Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Great place to see wildflowers. Must get out of the car, and really look closely at the ground to spot them all. Heaps of orchids in early Sep 2022. Can also see Sundews (carnivorous plant). No biting insects (unlike other wildflower 'hotspots' we went to.
Google maps gave me incorrect directions to get there. The entrance is off Coolgardie-Esperance Hwy.
I was also very confused once I entered the arboretum as to where to drive (the lady at the information centre in esperance didn't know much about the arboretum) ... but if you keep on driving along the dirt road westwards you will eventually see a picnic area where there is a signboard with a map indicating how to complete the self drive around the arboretum (please see attached photo of said signboard)

This was our second time to Esperance and the arboretum was the second thing for us to revisit when here. Unlike our last visit in September 2014 the area was still damp with hundreds of different flowers and orchids this time the area appears a lot drier but did not disappoint. Of the hundreds of photos taken we are sure there are at least 4 or 5 plants we have not come across and with 69Gb of photos of our last WA trip this is a great feeling. We were disappointed with the entrance appearance that looks unkept with trees dead and fallen. This needs to be cleaned up.

15kms out of Esperance towards the arboretum has a number of rare orchids growing in the ground in the shade of the trees. Â Get a detailed map from the Tourist Office as you definitely need to know where you are going and where the orchids are to be found. Â It is hard enough to find them even when you know where to look they are so tiny. Â You can find spider, enamel, cowslip and donkey orchids here at the right time of year.
White Bunny Orchid (late March to June and, King Spider Orchid (Sept/Oct) can also be seen. Â The Esperance Wildflower Festival is 24th - 28th September, which tells you what the best time of the year to visit Esperance is if you are interested in the flora.

Hear the wind swishing through the pine trees, stop for a picnic or go for a wander and see a variety of different plants in a condensed area. Helms Arboretum is worth a visit if you are in need of a break from the beautiful beaches or the crowds. We went mid morning on a week day and were the only ones there. There are picnic tables and a toilet however BYO toilet paper as they were out on our visit. If using google maps, be cautious that it may lead you astray and try and have you turn onto private property on Shark Lake Road, The correct entrance is in fact off the main road; Coolgardie-Esperance Highway approx 5km north of Shark Lake Road. The road is unsealed and is suitable for 2WDs, however has minor correlations which can be very bumpy if travelling too fast.

We had a lovely time here. The tracks are unsealed but friendly enough to drive on. It would be great if there was some kind of board which showed what the flowers are but still well worth visiting. We spent about 2 hours here.

This is a lovely little Arboretum well planted and laid out for easy access by car or foot from the main road. It is easy to navigate around the well maintained and marked roads. An ideal family area with plenty of parking space within the trees. Although we did not use the facilities, there appear to be pick-nick areas with benches etc. The whole area would be a very relaxing experience, although when we were there some young children were making the most of the flat earth roads with their miniature 3 wheeled motorbikes!!!!

It is about ten kilometers from Esperence on the way in from the north although it is not that well signed. it has some interesting trees and native plants and is a good place for a picnic and a stroll around.

We go to Helms several times a year. It is great to get kids out into some tall trees and they can wander quite far in safety. Has toilets and picnic table, so great to go oout there for a few hours. Always something different to see and only 10mins drive out of Esperance towards the airport.

Good question. As a visitor from the UK the issue never arose. However I suspect the answer is NO. There are all the usual picnic areas with seating and I think possibly b-b-q's along with lots of small paths with a large dirt roadway, although I believe most of the roadway is limited to working vehicles. Entry is free and as far as I am aware all of the usual WA safety restrictions apply. So sorry I am unable to be specific. There is a small animal sanctuary/zoo almost opposite the arboretum entrance, if you look this up, they may be able to help you, or may even have camping facilities on offer.
