I didn't do any research beforehand, I went as part of a day tour which included the Sterkfontein Caves and assumed, incorrectly, that the museum had the original fossils found at the caves. Instead I later discovered they are in other museums like the Ditsong in Pretoria, the Origins Centre in Johannesburg, etc.
So definitely worth it if you are with kids or if you just want to learn something and you don't mind looking at replicas, interactive displays and photographs.

Absolutely embarrassing as South Africans that took friends who had arrived from the UK with their young son who we thought would love the whole experience. Well, we are disgusted and disappointed! Maropeng is not being looked after, none of the experience tables on the bottom level worked, the ceiling was leaking water in various places and the boat ride ‘rooms’ are starting to look dilapidated. Won’t be back!!

Not worth the effort of finding this place now that the statues have all been removed .
Good visit for school kids aged 6 and up, I would say.
Long walk for older folks.
Very bad sign posting for both museum/visitor centre and caves.

Hi recentlybeen, we're sorry that you were not entirely happy with your visit to Maropeng. The temporary Long March to Freedom was a great addition to Maropeng while it was here. Our own exhibition continues to provide an enriching experience for many families. Thanks very much for your feedback on the signage. We'll look into it.

The visitor centre is excellent and well worth a visit. However, the main reason we were at Maropeng was for our annual conference.
From the very beginning it was difficult to get this conference sorted. The staff took forever to respond and finally we demanded management intervention. This should have been a sign because nothing improved from there!
Day 1: We wasted 20 minutes trying to get the sound sorted out. We couldn't get it done and due to tight timelines we had to continue without it and wait for them to fix it during lunch. This meant that a couple of presentations were not presented fully which was frustrating for the delegates as well as the presenter. I wasn't impressed.
Lunch was mediocre and the food was cold
Day 2 was utterly diabolical. Loadshedding was underway but since this is a way of life in SA we had checked that there was a generator and that all would run smoothly. We were assured it would. Not so much. The Visitor Centre ran off the generator even having the fountains in the foyer so why not the visitor centre. Nobody bothered to check that all was in order and we were left with one working plug, a few lights and no sound. Since sound was a non-negotiable on this day we stopped the presentations to sort this out. After requesting help from 5 different people over a 30 minute period to no avail I lost my temper. The Manager was nowhere to be found despite my epic tantrum (and never showed up at all to address the situation or apologise). Some arbitrary woman came out to tell me to calm down (which incensed me even further) and her colleague finally got us portable speakers from his office...which were blown and did not work. I kept being told there was loadshedding. I don't care - we have been facing this problem since 2008 and a generator was available. This was utter contempt for the clients. The Centre ran fine so why not the conference centre? Where was the backup plan? After a 50 minute delay we were under massive time pressure and we had to begin. The entire day was now utterly butchered. Presentations that had taken weeks to prepare were unable to be presented with videos or sound which was pathetic and so incredibly disappointing for everybody. We were so late due to the delay that one presentation was not done at all which was so unfair considering the work that went into it.
I was responsible for this conference and it was a total mess. I was so embarrassed and furious and our annual conference was totally ruined. I will NEVER use this venue again and I do not recommend that anybody else use it for anything important either. Shape up or don't bother Maropeng!
