Overview
More
Dismal Swamp State Park allows a unique wilderness experience in a landscape that has been witness to American Indian hunting parties, exploration by George Washington and the story of the Underground Railroad. The park features 20 miles of trails, beyond a 2,000-foot boardwalk that puts visitors in the midst of the Great Dismal Swamp. Birding and viewing abundant wildlife are favored activities. Mountain biking on the trails and kayaking the adjacent Dismal Swamp Canal are both encouraged. Visitors may bring their own equipment or rent at the park. Regular interpretive programs about the wetlands ecology and history of the famed swamp complement museum-quality exhibits in the visitor center.

Visited with wife and daughter. No entry fee. You can rent a bike or kayak for $5/hour. We toured the visitor center and hiked the trails. We saw two deer and one small green snake. Great way to spend half a day.

I visit this park several times a year. There is a nice long bicycle and walking trail paralleling US-17. The entrance area is quiet, a good place to canoe or kayak and maybe have a picnic. There are raised walkways through the swamp. The birdlife...More

Very pretty river/canal to kayak down.. there is a little noise from traffic and I would've preferred a few more places to bank to take a break but overall a very peaceful and pleasant experience. Also a special shout out to Spellman!! He was EXTREMELY...More

To get to the state park area, it looks as if you are going into a rest area. The state park signs are behind the rest area. The visitor center was good, and the boardwalk lets you see the wetlands without getting muddy. It was...More

The NC side of the swamp was a bit of a let down. We took a nice walk on the boardwalk and then the canal road. We did get to see the mist roll in on the canal, that was neat.

Not close to the park.. You will have to go into Elizabeth City. That is about 20 miles away.
