The NC side of the swamp was a bit of a let down. We took a nice walk on the boardwalk and then the canal road. We did get to see the mist roll in on the canal, that was neat.

You can rent canoes or bikes, or hike a little or a lot! Many choices to pick from! You have to cross the canal to get to the visitors center, which is very nice and packed with history. Plus, they offer wagon rides and ranger led canoe trips, check the schedule! Park itself is free!

The Great Dismal Swamp is oddly divided between being a (Federal) National Wildlife Refuge on the Virginia side and a State Park in North Carolina. This review is about the State Park in NC. As is often the case with lands being divided between different authorities, there units are treated completely separate as if the other part doesn't exist. This... More

Have been there numerous times. Great staff and interesting small educational building. A lot of hands on experiences. The rentals are cheap and the water flat and calm. Gets a little buggy in the evening, so spray up.

The Dismal Swamp State Park offers an informative visitor center, plenty of biking/walking trails. Park admission is free, attendants are friendly and knowledgeable. Bike and kayak rentals are available for a small fee. Really enjoyed this park and look forward longer bike explorations in the future.

Stopped here for an hour while driving Philly to Wilmington. What a refreshing stop.... Very pleasant gatekeeper spent a few minutes telling me about the variety of hikes; I went into the very interesting exhibit and then took the 15-minute boardwalk trail. Picnic tables and picturesque canal with kayaks to rent. Will stop longer next time with the family. What... More

Took a day trip to the park at the NC/VA state line. Thousands of miles of trails and a mini trail for the less adventurous. It is beautiful, and even though we only saw a few animals we enjoyed it

We had to drive about 30 minutes from Elizabeth City on US 17 but it was worth it. You cannot Google it and get to the State Park. We ended up at the southern edge at the end of Horseshoe Road. Wrong place. We had to stop to ask for directions. There are two visitor center and a swing bridge.... More

Love to take hikes and bike rides on the various trails. Also, love to get our kayaks out on the canal. Always a great time with my kiddos. Just be sure to use tick repellent on the wooded trails.

I frequent the biking trail. It is a nice place to ride safely with my toddler and we love looking at the nature while riding!
